I really admire diplomatic people. They have a skill which I lack, the ability to bring a clear head and the cool light of day to even the most frenzied of situations. Some subjects just divide opinion, there are topics that will have people gesticulating wildly, spittle jumping off their lips as they try and control their anger. Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have this type of effect on people.
There are voices saying ‘good riddance’, there is a chorus of relief even in some red circles, but just as pertinently there are a proportion of us who think ‘how the hell are we going to replace this guy?’ Quite simply, we cannot.
Ronaldo’s football has been from another planet for at least two seasons now and it has been a joy to behold. Tickets at Old Trafford now make a weekend in Vegas look cheap yet every single time Ronaldo played he did something to make the cost of that ticket worthwhile. Ridiculous things, be it a 40yard screamer or backheeling the ball when he was lying down. He is a truly sensational player. But he had to go.
Ronaldo, although a worthy occupant of the No.7 shirt worn with distinction by Cantona, Best and Robson was not United. His play was but, and this never sat well with me, he dived. A LOT.
Fergie has chats with players who do this and tells them to take it out of their game. Ronaldo didn’t. He was tolerated because of his space-age ball skills but the time had come.
We will read a million lines of copy over the summer now on the subject of who will replace him. Personally, I hope it is a player from the youth team.
There is no doubt that we, as a team, will be weaker without Cristiano Ronaldo but the ethos of Manchester United is now stronger than ever. No one player is bigger than the club, and certainly not one who dives. I take this opportunity to thank Mr. Ronaldo for the excellent football he has played for our club. But eighty million pounds? Thank you very much indeed.

I was with you until your youth team comment. There is no way a player from the youth team can replace Ronaldo. We haven't another winger to compare with him in our EPL squad. If we don't go out and buy some more players, which we needed to improve the squad anyway, then we'll struggle next season.

Yeah !!! thank you very much CR7.. no worry his gone, Fergie will make another no.7 legend which he always did. Actually, Manutd didn't need CR7 but CR7 needs Fergie. Without Sir Alex Ferguson he will be living in the shadow of Kaka, without Fergie, he won;t be the top of the world. you can look his performance in Portugai International, he's not worth 80m pound. i also thank you for Real Mardid had made the most stupid deal ever : P

Cristiano Ronaldo's departure has given Wayne Rooney the ability to perform and now places him in the spotlight. He will perform out of his mind. Rooney was overshadowed by Ronaldo but is still one of the best players in the world. His contribution to the national team offer a glimpse of what next season will be like up front at the striker position. I wish Cristiano well, but I know others, including Rooney, will step up and take control from the beginning.

Ronaldo is undoubtedly a prestigious talent and his skills will be lost. His actions - such as the deliberate dithering over his future, the diving, pouting like a child when he didn't get his way and more recently slapping away a towel from a member of the coaching staff after being substituted - were nothing short of embarrassing for the club and all the fans who are left to defend him.
Whilst we will miss his talents, we will be better off in the long run without him.
We tolerated him for his genius but he was not infallible - his failure to track back after loosing possession often left us exposed on the counter attack, also whilst his free kicks were spectacular this season he missed far more than he scored.
I wish him luck at Madrid and thank him for his service. Now it is time for Man Utd to do what they do best - move on to better things with a new number 7 in tow.

When Becks left united, we all wondered how he would be replaced. Cristiano is a great player, probably the best at the moment. But he will be replaced and forgotten soon enough... The club is always bigger than the player.

Yes...good bye and good riddance to a petulant child. The team will continue to do well without him. You can buy a lot of talent with 80 million pounds. One player does not make the team...and if he does, your team has real problems.

