The transfer tittle-tattle basically bores me to tears. I much prefer to see players coming through the ranks than a new John Wayne walk into the dressing room any day of the week. I will post a review of our transfer targets in the next week but beforehand I think it is important to assess the strengths and weaknesses the squad has shown up over the last year. Here goes:
Van Der Sar:
Started extremely wobbly and the general feeling at the start of the year was that he would gradually be phased out during the season. Horrifically at fault for the first goal at Anfield but showed the resolve of a great to come back and claim the clean sheet record. Can he repeat the feats next season? I doubt it, but suspect he will be asked to do so.
Foster:
One of the most talented goalies I have seen. Still very young but handled the Mickey Mouse Cup final responsibility like a champ. This could be the season when we ask ask him to step up to the plate. Only time will tell if he is ready, it would be a gamble though.
G. Nev:
The heart of the club and still our best spokesman off the pitch. He is not the man he was before his injury though. His determination and hard work will mean he stays in contention next season, but zippy forwards for our opponents look forward to playing against him now.
Vidic:
Awesome all year but I am a little worried about the trumpet blowing. His partnership with Rio is the most important thing in the team but pride tends to precede something doesn’t it? Don’t mention Fernando Torres.
Rio:
Pure class and should definitely be the next captain. I can’t remember him doing anything major wrong all season. Almost immaculate.
Evra:
Probably his best season for us but having Rooney in front of him is a definite bonus. If he played with a winger who didn’t track back as much he could find himself in more trouble.
Rafael:
Welcome to Manchester United. Corking goal in his debut and a major talent but needs a couple more years experience to sort out his positional play.
Evans:
I wasn’t sure about him at first but he played a significant role in the clean-sheet record and deserves credit for that. A solid deputy and it is comforting to know he is there, probably not good enough to dislodge either Rio or Vidic though.
Wes:
Injured too much to really register but is class when he plays. Is there a connection between his lengthy recovery times and the rumours I hear about his fondness for a night on the tiles?
Park Ji Sung:
The man with 3 lungs and our best current chant harried every opponent he faced. It must be bloody annoying trying compete against him. Got lost in the European Cup Final and doesn’t play the decisive ball anywhere near as often as he should. Still a favourite though.
Fletcher:
Is emerging as the man of the team. The shadows of Robson and Keane hang over him but he always justifies his selection. Would like to see him become a bit more of a destroyer next year.
Ronaldo:
Spent a lot of time on the field looking like he didn’t give a damn but was still streets ahead of the rest. Likely to be the best player we have had since George but his attitude had effected his displays. I think his influence on the dressing room was having an effect on the other players and we will start seeing improvement in the performance of others now he is gone.
Rooney:
Nobody seems to mention how much has matured as a man. In interviews now his head is much more screwed on. He is doing the job of about three players on the pitch at the moment and all the hard work he does for others stops him from shining as much. Definitely my favourite current player and I hope he is played in the centre next season.
Giggs:
Another good season for Ryan, he is smart enough never to look exposed now but the pace is basically gone. Probably just cameos next year.
Scholes:
Fading. I am sorry to say it but he doesn’t have ninety minutes in him anymore. Still the best passer at the club and hope to see him come on and change a few games next year.
Carrick:
Not as invisible as before and he was excellent against Inter. He doesn’t have enough presence on the field though and needs to sort out his haircut. Other than that, much improved and can hopefully get better again.
Nancy:
Was that second season syndrome? Needs to seriously pull his socks up.
Anderson:
A major talent but didn’t really produce this year. I still have high hopes for him but suspect that Ronaldo’s attitude was a bad influence on him.
Tevez:
Pivotally brilliant against Wigan and City but it just makes me think what was he up to the rest of the season. Almost as good as he thinks he is. A shame to see him go but I think having Kia Joorboachim in one ear and Cristiano Ronaldo in the other ear has stopped him thinking straight. Wish he was staying but he ain't.
Berbatov:
There is more to come from this guy, much more. He does appear too languid still but boy can he control a football. I expect to see big improvements from him next year.
Wellbeck:
Scored probably the finest debut goal in history against Stoke. Will improve but a boy amongst men at the moment.
Macheda:
Basically won the league for us. I will just wait and see what happens next.
The Manager:
It is ridiculous that he is still going. Balanced the squad and team selections brilliantly all year and very nearly pulled off the quintuple. I don’t know how he continues to do it but I am bloody grateful that he does.

