Manchester United

Reports of Manchester United’s demise have been exaggerated. The Los Angeles Earthquake was a disaster. The eruption of Mount St. Helen’s was a disaster. Every single one of Glenn Hoddle’s haircuts in the eighties was a disaster. Drawing 2-2 with Porto is an understandable result and a retrievable situation. On the other hand, Hoddle’s barbour will never work again.

Firstly, Porto were magnificent. They attacked the game from the start, moved the ball around slickly and chased our players into the dust. Fernando and Gonzalez linked up superbly and would have given Brazil circa 1970 a hard time on last night’s form. Not to mention that in Hulk they boast the best named player since Congolese striker Bongo Christ. Yep, United were up against it.

By my calculations the last time United put in a truly worthy performance, one that makes the blood boil with excitement and your voice hoarse, was against Chelsea several months ago. We are still top of the league, remain in every competition and have even won a trpohy since then. So does this mean that we have been the luckiest side in history and are currently being found out? The simple answer is no. The players we have are quality and have shown their worth, I should imagine that it is not easy to give an Oscar winning performance every match. Especially not when you are playing so much. No other team even has the pressure of entertaining so impatiently placed upon them, only United.

Ferguson, as was widely reported after the Fulham loss, took a gamble on the Villa fixture. It could have been moved but he kept it on Sunday to give our players an extra day to recover, therefore jeopardising premium fitness against Porto. We were, admittedly, 9 parts outrageously lucky and 1 part inspired against Martin O’Neill’s men, but we got the result.

As soon as I settled into my seat for the European game I knew the players would tire towards the end. Two high pressure matches inside 52 hours is a helluva lot to ask of anybody. To concede a late goal was not entirely unexpected considering these circumstances. It just seems such a shame now because we were so close.

On th-glass-is-half-full side of things, we have played those two matches now and a vital victory in the league was obtained along with a workable result against a team who have played their best game in Europe this season. We lost neither.

Granted, at times last night we seemed to be 11 individuals, rather than a team, and there were points when I wondered if Porto’s midfield were the only ones to get off the bus. We have largely been carried this season by the unspeakably good form of the defence. That bubble has now popped (step forward Johnny Evans) and it is time for the attackers to stand up and be counted. Rooney is scoring goals, Tevez proved once again his remarkable penchant for scoring at important times and this lad Macheda should have Berbatov thinking very hard about his work rate too.

Next up we have a four day rest (crikey me!) followed by a freefalling Sunderland side. Then, a four day rest (Dear Lord!) followed by a winner takes all tussle in Porto. There are no guarantees in this life but I am hoping (I always do) that there is life the Red Devils yet. Let’s get behind the team.

Man Utd escaped from disaster last night. Opponent was just incredible. Man Utd gave Porto the chance of playing so easily in their half and leaving too much space in midfield for them to express despite 5 men in this area.Van Der Sar could not be blamed for the two goals against him, Vidic was to his standards as well as Evra. Scholes, O Shea & Evans was below previous, Carrick, Fletcher & Park have done what they could, Rooney was very good but was so alone at the front and Ronaldo did not have enough room to deliver. Tevez and Giggs did their job as usual. Let's cross our fingers for the second leg. We still have the cards in our hands and let's hope for the best yet to come.

Come on MAN UTD. We still believe.

i'm with ya mate, united are under overwhelming pressure which no one seems to understand. I mean, they are still in contention to become the first quituple champions and thats just crazy! i am still confident they can overthrow porto though, fergie is an extremely hungry 67 year old and will take them all the way

Posted by kossy nworah on 04/08/2009

i think tevez should leave (forget about ny e-mail address). macheda should play the 2nd half against sunderland to increase his self belief.let us leave the champions lge and concentrate on the league and FA Cup.

I really agree with you. Man United always look at the bright side and never give up. This is part of the club's values and strengths. If the team give their best they can beat any team.

Posted by Graham Calderwood on 04/08/2009

Couldn't agree with you more, mate!

Manchester United are not in good form. The defense which was looking superb in the mid-season is now looking completely exposed. Last four matches we have been scored against 11 times while we have scored just 6. The passing was really very bad at the start of the match and Manchester Untied were looking very different from the last match. But Hopefully, we are going to win all coming ahead and surely All the trophies will be ours !!!!! :) Cheers!! GO MANCHESTER UNITED!!!!!!!!

