Whilst United were not utterly convincing in their defeat of Birmingham there are a lot of positives to glean from the performance. There were many shades of last season’s impenetrable run in that we had several injuries but held firm. There was also the expected return to 4-4-2 to assess.

Little under five years ago we were chanting for this formation amd snidely mocking Queiroz for taking the flair out of our game. Now the worry is that we have returned to an archaic tactical model, the footballing equivalent of trying to rub two mobile phones together to make fire.

Valencia and Nani are both men of trickery but not necessarily by-line huggers who will put in the cross. They both played well at OT on Sunday but in this formation you need to be terrifying the full-backs you face.

In fairness, in an untried line up against a bunch of seasoned pros under the charge of a crunching Scotsman the kids did more than alright.

Evra was sensational. He is still our doodle-bug and tore forward like a man possessed, all this talk of Rooney being on the left wing last season and it may be that he was holding the Frenchman back all along.

This, of course, is fine. Rooney looks pretty happy playing through he middle and I suspect goalies don’t like it too much when he shoots the ball at them. He will be doing it a lot more this season I am afraid my glove-wearing friends.

ON the evidence of this game we can draw two solid conclusions. Those who predicted Birmingham to go down were speaking too soon and United are going to have to play considerably better against Arsenal. As usual Wenger’s men have been underestimated, and they are the first big team we face.

more grace to man utd young star but they should try and work hard as a team and sir alex ferguson should note that any one who did not click in any game should be pull out in any game and look for a replacement imediately for better result

A new season underway and a lot of positives to be taken from that performance. I believe the boys are showing some balance and maturity previously lacking when we had our golden boy. Good start and hope it gets better from here.
p.s. more of the same to the merseyside! lol

I'm a Man Utd Fan and I think we should go in for Aaron Lennon. He is a good winger and very skillful.

"any one who did not click in any game should be pull out in any game and look for a replacement imediately for better result" -michael o ibizugbe

I'd beg to differ on this opinion. Sometimes, we should allow some players the chance to pick up despite their mistakes. I'm glad Fergie decided to stick to Foster despite his cluelessness at Wembley the week before. And we'd now have him to thank for preserving our slender lead.

Finding an immediate replacement for people who don't perform is so.... Man City...

But of course, if players continue to display a lack of teamwork and show no signs of maturity as they progress in their careers, then they should be given the RvN treatment :P

i think wayne rooney is very teriffic, his kind of play is so interesting and if he doesn't get injured, united will have to defend its premier league trophy.the team is so good than before.

The team is fantastic, we can't expect the likes of nani and valencia a new signingto perfectly fit into Ronaldo's shoes by their first game. the team is full of potentials and that should gladden us all

I like to see Fergie give more chance to young talented player like Ben Foster and Fabio, I do believe the combination young talented and experience skilled player will make them alright :)
Whre is Macheda? give him more time to play as well! he is very strong young and good skill striker!

I like MU. I will be MU's man forever

United for Life!!! I strongly believe in the ability of SAF and Macheda but the latter was no where to be found on Saturday.....I think Macheda is the best player to fit into our erstwhile Golden Boy CR7... He's got the ability, speed and skill. CR7 started off just like that...I stand to be corrected.
I love him so much!

its a good improvement to last seasons first game and hopefully united would be able give a good performance all season long... the 4-4-2 formation is compact and i must say rigid but the positives it brings to the team a good defenseive cover and if the attacking prowress of Rooney Berbatov Nani and Valencia are anything to go by then the world should be scared of the return of United to the top of world club football

I have been troubled wondering who was going to take the penalties,Chelsea have Lampard Liverpool Gerard and we had Ronaldo. Penalties are all about confidence, why not Rooney he has a jackhammer shot and I think it will make him a better player.

i am man u fan and i think we are going to difend the league this year man u all the best.
and also i hope the adsent of ronaldo will not do any harm to the team.

If SAF thought he could refrain from spending, maybe the Burnley shambles will convince him otherwise. We should offload the players who underperformed against Burnley (& Barca), namely,
Carrick (ineffective), Park (too slow) ,& Anderson, -who I hoped would be another "Edgar Davids" for us, but seems to be regressing!
I dread to think what would happen if Rooney got a lengthy injury. We need 2 top quality players,(not too young or old) NOW!!

it's ok if man utd not winning any title this season. it takes a lot of hard works to change tactic and understanding after 6years with CR7. the latest is losing to burnley...carrick cant score from penalty spot...poor united. wake all players..this is theatre of dreams...if u dont have any dream pack ur luggage and move ur ass off

This is the Alex Ferguson model for success:

1) Find a talented youngster

2) Groom him to be the best in what he does

3) Benefit from his services for a good 5 - 6 seasons

4) Sell him to Real Madrid, for a huge profit

5) Rinse and repeat

Currently, with Macheda, we're now at stage 2. I can't wait to see how he turns out, and then how much Real Madrid will cough up for him.

That's the best aswner of all time! JMHO
