There is a terrible air of gloom around the North East at the moment. It is hardly St. Tropez at the best of times but all four of their major teams are in serious trouble. The fans of the region deserve much better than what has been served up for them this season. I always expect one of the teams in the bottom three to put together a Herculean run of results in the last few games and save themselves. It has happened enough times for this expectation to be reasonable. See West Hams controversial late run or even Brian Robson's West Brom for further reference. What is more, seasoned United watchers, for the last few years, have circled this game on the fixture list and written the word banana-skin next to it.
Ferguson has done an unbelievable job of rotating the squad this season. I expected Ronaldo to be left out, not just because of the game against Arsenal but because he seems to needle this club more than any other. This would not be a good time for him to get injured. Besides, the only completely undroppable player we have at the moment is Wayne Rooney. Contrast this to our opponents fortunes and you will note that Stuart Downing has started every single one of their league fixtures this season. Must have been tough work for the bloke.
The manager had complained about the early kick-off but fortunately it was the men in red who still seemed blurry eyed. I was intrigued to see how the partnership between Berbatov and Macheda might work but was alas pretty disappointed. I have tried to hold back the tide of negative opinion about the Bulgarian. I think he holds the ball up superbly and throughout December and January he made several very important contributions. Dare I say it, he also speaks to the media an awful lot less than Mr. Tevez does. Up here at the Riverside though, Berbatov did not light the blue touch paper. He gave the ball away with his first couple of touches and then seemed to drift off. Shame, I am sure he still has a lot to offer.
Middlesbrough huffed and puffed a little in the early stages but our defence seemed to have the making of them and the game started to remind me of quite a few others this season. We were in control, did not overexpend energy and just waited for our moment to strike. We have not contributed to the national stockpile of adrenalin as much as United teams of yesteryear. A few years ago it seemed as if our players used to jump down rigging with a cutlass in their teeth before the start of play. Now there is an icy calm and a sense of getting the job done.
Ticking off his 801st day of work well done was Mr. Ryan Giggs. His finish showed enduring class and the goalie didn't even have the chance to move. The Boro centre backs didn't seem to bothered about stopping him and if you watch the replay closely you can catch a glimpse of Giggsy checking his watch before deciding where to place the ball. The game was over.
The second goal is a good example of why I am in love with this game. Rooney's first touch and vision for the through ball were utterly inspiring and Park's finish was as clinical as any you will see in the league. It was also great that the move was started by Macheda and on this form Rooney must be the most fearsome opponent on the planet.
Boro are one of the few clubs left in this league who I consider the be run properly. Their chairman is a local boy done good who sticks with his managers and tries to do things the right way. The days of Ravanelli and Juninho are behind them but, despite the utter dourness of the Riverside and our recent run-ins, they are a good part of English football. It was heartening to see a banner in their stand saying WE SHALL OVERCOME. Somebody needs to tell their players that.
Thoughts on the Arsenal tie:
As the 95/96 season came to its nerve-jangling climax somebody remarked at half time of the game at St. James Park that United had been "murdered nil nil". I feel a sense of deja vu here. We outfought, outclassed and outran the Gunners but only have a one goal lead to show for it. Newcastle (the murderers of quote past) went on to lose that game. Not for a second would I directly compare this United team with that Geordie choke machine but the precedent is there.
If Arsenal get their tip-tappy game going they are capable of scoring many a goal and teams that have gone for our throats this season, shamed as I am to say it, have done alright for themselves. I think we will have enough in the tank but beware an early Arsenal goal.

Good opining around here Mark. Have no fear about Arsenal. We just need to do the basics like we did against Porto: close them out, give them no chance to play football and utilise every chance we get. It is always especially sweet to beat Arsenal. We should do this quite easily. Arsenal just aren't good enough to beat us - home or away. Man for man, tactical discipline, big game stamina and calm mentality we are light years ahead of Arsenal. This should be Q.E.D - quite easily done.

nice opinion...i love arsenal kind of play but u cant play all the season with same tactics n strategy...u will get bust up...Man U can be so success of this coz of changing different style of playing...this will make our opponent off guard....they will simply not enough time to think for defence when attack...MAN U last season play all the fast ball now we playing more possesion n steady football...this make hard for oppponent to read our game plan n coulndt catch up our pace....u can see how did barcelona play with chelsea...if we play onli through pass tat will be like them cant play long ball n cant change any tactics..if they meet the physical playing team they will surely cant play like arsenal draw too much..this is wat i like about MAN U with SIR Alex Ferguson...of course sometimes is bad decision but overall is best for the team..we all can see arsenal they need couple years to train up all the short pass and understanding..not good for overalll..sorry no offence..opinion onli

Mark,
Great post, buddy. First of all, getting up in New York City at 6:30 AM on a Saturday to watch that match was not much fun either. Secondly, and more importantly, I still am one of those brave people who support Berbatov a great deal because I think he has an unrivaled touch when he's on and I think he is a great distributor of the ball to the wings. In the interest of fairness I will say that he sometimes can kill an odd-man rush with his lack of speed and aggressiveness moving forward (I notice he often opts to hold the ball and wait for others to develop the play rather than looking for his own long-range strike), but I think his playing style, especially when contrasted to the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo, make him a valuable asset. I don't want to argue whether he is worth 30 million or not, but I think he has still been an important impact player for the club.
Also, if the back four come out and play against Arsenal like they did in the 1st leg, United are going to Rome.