Just another note..have you ever noticed the strikers that Sir Alex sold seems to be scoring well? Forlan, Rossi...As for Berbatov, I think it is a poor buy.

definitely agree with the negative effect playing with CR could have had this year. Although I thought Tevez suffered also and would welcome a chance to play without him

i agree that nani needs to step his game up. rooney has been my favorite for a few years now. and to see him maturing the way he is is heartwarming. hopefully ando can sort out his scoring touch in addition to those defense splitting passes he is so good with. scholesy is fading fast. we need hargo back too i reckon.

I think it is a great success last season.I want to congratulate the team.Rooney honestly has caught my heart.i like his attitude ,his response, and his attacking sense. Not bordered about C.Ronaldo's exit,i am only thinking of a better replacement for him just like we did for beckam.United for life.

I agree with the comment on Berba. Much more to come. People don't realize how pivital he was on the pitch this year...almost lead the EPL in assists, while making it look so lazy.

Sir Alex fuerguson should try and keep Tevez and if it doesnt work out then David Villa or Ribery are best replacement for Ronaldo. I dont believe in Benzema because he cant change the game. Valencia fair for premiere league but not champion league material.
 |
Posted by Mona on 06/16/2009
The exit of CR7 is a blessing in disguise. When a single player begins to feel he does all the magic without the assistance of others, it sends negative signals. If only we cud keep Tevez, get back Ruud Boy for just a £1M. Bring in Benzema, Ribery and D. Costa to grow through the ranks. That boy will do better than CR-7 when given the opportunity. Nani will pick his pieces together, while Anderson, if you know him at Porto, then you know he will rise again.
But, don't you all think we will be needing an cover for defence. Please pray for united.

Fergie builds teams. MU has periods of pure dominance for a couple years or so. Then some big signings happen, other clubs buy more and more talent comes and MU adjusts. This next year for me will be a very competitive and a "small rebuilding" year. We have a few positions we have to figure out, and once that does and the chemistry gets there and the boys put the work in, we're back where we were last year and this year. This is just my opinion, I may be wrong and I hope I am. I'm looking forward to the transfer season. Ronaldo was a ridiculous player and hes making a class on his own, but his attitude, diving, and straight up baby-face whining made me curse his name one moment and his brilliance and creativity with the ball made me praise him the next. Its very stressful and frustrating watching him play msot of the time. I hope someone steps up in the locker room and gets the boys going this year. They're the best. And Fergie, is a legend.

We need addition in Midfield. Extremely good to have Hargo back, but we still need someone to take over for Scholes. At right back i am not convinced we can keep playing with O'Shea and Rafael. O'Shea is a cover and not a starter, and Rafael is too young. We should buy Maicon and the team would be more balanced. Last year all the attacks from the opposition came from the left. I personally like O'Shea, but he is not starter material. Next we need a replacement for Ronaldo. Ribery seems to be the best fit but he doesnt score as much. We need a cynical finisher as well. I would like to see David Silva instead of Ribery, and the get Valencia for a fraction of the price. Valencia has already proved himself in the EPL and he is a safer bet. I also think we should give Nani more playing time. I can see his talent, but he just needs a string of games to get his game together. He can prove to be an important player, as his shot is one of the best in the club. United Till I Die

We have lost a brilliant player but i am sure that Sir Alex Furguson will create another superstar for next year just like he aways does. I personally think that Ribery will do Ronaldo's job and more he is great. When it comes to David Villa superstar striker he could be a massive gain for the red devils. BORN UNITED AND WILL DIE AS A UNITED.