Very good, insightful analysis. fellow red devil faithful should check out the take on BBC by Phil McNuttley too. i'm backing my team 100% as i have for over a decade. lot of ppl have written united before at their own peril. i'm confident that even after getting stretched in terms of squad depth (particularly the defence), we can win the 2nd leg. C'MON YOU RED DEVILS!

Posted by johnson adegboye (nigerian) on 04/08/2009

the defenders particular Neville and O'shea are too slow to react to fast and skilful attackers. ALEX can use youthful and hungry players like RAFEAL, FABIO than age, tired legs.

Posted by obert Musongo on 04/08/2009

The 2-2 draw with Porto has just revealed we need a back in terms of the defence and midfield. Its high time SAF thought about this

Some time ago, somebody wrote that it would be wise to aquire a defender to replace Gabriel Heinze,s departure. I thought this was essential, but that it was also required to get backups for Gary Neville and Paul Schole. Against Sir Alex put up a post saying Manu would aquire no one during the transfer window, that there was ample strength in defense, naming severañ players available. It is now evident (and has olway been evident) that if Ferdinand and/or Vidic are unavailable, our defense is weak, and so is our midfield, without Owen Hargreaves. Have you got the inside voice to suggest that action is required, in odrder to remedy this situation? It cost us the Champions League two years ago: defeat against Milan in Rome, with Vidic having to play the crucial match badly indjured, because there was no trustworthy backup). It may quite possibly cost us dearly this year. We may even lose ALL the trophies we now hope to heap up.

Id say thats a very realist view of the situation. united's fixture list has been our greatest undoing, and these two latest matches were surely those we had the highest probability of losing, due to the sheer fatigue. that we havnt is gr8, even after conceding two home goals.wat one hopes now is that the injury list gets shorter, and that the returning players are also ready for 100% each minute matches.

Posted by Varun Arora on 04/08/2009

I sincerely wish the same and wait, to hopefully see a magical performance against Porto. All I hope is that Ronaldo dives less and passes more.

Man United Forever !!

Your post refused to send my comments, on the ground that I had sent to many posts in a short time. That was funny, since that was the first post I put up in my life!

iam just surprised that so many of suporters are having douts that wel not win next tuesday in porto,pl how many time have manu proved that we can beat anyone anywhere ? manu2 porto 0 come on guys have faith

I admired the game we played. Sentiments apart, Porto were the better side but sometimes i do feel relying on Gary Neville could be a calamity. Im not pointing accusing fingers at him but I think its time he left the team.I would have preferred him switching fletcher to right back and bringing on a defensive midfielder to cover the mid-field. we had just 5 mins to play an we let it slip. I hope it doesnt cost us too much on Wednesday.Victory assured for Man Utd in Porto.

Posted by Jasjit on 04/09/2009

Is it just me or is cristiano playing way below his par.....does anyone agree that maybe SAF should bench him and keep him as an impact player.
Anyways...hope we win next week......

Posted by MD_MANu on 04/09/2009

Overall this fixture leaves us in the mid state that yes we can be weka defensively. However in turn that means our offense side of the ball and play in the offense third should really pick up on their opportunites. Precise passing and possesion will beat anyone . And will ronaldo please not give up the ball every dribble down the feild. Im A HUGE RONNY FAN BUT HIS ANTICS ON THE BALL NEED TO BE FOCUSED TOWARDS PASSING AND SCORING

Posted by Cameron on 04/09/2009

Porto was fantastic, We devils got by with a draw. I am confident that we can pull out a win at porto and at sunderland this next week. I think that berbatov needs to be working harder and that we should play tevez more i like his style. Anyway against porto we have top play as a team and play a solid defense otherwise we r in some trouble. Have faith. Red Devils all the way

Posted by raysagres on 04/09/2009

MAn. U is in deep trouble,Porto is really tough at home, unless CR7 comes up with a big game or Heldon the Porto goalie resorts to his old form MAN. U is done stick the fork in them. Where is NAni,the Brazilian twins, skilled players that can hold the ball and make a pass, move CR7 more in front of the goal and have Nani cross the ball in this is not a time for individuals, its time tom feed the ball to your best player.

Posted by Marcus on 04/09/2009

The true mark of a fan is more than just supporting a team when it's winning --- it's sticking with your team through thick and thin, especially the thins.

We must always remember that success cannot be measured by transfers as in the case of Chelsea. WHen u have too huge a squad and blessed with no injuries, squad rotation always breeds discontent for supposedly star players!

