With all due respect to the great man we can ignore Alex Ferguson’s statement that ‘tranfer business is done’ at Old Trafford for the summer. Within five days of that announcement we had purchased Mame Biram Diouf from Molde and you can expect a few more below-the-radar acquisitions before the transfer window slams shut.

This has become a bit of a trick of Fergie’s over the last few years, to say we are not going to be buying anyone else, and then buying someone else. It is a nice idea though, certainly nobody saw the transfers of Nani or Anderson coming.

Our rivals, on the other hand, are conducting business with all the subtlety of a herd of buffalo in a small family-run china shop. I don’t, in all honesty, expect any gigantic signings to arrive at OT in the next month, but this is as good a time as any to run the rule over our rival’s squads:

Chelsea:

Ancelotti has won all of the big trophies with Milan but has performed poorly in the league. He freely admits that his job brief is to get the team to the pinnacle of Europe so you can expect that to be their priority again this year.

Chelsea are creaking though, they are still basically operating as the side Mourinho put together a few years ago and they ain’t getting any younger. If you ask me, their major problem is still the player power in the dressing room. Their smartest move would be to get rid of John Terry , crush the ego culture, and start building a team ethic. Won’t happen though. They will still be strong and determined, and will no doubt completely lack class when things go against them.

Threat: Pretty strong, if Ancelotti can get them churning out results they will finish in the top two again.

Liverpool:

Liverpool were mighty close to the summit last year but I have the feeling it was sheer force of will that got them so close. Their squad is nowhere near as strong as United’s and that will count against them over the course of a gruelling 38 game season. Certainly though, their starting eleven is as good as any in world football. They are capable of winning any of the major showdown games, provided Gerrard and Torress are fit, to keep things interesting. They are also bloody determined to win the league again.

Much will depend on whether or Xabi Alonso moves to Real Madrid, he is a key part of their midfield and there will be no Gareth Barry in white shining armour coming to the rescue now. Benitez is getting better at managing in this league every year and, should he finally start getting his team selections consistently right, Liverpool could be a big problem.

Threat: Major, will be spurred on by last year’s near miss and even more determined than usual.

I agree whole-heartedly with this post and loved the bull in the china shop line, classic. Liverpool, in my eyes, is a two trick pony: pretty boy Fernando and iron man Stevie G. Take those two out of the equation on any day of the weak and the Scouse will crumble no matter how hard Kuyt works on the flanks or how many toe pokes Babel attempts (then misses). Keep writing; it's the only Man Utd writing I can stand.

i think united are in a good form this time with the incoulsion of the new signings, which is great things to them. No matter losing ronado to remardri.

Posted by HC Lam on 07/20/2009

As usual an insighful article. As I write this I am waiting anxiously for the match between MU and the Malaysian XI. I am hoping Owen is given a chance to play upfront with Rooney this time round. That would be mouth-watering to say the least, but more so to see how they will benefit from each other.

And I agree that our squad this season is not complete as yet. There will still be one or two surprises before the transfer deadline, albeit smaller ones.

Disgusting! What a blow to Tevez if indeed John Terry were to join Manchester City and worse, if he wore the captain's armband. If Tevez is still unaware that it was JT who spat on him during the 2007 Champions League Final at Moscow, then he is a bigger dud than I thought he was. Good riddance to bad rubbish Tevez. You were offered diamonds but you chose glass instead. Super duper fool - that's what you were, still are and always will be!!!! Starting with having an agent owning you. HAH!!! LOL!!!!

Posted by Joseph on 07/20/2009

In fairness, Diouf was signed because an uptick in interest in him forced Utd's hand. He also won't be joining the club until January (if he can obtain a work permit) & he's a young lad who many don't think is ready for football at the level of the EPL. So I don't think that classifies as another signing under the criteria given by Fergie.

Also, Nani and Anderson were signed at the beginning of the transfer window 2 years ago - so I also don't see how that fits into "we're not buying someone else, then buying someone else." line.

Utd definitely need central midfield help though - with Giggs and Scholes in their last days, the uncertainty over Hargreaves and the way we were shown up by Barca - I think this is and has been their biggest area of concern. Replacing Ronaldo will have to be a community effort, because there are no other players like Ronaldo in the world to be brought in. Replacing Tevez will be an easier task - as he was about tenacity moreso than goalscoring & creativity.

Posted by ammarkus on 07/21/2009

i agree with joseph.we do need central midfield who can open up the play.carrick was good but he was not consistent enough. i hope we can give more chances for gibson to shine as i see he has the ability and vision to pass the ball forward. scholes can help him develope. owen was a good purchase n i believe with one more signing in midfield will surely see us becoming champion again..

Posted by sijo john on 07/21/2009

United have got so much money by selling ronaldo. They have to use it wisely and find a replacement for him before the season starts.I also think that gabriel obertan is a good choice.Good luck fergie for the next season!!!!!!!