United 4 ever,i cn't hold the joy i derive bn a man u fan in africa especialy when they played in abuja. No doubt CR is great player but we got to give others chance to shw wt they can do with d ball,Nani should improve next season if he want to be relevance in o'traffold.United 4 life
 |
Posted by Lan on 06/17/2009
I think we should avoid Ribery. The whole point of selling Ronaldo was that 1 player is never bigger than the club, so why replace him with 1 single player who would then have stupendous expectations placed on him to be better than CR7?
I think no.1 priority should be defence- one more central defender to back up Evans (as inevitably Rio & Vidic will get injured), and cover for Evra. Maybe Fabio will get his chance. I think we can juggle RB ok between O'Shea/Brown/Rafael/Neville.
MF- I worry we have no real cover for the flanks- particularly left flank. I am loathe to rely on Nani, but I also think buying Valencia w ould be a mistake. There is another answer for our flanks. Hope the Croatian boys and Costa go well but it'd be unfair to expect them to step up in their first season in EPL.
If we cover the flanks then we don't need a striker even if Tevez goes- Rooney can then revert between being a supporting striker for Berba, and also be a goal-predator like he used to

Looking at the current United Team (with CR7 and Tevez leaving) , we just need to make just three signings...We need a good striker ( David Villa or Bezema ), a good Attacking midfielder(David Silva or Dacosta) and a good defensive midfielder ( De Rossi or Gatuso ).....Man United 4 Life.................
 |
Posted by Fahd on 06/17/2009
With Hagreaves coming back from injury , it will be great to see Anderson play more like an attacking midfielder with his skills and pace cause i dont think the defensive midfield osition working out for him that well......And also as a United fan , i pray Nani will play much better next season.......

Carrick - too clumsy and lacking in character to be a midfielder. Midfielders dictate the game and rally their teams for the charge against opponents. Carrick disappears very easily, makes terrible passes and is the first to panic. Should really be in the Carling Cup squad
Rooney - Fantastic, consistently good all through the season. Why are we crying over the departure of CR when we have Rooney? He takes the responsibility of the game on his shoulder, a true Man U player
Berbatov - Many people expect more from him, but will he ever deliver? I dont think I will put money on him..doesnt seem to care that to win a tournament you need to win matches
Tevez - good player, but too full of himself really. Wants to be like CR or Messi, no way. His absence or presence at MU will not make any difference to the overall output of the team in the next season
If only Fergie will allow the kids to play this season, Macheda, Campbell, Possibon etc
 |
Posted by Marc on 06/17/2009
The team needs 2 more strikers, a left winger, an attacking midfielder and a holding "boss" midfielder.
Valcencia from Wigan would be a good lef winger but only if we can get him for a good price. I wouldn't mind Benzima and Tevez. Would love to get David Villa but that is too much money as is Ribery.
I am praying that we land Costa but Anderson should also be used as an attacking midfielder. That is what he is but because he is young and can run Ferguson is using him as a destroyer. That is a waste of his talent.
If we don't buy a boss in midfield (Diarra would be good) then use Fletcher who has improved tremendously this season.

I disagree with the comments on Rio - as an ardent UTD fan I think he is the most over rated player at UTD. He is lucky that he has the best defender in the World in Vidic playing in front of him, who covers for Rio on most occasions. Rio nevers wins a challenge, he backs off players, he HIDES. Case in point - in the final vs. Barcelona, the shortest player on the field - Messi - out jumped and out manouvered Rio in positional play. World-class central defenders score regualrly from set pieces, how often has Rio done that at UTD? Rio only looks good when he has lots of time on the ball. I really think UTD could do a lot better than Rio Ferdinand.

don't believe Nani deserves being called "Nancy". Ribery will do well but will cost too much. anybody else signed as a direct replacement for CR7 will fail. Let Tevez go.. Macheda/Wellbeck will step up, give Nani his chance, if Hargo isnt fit WE MUST SIGN DE ROSSI, we need a more defensive minded left back also for CL nights. Im not worried about CR7s goals, Berba will shock y'all.

I believe we need a number of improvements. The goalkeeping department looks set to need another person at the back. Foster's a huge talent, and I think VDS has got at most a season or half a season as a top keeper? I don't see anyone else fit to be between the post at the moment. So one area that I really hope Fergie looks at.
Left back - Evra's been pretty brilliant all season, but we need a dependable back up as well. De Laet is promising, but not good enough. Fabio - looked good pre-season, and hyped well...but nothing too concrete
CR's replacement - I think Benzema will add pace, but David Villa + Silva sounds pretty good.
Left wing - I think nani's got one more season to prove himself; otherwise he'll be gone. I really hope Fergie will let Tosic play more games and give him exposure. he's been doing great for the reserves hasn't he?
Central Back - can we bring back pique? We'll definitely need another cover!
Berba - I think he'll shine.
Ando+ harg + Carrick will be *drool