I agree... the Arsenal Game does give me jitters.. Like you mentioned, arsenal on their day can be pretty awesome .... but I think UTD can pull this off... remember, we do have the firepower to score an away goal and put them under SERIOUS pressure

Man U & Arsenal match ups are always a biggie here in Nairobi, Kenya.Am telling you the mood here is as pensive as can be. Kick off is at 2145 hrs and all pubs broadcasting the game will be packed as usual. The trash talking will be of unbelieveable proportions. My two cents, Man U will clinch it but their mental toughness will be on test at the Emirates. We have everything going for us and it's just a matter of tightening up the ship. Go Manchester?!?

hold off on berba...saf is quitely finding a niche for him...his holding role against arsenal last week was superb..don't think he gave the ball away once...could have done better at boro. as for his style, it is a needed contrast against the rooneys. tevezes and ronaldos who can be rockets...rooney must run 10km at same pace in every game! hopefully we will see berba's true potential next season when we go for the fourth straight epl title..another first!!. as for tuesday at the emirates, roo and co. to get the one goal needed to send us to italia to do yet another first! what a season.

quite some good comments guys.its quite clear the Reds are hot to go. the Boro game showed just how utilization of resources can bring.who said Park doesnt click, the boys goal was what is required to kill a game,it shows how Rooney was waiting for Parks partnership.the two lads can do a magnificent job, good defence penetration, exact passing and keeping the game in tempo.Rooney knows where each of the players next move and the Park's cross concluded this.for Giggs its all about experience and timely thinking.i still believe Anderson is a smarter needle to Arsenal.Tevez is great too but should be abit creative when near the goal"from far you can score".i beleive we still have enough to beat Arsenal on tuesday."quick recovery Rio and Wes Brown". Vidic needs your partnership. MAN UTD lets GO GO GO.

have been loyal MU fan since 1935.seen them all big and small but think that 2009 squad is the best all round group yet.Sir Alex deserves huge credit but let us not forget the great support he receives from the boardroom to the groundskeepers.unlike certain other clubs there has been no public demonstration of any internal discord which is exemplary.I am a proud ex-Mancunian and shall be sitting before my TV screen wearing my red and white scarf urging MU on to win the Champions Leauge Cup for an unprecendeted consecutive time

Viva Ronaldo viva united, If Mr.CR7 is mentioned on the line up with the likes of Rooney and Giggs, these are the kind of names that can win you matches even before kick off. United have what it takes to beat Arsenal be it in old trafford or at the Emirates. Come what may, the mental toughness of MAN UTD will be proved at the Emirates.
VIVA RONALDO VIVA UNITED

Hi guys! Well it's said that soccer is soccer and it's not over untill it's over, but if feel that MAN united seem to have the guts to take on the Gunners at their own back yard and get a positive result. Compounded by other factors like xperience, stamina, pedigree n the urge to take the prestigious trophy in a row. God bless MAN U!!!!

What a match! What a United!! Today Man U has proved a great will and resilient of a true champion. This ruthless annihilation of Arsenal today has clearly distinguished a defference between men and boys.It was a comprehensive show of supremacy. To me, this very game represent a final before final. NOTE, the very altitude that Man U is cruising at the moment, it is only a boing 747 that can stop them. As i said earlier, the champion league title and premier league titile is to me a forgotten issue. Its now a foregone conclusion. What a match! What a United!! be a United!!! United we stand. BRAVO.

I am a United fan in Malaysia and I think we should not get carried away with the win against Arsenal. The Gunners were very poor defensively. A slip by Gibbs and a rookie mistake by Almunia gifted United 2 goals. Barca or Chelski would be different propositions altogether. However, if United maintain their defensive discipline and attacking verve - all should go according to plan. I feel gutted for Fletcher though ... he got the ball.

All the comments here just show what an international phenomenon this Man Utd is, amazing!! I am from South Africa, we are resolved to one cause, brothers-in-arms, Rome here we come. I'm also quite ambivalent about Berba, was he really worth BP30mil- dunno it's only been one season. My patience is growing thin on Ronaldo. I think Schneider, Benzema and Ribery and defensive cover in the middle of the park should bring us more trophies. Anderson should start Champs league final ahead of Scholesy. It's about time he became more consistent. We need two more hard-working Ji-Sung's, wow that would make us a Super Team. With Owen back this would be the best Utd Team EVER!PERIOD!Possible Starting line up: Van Der Sar (G), Evra (LB), Rio (CB), Vidic (CB), O'Shea/New Recruit (RB) Hargreaves can play here, Schneider (LW); Ribery (RW), Carrick (CM), Anderson (CM), Rooney (AM), Benzema (FS), Bench:(Ridiculous) Hargreaves, Scholes, Ji-Sung, Tevez,Two Braza bros, Berba, Wellbeck, Evans etc. WOW!WOW!
