Opponents are a little bit like carpets. If you (p)lay them right the first time, you can walk all over them for years. Porto must still be reeling from that 4-0 tonking we gave them in '97 because they were in a very strong position going into this match.
Despite United being wobblier than that rope bridge from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in recent weeks. Porto still couldn’t dominate. United controlled this match and for once, we have a performance as satisfying as the result. We also have a clean sheet for a change. Geronimo.

It makes a refreshing change to sit at the keyboard with a few positives to dwell on rather than attempting to hide the dread I have genuinely felt over the last few weeks. I do not know if we are or out of the woods yet, but the team’s display certainly calms the nerves a little.
I am extremely pleased to see Anderson back. I was beginning to wonder what had happened to the little dynamo who bossed the game at Arsenal in November 2007. Perhaps he did not own the pitch in Oporto but he made his presence felt. Those are exactly the kind of fresh legs we will need in the run in. This was a good match for him as he understands what makes all of those South American opponents of him tick and he did break up a lot of their attacks.
Then of course, we have Mr. Ronaldo to mention. He really seems to turn it on when we have Portuguese opposition. That goal was an advanced example of what quality footballers can do. Bobby Charlton would have blushed.
The thing that makes me happiest right now is Porto’s inability to even get near our goal. This means two things. The defence played well (welcome back Rio) and the midfield played well. VDS does still look a little permeable at times but the guys in front of him have started to do their jobs again.
Enjoy this moment of calm, it surely won’t last. United always, always make us suffer and there will be heart attacks again before the end of the season. Mark my words. For once though, we have had a better week than Liverpool. And that’ll do nicely.

I agree with you. I was at the edge of my seat for most of the times. One-goal lead is too slim to my liking.
But I did see two things which I liked and hoped that we could keep it till the end of the season:-
1) Amount of possesion
2) Opponents could only strike from outside the penalty box.
When we have possesion, that means we are in no danger of conceding and have a chance to score. And when opponents can only shoot from 20-yards out, probability of conceding, does get smaller.
So bring on Everton, and let's book a place to the next FA Cup final !

I share your relief, Mark.
I was not so pleased about the goal (and the win) as i was with the performance- looks to me like we're getting back to our professional best. Solid, perfect positional play- we deserved the win, no doubt. Turning our thoughts forward now, what do you think about the everton game? And the UCL semi? Can we make both finals?
Finally, a question- Sir Alex's signing of Hargreaves for me was his most important of the so called 'new cycle', i.e. Building a team arund Rooney and Ronaldo. my question is- how big an impact would he have had were he fit? Would we have gone through sticky patch street these last few games at all?

Excellent piece Mark. You are right; this was a decent performance, the first in a long time. Anderson was my man of the match, running the show with style and swagger. As for Ronaldo, well, a thunderbolt out of a clear sky. We should close all discussion on the goal of the season and hand Ronaldo the award without further ado.

Mark,
First of all Congs to all MANUs.
Last night's performance looked a bit like what we have known of MANU for many years.
Rooney, Ferdinand, Vidic, Ronaldo, Anderson, Oshea and Carrick(improved as the game progressed) did well. compared to the last five games, all the lads improved significantly. But let me tell you two tactics that made us win the game;
1. Closing the oponents quickly. Whenever a porto player was given a ball, our player was quick to either be first on the ball or atleast close an opponent up and thus prevent him from doing any harm.
2. Recover the ball once lost. If you remember in my last comments, i did say that this is where we have been punished before; even Ronaldo at times pulled back to retrieve the ball once lost or defend(i was very happy to see him doing that).
Brown should be back soon because we are going to need his services badly.
Use the same tactics for Arsenal plus counter attack and we are to Rome.
MANU-Forever.

Fantastic piece! To be honest, I think we will have a few problems against a rejuvenated Arsenal side. It will go down right to the wire, Ronaldo magic or not. I'd be a happy man if United win the domestic treble. Anything beyond that, would be a sensational feat.

Yes, its true that United was a little "sloggished" for the past few weeks and that took a toll on me, but thank God they answered us with that very important victory over Porto. We are not there yet, but the dream has come alive again. Go United, we know you can do it.

fantastic football from tthe Red Devils.I'm from Kenya and I relish every moment when United play. One thing though,I dont like it when our defenders dance backwards when a winger like Lennon or Walcot is approaching them. This is common with O'shea,Neville and Evra.Otherwise bring Arsenal on!

It was realy refreshing to have a clean sheet and the performance was coming to what we expect from ManU. Just a few worries, our speed or lack of it is not what we want to see from our team. When you consider the team we are going to play against- Arsenal, then you see what will be required.
Then we have our boy Nani. He was not the right person on the field yesterday. His decision making is not to standard. Fergie has to help this boy reach his potential before throwing him on on such an important game.
Otherwise it was enjoyable to see us controlling the game again after those past 3 weeks. Long live Fergie.

i am a very committed man united fan from Nigeria, congratulation united...i would like sir Alex to take note of this...its becoming too obvious that Nani does not understand the flow of game in man united..he dribbles aimlessly without knowing he is playing for manchester united..i will suggest a loan to Arsenal where he can dribble allthe way through...although its just an advise....

Well done. This article hits the nail on the head... directly!! For the past 4 weeks, this side that I have supported since i was 8yrs old looked like my sunday evening runabout. Many of them seemed to forget how to pass and defend.
Last night's display was a refreshing reminder of what this TEAM can do when they show up... all of them.
Granted, Ronaldo's wonder goal did the job, but more than that, he did a lot of defending too... something that was missing from him for a while.
Ryan, seems EVERGREEN. The entire team gave a display that said... "we may not be playing our best football, but if you want it... you have to come and take it"!!
And with gritty, determined work like last night, no one will find that an easy task.
Welcome back Berba and Andos!!
The hustling and closing was done quickly and high up the park. They were kept wide and not allowed to get around our backs, the passing was crisp and accurate. We were composed on the ball.
Well done, bring Everton on!!