An accurate review. For all those out there not happy with Berba. Wait and see. He was a new cog in a tried and true engine and at times it stuttered. Stuttered to the Premiership, Carling Cup, World Club Cup, Charity Shield, Runners Up in the ECL and Super Cup and semi-finalists in the FA Cup. Let's not get Hyper-Critical. Berbatov laying the ball off for Rooney playing in his rightful position sounds very promising to me.
Did everyone see the footage of Beck's looking so happy at the ECL semi final 2nd leg at the Emirates? Interesting. Maybe there is something in the air? Super-sub on the right?
Time to bolster the midfield. Scholesy and Ryan are sadly fading but are still very important for the squad. Getting Owen H back will help and Fletch keeps getting better. Rather than looking OS what about a Lennon, Ash Young or Milner? Utd thrive on players doing a job for the team. That's why SAF has done so well for so long.
I don't mind the Owen idea either VRed. Like it a lot.

all comments are good but dont you guys think glen johnson as right back is going to be a great signing. no one has talked about him.
nani will be better than CR if given the chance.
Hargreaves, carrick and anderson in midfield, ok and berba, rooney tevev/valencia in attack.
even a coup for yaya toure and eto'o wont be bad.
one united, one love.

I real thank all the last year's players most especially the tough players like X-tiano Ronaldo who managed to score 18 goals,Rooney with 8 goals and the rest of the players with their various goals scored at their capacities. It is now becoming very traditional and quit historical as far as Man U's principle is concerned. As being a serious supporter of the club, iam extremely glad with all the fruitful sttrugle u have so far achieved in the last year's league. There is normally a say that positive dreams are always achievasble that is why iam so happy for u guys. I there4 expect You and I to maintain the Tradition.Greatings to all the players, coaches and the other supporters for their tireless workdone that has led them to the success.

I thank the whole squad, the manager, the technical team and my fellow supporters for all they contributed to the Team's success last season. Most outstanding was Wazza and I hope to see much of him for coming seasons to come. Such dedication and unselfishness is very rare among most stars, but the youth has matured into a true Red Devil.
I only hope we can bring in Benzema and Villa/Ribery to beef-up our offensive options since we seem intact defensively. Though our midfield with be boosted by the return of Owen Hargreves, I still feel we need a more defensive minded midfielder (the Keano type)
I dont mind CR7 leaving. Tevez, Well, he can follow his heart and go. I would have worried if he scored more often, but as is the case, he can go to City and end each of the coming seasons with NO medal and helping them to starve off Relegation.

I may be the only person happy to see Ronaldo leave Man U. I cannot deny his talent, which is prodigious, but I cannot stand his attitude.
From the day 3 years ago when I saw him lobby the ref for his Man U teammate Rooney to get a red in the England - Portugal game in Germany 06, I began to dislike him. His diving and lackadaisical manner also mark against him.
And the one thing that should get every PK he takes invalidated is his stop-and-go routine. Line up the shot and put it in the net like a man, not a drunken sailor. I think it gets in his head more than it does the keeper's, just that no manager has ever dared cross his ego to get onto him for it.

i think man.utd should look into these positions...central striker ( benzema or fabiano ), defensive midfielder ( yahya toure should fit this role, remember how he played in the semi final against us last year ), right back ( maicon should be the man ), winger for CR's replacement ( i do not thick valencia is the right man ) and another back up central defender.
what do you guys think... the most weakness Man utd this year that we did not have a true outstanding central midfielder to control the game. really wish that to have a player like michael essien in our team
but i believe in sir alex to make sure man utd will do better next season......

I don't agree with the last comment that Tevez think is bigger than the club this is a guy that comes on the field and gave 110% of himself but yet as I admire sir Alex I don't think he treated him well by keeping him on the bench. Lazy Berbatov gets to start and played like he did care too much. If you were in his place you would have done the same, he deserves to be starting cause is a true warrior and with great work ethics. Christiano Ronaldo was right to say that tactics was very poor against Barca and I agree. How you going to a final with one foward player meanwhile Barca had all their superstars on the field. Tevez, Berbatov should have been on the field from the starts to strike fear in Barca heart. Tevez deserves a better chance to start last year he plays well upfront with Wayne Rooney and we won both titles. Berbatov dont belong in this team his style of play slows the team down. Thank you Tevez for your services as a Man U fan you deserve better opportunity.