When the news came out, I was frozed to death, imagine a line-up without Cristiano! But then again, hey it's a guy who was forcing himself to play in a team which he seem to have lost interest in. Especially after the final of last year Euopean League , after the penalty safe from edvin, he was the only player who didn't run up to his team mates, but rather went on joyful emotion to himself. Every style of his footbal was more evident this season with his solo counters and tries. He wanted to prove himself to others, not to win it as a team. And please, i do appreciate every contribution of his but then again, What makes Man Utd as the Great Club is the players who devote to the victory of the team , we see it in the likes of rooney, giggs, and even ferdinand for that matter.....so in long run, MAN UTD will change to become a stronger and vigilant team without him , and thats for sure because we have the best talent in history to prove it to the world,= Sir Alex Ferguson!

Mark,
Another thoughtful piece. I agree that we can't 'replace' Ronaldo. I would also argue that we could never 'replace' Rooney, Rio, Vidic, Carlos etc. Does that necessarily make us weaker than we would be with him? Does Ronny's absence now provide a greater opportunity for Wazza, Berbatov, Anderson etc to show what they are capable of doing without him? I honestly believe that the underlying potential of the rest of the squad can more than cover Ronny's departure. Some of our most entertaining games last season were in the League Cup when we played the 'fringe' players.
I agree with you that it's time to revisit our youth players and give some of them a chance in the red shirt rather than some obscure teams in Belgium and other smaller European countries.
The future is very bright and I am sure there will be some shrewd, obscure purchases made in the coming weeks and months. Did any of us expect what we got when one C.Ronaldo was purchased 6 years ago?

There is no denying the fact that Ronaldo is a great player with superb speed, better than Kaka and even Messi. But he is not our greatest player. George Best, Cantona,Charlton, Solksjaer, Giggs, Rooney, Gary Neville, Robson, Beckham, Scholes, Hughes, Ferdinand, Tevez and many others are genuine Man United players at heart. But I never held Ronolado in high esteem for reasons esplicitly described by PaulJB whom I thank wholeheatedly to have expressed openly what I felt deep inside for long. I quote:
"Ronaldo is undoubtedly a prestigious talent and his skills will be lost. His actions - such as the deliberate dithering over his future, the diving, pouting like a child when he didn't get his way and more recently slapping away a towel from a member of the coaching staff after being substituted - were nothing short of embarrassing for the club and all the fans who are left to defend him."
Bravo PaulJB, I feel relieved after reading your pertinent comments on the most egoistic player.

The Talent CR possesses is undeniable, he was great for Man U. I am grateful to have had him in our team. I thank and wish him well.
While there will never be another CR as there will never be another Becks or King Eric, History suggests other stars will arise to shine at OT. Rubbishing a player because he is leaving is not only unfair but also immature.
We have many talented world class players, some will come forth and shine. Just as it took 2-3 years for CR to reach dizzy heights others will follow. In the end the player gets his dream move and the club that natured him, is well compensated. I think it is a good way to end things. We now need to finalise on the Tevez issue, sign him up or let him go, so we can move on!
I think if CT moves then we need another proven striker for cover, maybe Karim Benzema with Wazza on gun. However i believe instead of concentrating on forwards only we need a proven holding midfielder with Scholsey on the verge of hanging his boots.

I have been watching MAN U since 13 years. Good players come and go Cole, Yorke, Nistelrooy, Becham, etc... and now Ronaldo. Man U will always be a good team and will still be with or without CR7. They have proven they have capabilities to play without Ronaldo and even some of the games they managed to play better. We had better get rid of Ronaldo because of his self interest and Man U does not need the type of player who thinks only about his own fame. This is unfortunate because we are losing a special player but letting him go, in my opinion is the right choice. We are still going to win the EPL 2009-2010. We will have another shot on the CL. Hope we can meet RM and trash them to show CR7 what he exchange for the money!!!
Glory Man U!
To all Man U fan. Please keep the faith.
Wish you all a wonderful summer break.