Posted by LE ACE on 07/21/2009

Considering that Tevez was mainly a sub I think the only real loss was Ronaldo. Therefore Man U is pretty much intact....not to mention the new signings!LIVERPOOL,CHELSEA AND THEIR ILK,BE AFRAID...BE VERY AFRAID AS MAN U ARE ARE DESTINED TO BE CHAMPIONS AGAIN.

Nice one by fergie to have brougth in micheal owen, i believe in macheda though but above them all is my favourite ANDERSON. The midfield still needs creativity:one with vision and great passing ability like the iniesta's, xavi's, i believe we can get a micheal essien to stand in for Owen Hargreaves

Posted by Eugene on 07/21/2009

Nice one fergie to have brougth in Micheal Owen, i believe in Macheda though but always is my believe high for ANDERSON(my favourite). Where i see the problem is in the midfield, we need the likes of iniesta and xavi with great vision and creative ability. I believe we can get Micheal Essien to stand in for the "In and Out" Micheal Hargreaves.********Great United********

well written post. i hear people compare man-u to the n.y. yankees, a.k.a. "the evil empire", specifically where finances are concerned and players they have dumped tons of money into in hopes of winning, or should i say "buying" a championship (i.e. real, or perhaps man-city). sir alex's keen eye for not only talent, but a bargain set him apart from his contemporaries resulting in sustained superior performance over the years (the yankees last won a championship in 2000). it was time for ronaldo to go and the club is better off without him, where the pocket book and dressing room is concerned; however, someone needs to fill the massive gap he leaves in attack; the ego void is fine. ribery would have helped immensly; hard working, creative, quick, AND gets back on defense. to be fair, bayern would be crazy to get rid of him. i see a dark horse in owen and a perfect chance to silence his critics with the world cup looming on the horizon. what rabbit is sir alex gonna pull outta his hat?

Posted by David on 07/21/2009

Man U's problem is with the midfield, and no matter how many strikers are added to the squad, lack of quality in the midfield will undermine the teams striking abilities. Giggs and Scholes are not "in their last days," their days are OVER. If Man U does not add to the midfield, then let us start bracing ourselves for ending the season without a trophy. If we do not learn from the 2008/9 CL final defeat, then we are going to be fools for ever. Let Fergie strengthen the midfield with pace and talent, Carrick is not up to the job and Hargreaves will not play this season. Fletcher will not be the knight in shining amour. Fergie, strengthen the midfield or risk losing the title.

Posted by Ram on 07/21/2009

I think that the midfield should be sufficiently strenthened to create openings for owen and kiko. The absence of Ronanldo's penetrating pace will be graetly compensated by intelligent midfield player like Scholesy..so Fergie should only think about this area for creative players.

Posted by Samuel Newman on 07/22/2009

Looks like Liverpool will lose Alonso so they will be down this year; Arsenal lost Adebeyor and with him some attacking depth; if Chelsea lose Terry and Carvallo, they'll be weaker too. City will be improved but not experienced enough as a team yet. The EPL will be more competitive this year with 5 teams in it till the end but United's overall strength and depth will see them thru. I agree another central midfielder would be a bonus and Barca showed us how critical that is, but I also think Fletcher will build off his fine form last season and become the anchor of this team. We certainly have others in midfield to support him and Anderson needs to step up and confirm his starting spot this year. As someone else said, Owen will replace Tevez and I believe will score more goals before Xmas than Tevez did all season. Rooney will feature and score even more and if Berba doesn't prove himself, I think Rooney, Owen and Macheda can replace the goals Ronaldo scored. United again this year!

Posted by Kelvin Poh on 07/22/2009

Utd will be weaker in terms of team sheets this year.....but hopefully without CR7..there will be better team spirit..more all around hustle effort and less selfish play.

More satisfying for the true fan..even if we are arguably weaker.

Posted by SSESSANGA HUSSEIGN on 07/22/2009

In Nani,Anderson,Macheda,Rooney and the young serb winger, United are a serious threat. The only improvement sir Alex has to do is to sign a creative midfielder with skills close to if not like scholes if he is to avoid another barcelona embarrasment. And A defencive midfielder is also neccessary one just cant depend on none tackling players like fletcher and oshea. My view is that its only fergie who gets to do the things a club like united does with just average
players.Transfer the same squad to benitez and see desaster.WITH OR WITHOUT RONALDO UNITED'S PEDEGREE WILL LIFT THEM BACK TO THE TOP.

Posted by simon li on 07/22/2009

Man Utd were plain lucky last season. More than a dozen 1-0, lots of huff and puff and a decidedly poor goals-for tally. The confirmation is the footballing lesson from Barca in the CL final, whereas Chelsea had more than neutralised Barca's fire-power.