With Ancelotti gone, I think Gennaro Gattuso may consider the move to Old Trafford, I know Alex iv very Keane on him to fill that role. We have the best youth/reserves in the league, and they'll be ready in the next 2 years. I think it's time to let the team carry on with the youngsters, not wasting 20mil on a big name. CR7, you were the biggest diver I can remember, adios MF!

Cashing out on CR is definitely correct, but Berbatov, Hargreaves and Nani were poor buys. Having missed Torres 2 years ago, missing Benzema this year will become a sin. The Reds paid only 25M for Torres but we paid 30M for Berbatov! Then better use Macheda and Wellbeck as the 4th striker especially for local cup competitions and league. More strength is needed at the back. O'Shea and Brown are not top class, so a right back and central are a must. Definitely need a heavyweight in midfield, but it's not as urgent as the goal. Not V.Valdes! How about Buffon?

no player is bigger than Man U. every player that thought so was sold.... to Real Madrid.... Ruud, Beckam and now CR7. Been waiting for him to leave actually, better for the team. After the so called big names were sold we always had more goalscorers in the team. Because they play for the team and not them-selfish-selves. we stopped playing to please the ego when the "big" names left. I think the team wiil do well next season and that some guys will now step up to the plate ie. Nani,Tosic, Fletcher and anderson.. to name a few. i welcome seeing Rooney in a more central role, but he was awesome as a left winger.
sorry to say though, but i think Scholes and Neville have reached that time when coaching should be on their minds.
hope we get Benzema. hope Manucho will be ready for the EPL

it would be nice if ManU could sign David Villa n Torres 4 the team. It would make a big impact on the attacking force of united. Make villa or torres wear those no.7 jersey. It's a legend jersey....GLORY..GLORY...UNITED!!!

now dat Ron has gone to real, all will see how odd babartov is and a waste to united. As old as fergi and if he wants rest of mind and chew gum ahead he should let anderson, oshae, babatov live united now.united need who will play behind a striker like Diego of W.breman,R.giggs though geting old.Barca out play us becos we lack this position.pls bring benzema and valencia of wigan to midfield, any brilliant player in the like of kaka, diego,Gerrad, fabregas behind our striker.

Hooray at last CR is gone,I think the rest of the players at united will shine better without him. There will be more stability they wont have to chase back to recoverv the ball so much.Every time CR lost the ball and sat down and cried the team was without one player for 30 seconds.Thirty seconds can be a long time in a game of football it can also win you games.Play on ManU I can see the young players surpassing the abilities of Barca and R madrid. Please donot bring in any famous faces or old legs let the team play on.

With CR leaving I only believ that Nani will improve his game as CR was blocking his development.
I have a lot of faith with Sr Alex. He knows what do do.
You just wait!

Basically United only need to strengthen 2 position after the departure of Tevez & Ronaldo... with credit crunch bite in, we cant really expect Glazer to flash the cash as much as we used to do. Valencia is probably direct replacement for Ronaldo, and I really hope fergie can bring back Rossi with the buy back clause he placed when he was sold. Rossi was trained by United, and fall into UEFA category of club train player, and he's as good as Tevez can be. Other than that, we will leave it for our youth player to continue develop and hopefully, more fletcher, brown and Nevilles will come out of the rank. Macheda probably just around the corner, although he's from Lazio earlier... who cares anyway

to rui whu said rio is overrated to just backs of players and hide
u obviously are not a defender coz thats wat defenders do, they slow down the attackers by backing off slowly enough to give time for mids or whoever to get back and cover
i also believe that fergusons plan is for vidic to put more pressure on attackers while ferdinand watches for late runners into the box
An i also believe that buying players based on reputation like ribery and villa won't help us,
if he just simply bought expensive players then ronaldo would proberly still be playing in portugal and players like scholes giggs neville and beckham wouldn't be as good, players are only as good as they obey tactics, ronaldo shined because fergy emphasised his gameplan around ronny
but with ronny gone expect a more narrow style of play by fergy with reliance on mid more than flankers then usual and rooney being the main player for us with lots more goals from mid and def in set peices
REMEMBER WHERE U HEARD THIS!