We've already got 2 out of 5. Strive hard and know that we'd always be behind you, Man Utd! (as have been for the last two decades!)

Same situation we were in when we tied at Old Trafford 1-1 against Inter and had to go to Italy having never won on Italian soil. Great night, 3-2 win. Lets hope history repeats and we get the first win on Portugese soil to go to the semi's. Based on some comments on the defense situation, it was funny to watch Pique interviewed after the Barc win...didn't we have him at one time? Would have been nice to have him when Rio or Vidic were out.

Posted by Kai on 04/09/2009

I love the last "Let’s get behind the team."

That's what it's all about at this phase of the season, and to go against all claims that the supporters of Man Utd only support winning team. Here's where characters counts. Lovin it.

The Los Angeles Earthquake? I think you mean the San Francisco earthquake.

Posted by Kevin on 04/09/2009

I have every confidence that the lads will not only win in Porto, but will get on a roll and take the remaining games. All trophies will be at Old Trafford at seasons end! I do have some concerns about Ronanldo however. Does anyone else notice that he does not chase back on defense when possession is lost? This flaw puts our defense under great and unnecessary pressure. Soccer is not just about scoring goals, you have to stop the opponents from scoring also. Get in the "team" concept and help your team-mates out Rolando!

Posted by diabaig on 04/10/2009

We need more than faith. Let's be realistic. United are going through a bad phase (Like Liverpool and Chelsea have done already). It's come at a bad time. Neville should be retired. His slack marking gave goals to Aston Villa and the second goal to Porto. O'Shea has become a brute with barely acceptable skills over the last few seasons and, sad to say, Scholesy is now firmly past it. The defence is suddenly a mess without Ferdinand and Da Silva. Even Evra and Vidic are playing lousy! Sheesh, what a mess. I think they will exit to Porto, make the final and lose in the FA Cup, and win the league by the skin of their teeth. The close season should see some serious retooling of the squad. Long live United!

Posted by Silver on 04/10/2009

Manutd under pressure but.. i think they can get through in porto. They just unlucky and fergi must do somthing for his team especially in defend area...but i really sure that MU can get through.

Posted by minque on 04/10/2009

the lads were not into this game, i mean when 3 guys are not focussed then the 9 may switch off that is why we conceded that late equilizer which is not characteristic of man united come on united!

Posted by greg on 04/10/2009

although man utd are playing so many games and are fatigued they can still win all of the trophies....just look what happened in 1999

Posted by MUFC on 04/10/2009

technically man utd don't have to win a 3-3 draw would see them through to the semi-final of the champions league (man utd win 3-2 on away goals)

Posted by Rishi Dayal on 04/10/2009

Well said, Mr. Payne. United are under extreme pressure - we already won 2, yet we still have 3 major ones left!!! However, as a die-hard Man U fan, I think that, if any team can overcome this pressure, it's Manchester United. GLORY GLORY MAN UTD!!!!!

Posted by Varun Arora on 04/11/2009

As far glory is concerned all depends how we play defensively. Also if we can pull a good margin victory even at the 'Stadium Of Lights', the lads will be up and roaring and it will give them a certain boost for the 2nd leg of the Champions League. But the best thing that could happen to us is the return of Rio Ferdinand for the Porto match and even if there is an outside chance we should keep our fingers crossed and hope for this miracle to happen.

Manchester United Forever !!

Don't give up and put your guards on it and put more effort and have a chance to win the UEFA Champions League , FA Cup and English Premiership Championship Let us rejoice and celebrate for winning the 5 trophy
Glory Glory Man United
We are the champions
We are no. 1 in the world

Posted by Burgsy on 04/11/2009

It all depends on the line up. Some united players e.g gary neville, paul scholes, evans, oshea, park, nani have lost their confidence and shouldnt start big games. Tevez is key and should play against porto. I dont think SAF knows who is strongest team is. It didnt take huddink long to know. If you see this starting line-up against porto, then know united will win 2-0. VAN DA SAR, BROWN or RAFAEL(rb), FERDINAND/VIDIC, EVRA(lb) Rested RONALDO(right), Rested CARRICK, ANDERSON, ROONEY (left), TEVEZ AND BERBA. These are all confident players.

We just won against Sunderland thanks to Macheda again. The performance was much better than the one against Porto i believe. Hope Rio will be back by wednesday and we'll maintain a cleansheet once again. and return Porto the favour by scoring 2 past them ofcourse ;-)

UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITEEEEEEEEEEED!!