Yes, the midfield. Anderson is no Xavi or Iniesta, no Lampard or Gerard and doesn't know where the goal is. Nani is so so after a bright start, Carrick needs a Keane for partner, Fletcher is good enough against anyone save for the likes of Barca, Gibson is finding his feet, Hargreaves is not on this planet, Giggs won't be playing more than 30 games and Scholes can't tell apart ball and legs.

So? It'll be huff and puff again and 4-0 vs real madrid remains a dream. Hope I'm wrong.

Posted by Shimo on 07/22/2009

The Nani/Anderson comments I take it as relating in how United do business. No one really saw it coming, suddenly we were announcing their signings. The speculation about who we are going to sign or who we are after is rife but, overall no one really knows who we are after. Even Benzema - that was something that was looked at a lot earlier than when all the speculation during the transfer window opening.

Everyone brings up how we were outplayed in the center in the Cup final. Iniesta/Xavi were the best on the planet in that part of the park last year, even on the international stage. Even the power of Essien couldn't contain them. So lets not get carried away with the mediocrity of our midfield. Our midfield is very very good for the most part.

Other than Essien, which will never happen, I don't see another midfielder out there for United.

Daniele de Rossi

Posted by RS on 07/23/2009

Liverpool could have won the league title last season if they had not been inconsistent. They had too many draws with teams they should have won. Secondly, Torres fitness was the factor. Then, all other big teams (Chelsea, United & City) rebuild themselves quite remarkably for the new season, but the Reds aren't, with the exception of Johnson. If they lose Alonso and Macherano to some Spanish giants, then they might as well work hard just to be in the top 4 next season. To be the league champion? I don't think so. They will need a few more good signings and wait another year to be consistent. They waited too long (and stingy) to grab Barry and Teves. Lastly, they need another really good striker to take the role of Torres if he gets injured. My prediction is, MU and Chelsea will fight for the top spot and Liverpool, Arsenal and City will fight for the remaining 2 Euro spots.

Posted by Don on 07/23/2009

SELL: Nani

BUY: Satisfied with the signings so far. Though Ronaldo will always be loved by us, we dont need another one like him in the team. What we need are players like rooney, park, scholes who just get on with the game for the club and not for themselves.

Current Team: GET NANI OUT!!!!!

Future: Like to see more of da Silva Twins in action. They remind me of the Nevilles in their younger days and they play better. Possebon (after loan period) and Gibson to feature more. Macheda is good, prefer him to turn out like rooney instead of ronaldo though got to admit that he does have shades of a younger ronaldo in action.

Final Verdict: GET NANI OUT!!!!!!!

one more striker will do

Posted by jetset on 07/24/2009

Man U need just one player to ensure a 4th consecutive Premier League title and another Champions League title. That player is:

Chriss Angel (look it up)

Posted by ANDREW K LUBASI on 07/24/2009

IF ONLY ESSIEN COULD BE SIGNED FOR MAN U THE BETTER.HE IS AN ALL ROUNDER AS SEEN BY ALL.THE ONLY NUMBER HE CAN NOT PLAY IS IN THE GOAL AS A KEEPER.WORST NO TIME ON HIM PLEASE,PLEASE CONCERNED MAN U SUPPORTER

Posted by gptan on 07/24/2009

Fergi, should get a creative midfielder and this will settle the issue. CR7 , is replaceable by both wingers.Creative midfielder someone like Gerrad or Lampard style of play.

Hi, I have been a MU fan since the early 80s' and I am grateful of what Sir Alex and his players have achieved so far. We may never be able to replace great players like the inspirational Robson, the talismanic Cantona, the famous goals poaching Van Niesterooy, the wonder twins power of Andy Cole & Dwight Yorke, freekick specialist Beckham and stepover expert Ronaldo, but all is not lost. The will & hunger for bigger honours are the reasons why MU is superior. Don't waste too much money on big name players because just because it's MU, players are been sold to at exorbitant prices. The skills of the current squad are unquestionable, consistent teamwork and cohesion are things which aren't easy to forge and maintain. In MU, it has shown in recent times, it is probably something vital, essential and worth working at. Cheers, the Red Devils....for your Never say Die attitude!

reading about united signing midfielders
they should be worrying who is going to follow in
van-da-saar's place, he has been the mainstay
cant wait for the season to start
even if i miss my sleep n.z.

Posted by Golden on 07/25/2009

I do agree with gptan, really it is in midfield where we need to fortify.I would not want to think how much we were exposed in that dpt by Barca. Also if Sir could play Roo as our central striker.

Posted by esi mozzi on 07/25/2009

i think we need one or two central midfilder, creative midfilder like inesta,we have a enough money to buy a 1 or 2 super star like Iniesta or xavi or aguero who play like messi...
i think we can champion again...if we spend well
United 4 ever

Posted by Jakpo Ukueku on 07/25/2009

I think we probably make at least one more signing, it would in the midfield to sure things up although the present squad is capable of major upsets thi s comong season, i have faith in Sir Alex and his boys i cant wait for this season to start.