I honestly do not understand why everyone is hyped up about who will replace CR.
There is no need to find a duplicate. Every player who has pulled on the 7 jersey was special in his own way. Yet when they left, someone eventually stepped in, albeit in style of his own.
Cantona was not Best, an certainly, Ronaldo was not Cantona.
Best could never be replaced, neither could Cantona.
You cannot replace genius. But, genius has many definitions.
I am sure that someone will step up, under the magnificent guidance of SAF, and fill the void with style all his own.

yes, CR did save our skins on a number of occasions these last two seasons, yes, he had a big hand in getting us to the ECL final and yes, he did sell us a lot of shirts and brought in a number of new fans. he has served the club well over the 6 years he was with Man United...
if the boy wants to move on and persue his childhood dream of playing for real madrid, let him. wish him all the best, hope he finally achieves what he wants to with real madrid. good for him..but
he is not cantona, charlton, edwards, giggs to name a few, his legacy will never endure the test of time as the true united legends. he might have won silverware in his time but a legend he will never be. united will replace him and he will be a distant memory and nothing more. no one is bigger then the club.. Lets put our faith in SAF and move on..

6 years ago, Beckham leave us and Fergie gave a virtually unknown 18 years old Portugese player the famous number 7 shirt of United. there were debates over the selection, and today when we look back, how funny those debates are?
Ronaldo deserved to be remembered as one of the famous No 7 player of United, but who said we cant get someone from the youth to be our next No 7?
My heart of to bring back Rossi (he's from our youth & reserve team alright) and reward him with the no. 7 shirt. He's not a winger as Best or Beckham or Ronaldo, but any restriction that a striker cant be no 7? Cantona was not an out & out striker, but he was the no 7 as well... with a buy back clause when he was sold to villareal, i believe that Rossi won't be costing more than 15million pound, which looks like a bargain considering the current expenses in the football market (Glen Johnson cost Liverpool a clean 17 million, well that's the bargain)

Buying ronaldo was a masterful move by madrid. Lets face it, hes NOT a phenomenal player. He's a phenomenon yes, but technically he does ok for man u, but terrible for portugal. Compared to Kaka who performs well for club and country. Man U has a great squad and CR7 looks good b/c of it. At real, they can even choose to rest their 80 million acquisition and never play him. Strategically, this will have the effect of reducing Man U's strength (a major competitor in the champs league) while real can still play kaka, Benzema, Sneijder (if he doesnt leave), and others. In the meantime, ronaldo can sell shirts, stadium seats, and commercials. Its a move that's been done to death before (Beckham to real, ronaldo/rivaldo/ronaldhino to milan). These transition moves only serve to close out the player--how many times did huntelaar play for madrid since his transfer? Its a world cup year, and i think ronaldo will only be a commercial product from here on out.

Alex must sign a few more players like Douglas Costa and Yaya Toure, David Silva and so we can look foward to the title, we've also got Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia too.
 |
Posted by Chris on 08/02/2009
These are the players Alex must sign quick before the transfer window finishes and the players they must get rid of !!!!!
In Out
Owen (signed) Ronaldo (left)
Pogba (signed) L Martin (left)
Orberton (signed) Erkesley (left)
Valencia (signed) Tevez (left)
Yaya Toure (30ml) Fletcher (2 YR loan)
David Silva (25ml) Park Ji Sung (loan)
David Villa (30ml Manucho (to Hull)
That's the players Alex must sign, never sign Benzema or shevchenko go for David Villa he's the best and we will rule and the treble just like what we did in 1999. The best team will be like this
Van der sar, Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Yaya Toure, Silva, Rooney, Villa, Owen.
Where the boys in red and well beat Chelsea at wembly and win the comunity sheild, and the league, FA Cup, Champions league, Carling Cup and everything and lets forget about Ronaldo, even alex retires go for Mourinho or Pep Guardiola.

the departure of CR7 has made me 2 to know that anderson is also a freekick specialist.he proved it in our match angainst boca juniour in audi cup.so i believe that a lot of players are still going to discover the talent God giving them.
i wish him the best of stay in real madrid.