Posted by almasy musa on 07/26/2009

first i wud like to congrats fergie and the boys second midfld is alwys a disease to united has no cure to tht but the absence of CR7 is the huge big thirst of more trophies to bring in by the perfomce of fergies boys and those are anderson,Nani, gibson, owen rooney and all others but also we can bring a match to carrick and fletcher like daniele de rossi,i blieve valencia wil stand up fans more like CR7 is the best player for nw
I BELIEVE MAN U WE OL BLV IN RED DEVILS NEXT SEASON IS OURS MAN U HUREEEEEEEEEEEE
SUCK MAN CTY you will never clinch the success we have nor being in top four (6) is your pos nxt season

maybe more Brazilian lad such Dos Santos.. and so on.. train more youngster to be stars like Ronaldo.. we will miss him a lot...=p
peace...

Win Lose or Draw, Manu is my Team. I do agree with most of the comments so far especially the ones concerning the need to get a creative midfielder; we need one badly. We also need a goalkeeper; i dont like Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak aint no Van Der Sar. I dont think either of those keepers command their defence good enough to be worthy replacements. They do no have the luxury of time, they need to perform now or leave. CR7 was good...RIP but its time to move beyond him and build a TEAM and not just a player. my 0.02 cents

Posted by albert randle on 07/27/2009

I ONLY WANT SIR ALEX TO SIGN THE YOUNG BRAZILIAN I.E DOUGLAS COSTA.HE HAS THE POTENTIAL OF WAERING NO7 FOR US IN THE FUTURE.HE HAS A GREAT TALENT.I LOVE HIM TO BE A PLAYER IN MANU.

Posted by VeryRed on 07/27/2009

I say it again...

Daniele de Rossi, Lassana Diarra... one or the other MUST BE SIGNED, except someone knows something I dont about Hargo's fitness. we cant keep playing Mrs. Carrick in front of the back four...

Posted by Harp on 07/27/2009

Its all about TEAM. Despite Scholsie and Giggsy, most of the side are quite young. That said, the industry of Fletcher, Park, Anderson, Hargreaves (If he can return to his old self, remember how happy we were when we bagged him?) will allow Rooney to focus on striking and be a power. I agree, GET RID OF NANI. Good skill but not a Utd teammate. We are still monsters in the back with the Desilvas added to the bunch. Owen has something to prove and we could get 15 goals from him. That sucking sound you hear is coming from the Kop. Chelski will implode as usual. Except for Essien, they are a bunch of classless egoboys. Any injuries at all,(and there are ALWAYS injuries) and Liverpool will hemmorage points and who's not looking forward to the Gooners finishing below Spurs in 6th or 7th?
Four on the Trot is gonna happen!

Posted by pete kelbrick on 07/28/2009

sign jenas 7m, ashley young 20m, huntlear 15m, try snap sneider united wont sit on there wallet neva hapen! vds raphael, rio, vidic, evra valencia, carrick, anderson, nani rooney berbatov not abad team anyway

Posted by Brian Allan on 07/28/2009

As a staunch Man U fan living abroad I love all these varied comments and I believe the only unfair comment is suggesting Giggs and Scholes are OVER :-( Hardly... Remember Sherington? Giggs scored a hat-trick a couple of days ago... before you say it was inferior opposition in Asia I still didn't see the younger Rooney scoring a hat-trick... Pause for thought. Yes our midfield needs a playmaker however Sir Alex is aware of that and will surely have a plan up his sleeve... he doesn't make many mistakes and admits the ones he does... :-)

Posted by Frank on 08/01/2009

I think what we need is a tough-tackling yet creative DMFer that can win balls and initiate attacks. We all know scholsey can't tackle a sick hen, anderson plays well on very few occassions and carrick isn't the best marker of the ball in the wrld thats why we always struggle to gain possession against teams like barca. I think signing Yaya toure won't do the team any harm.

Posted by Chris on 08/04/2009

Come on david silva come to Man Utd!!!!!!

Posted by Rio George Mwangi on 09/03/2009

with the transfer window officially over, yet no major signings at the theater of dreams many fans cant help but question the resolve of the lord of old traford. NOT ME. I know for a fact that united have done all the buying and SELLING that was necessary. FACTS: Owen was/is/will be the best striker the premier league has ever produced. in Manchester he's found a home. Obertan has a part to play in the fourth consecutive Epl success. Zoran Tosic & Adem Llagic provide the much needed depth and surprise element to our squad. NOT to mention "Pain Wayne" will get a more central stiker's role. C'MON UNITED let's go for a new winning streak.....(MWANGY)