I know I know it was a rough past couple of weeks but the thing you gotta love is that there is always a possibility of a fightback(villa, sunderland) or a win right to the final, Machada has proven to be the new 'ole gunnar' and look forward to seeing his face again. it is getting late in the season and this is where UNited Get down to the Heavy duty. With Ferdinand and Vidic together at last we only need to score a goal and we are in every game.
P.S. its not like we don't have the most experienced and trophy weighted manager the premiership has ever seen or anything.

I for one was satisfied with the team on a whole and this performance kept us on course for an unprecedented quintuple in titles.I was particularly impressed with the performance of Rooney, for his effective runs on the wing which always had the Porto defence confused,Anderson, whose determination to win the ball gave the opposition no time to settle and don't forget our Wonderboy Ronaldo whose strike will almost definitely make top goal of the season. This was a composed performance by a great team which kept possession and defended with passion. It is a step in the right direction as the last few games were shaky(if you know what I mean). But with the quality of players our squad possesses the future looks bright and no team can stop us. GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED!!

hmmmmmmmm - i don't know if maybe i'm seeing things differently but united barely scraped through - had ronaldo not put in that schorcher (okay i'll conceed it is a great goal) united would have been out....but i suppose united supporters just see a bare scrape through win on aggregrate against the worst team without a doubt in the final 8 well maybe tied for seventh with bayern 'leak goals like someone who can't hold their bladder' munich

Finally, Sir Alex did the right thing - pushing Ronaldo as Centre Forward. Let us be frank and honest, he is a good goal scorer, who is superb at dribbling and fantastic on the air. At the moment, he is the perfect alternative to the misfiring Berbatov. So, let him play as CF. Let him be our new RVN!
This would also allow the likes of Nani, PJS, and Zoran Tosic to develop their skills on the flanks. And, at the same time, less frustation for the fans like me, when Ronaldo could not deliver the balls into the box, when he plays as winger...

Although it was a boring match, they got the job done. And I'm pretty sure that alot of fellow Manchester United supporters will be pleased with the result. Ronaldo's early goal was superb, but despite being an important match, it was a snooze fest.

I guess everyone else has been saying just about the same thing. Let's hope we've turned the corner for good.
One thing I couldn't understand during the game though was why SAF would want to bring Nani on towards the end of the game. Here's a guy we paid loads of money for and he's supposed to be the next ronaldo but he can't even keep hold of possession! That's the very reason why Park Ji Sung is such a valuable player.
What a pity that Nani and I look alike enough that I'm called that fairly often.

I have been a United supporter since 1977, the days of Sammy McIlroy, and onto 80's during the Bryan Robson era, and of course, during the golden generation of the 90's with Giggsy, Becks, the Nevilles, Cantona, Scholes, Keano. While we have had great players over the years, and with the greatest of respect to Robbo, Giggsy and Cantona, this boy wonder Ronaldo is in a class of the highest level. What a talent! I have seen Bryan Robson hit some shots...indeed who can forget the cracker against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool in 1985 (in case you haven't seen it, get that tape) or the one he hit against Brighton in the 1983 FA Cup Final replay to win our first trophy in many, many years, but the one of Ronaldo against Porto...that shot will forever live in the annals of the greatest goals in United history. In terms of memory, put it up there with the Giggsy magical run in the FA Cup semi-final run against Arsenal...interestingly our next opponent. Go Busby Babes!!!!

A much improved team performance. Beforehand, I really thought we would have to go for broke, playing attacking football with a 4-4-2 formation. The early goal was simply sensational! Rooney is the most selfless player in the world, and what a performance he turned in.
The defence was very solid, but what has happened to Evra? He was arguably the best left back in the world until recently, now, his positioning and the timing of his tackling, makes him look like a rank amateur.
Still, I have a feeling that Giggs will be crowned as player of the year for his contribution over the last 19 years. He is sensational.
It will be tough on Sunday against Everton, but every game at this stage of the season will be like a cup final. So come on you Reds and "Viva" Ronaldo

Just my two cents worth;
It was far from a convincing win, however we scored early and that may have changed the way we played.
What a goal by Ronaldo, but what a scary celebration....I was watching that game thinking...."Great our best player is not acting like a spoilt littel brat for once" but the look on his face after scoring is concerning, s is the lack of reference by fergie of his efforts, I suggest a massive rift, and I hope not as we would hate to loose him in the same way as Becks and Ruud and Stam and others (all faling out with fergie).
Nani seems to not have a clue, but I do know why Fergie put him on...the last minutes we needed to counter attack against the additional players going forward and fast running players always do that best.
Rio and Vidic look great together as usual but we need them both fit in order to beat arsenal.
The way Ronaldo glared at fergie after scoring and ran towards the bench really disturbs me, last week I wanted cr gone not now!!

I think Sir Alex should give Anderson more time now so that he can improve with more games. We seem to have problems on the right back. I don't think Gary will ever return to his best and I think Sir Alex should get a good right back, and the defence will be OK.

Good professional display from the entire team. Great to see Anderson back to what he does best. its been way too long coming this season...Rio? what more can i say? (to think some retard said he was utd's worst defender and isnt world class...i shudder)Nani and scholes, imo, didnt need to come on. yes, maybe to relief tired players but for once in my life i would have preferred fletch or park ahead those two...WE MISS YOU, HARGREAVES!!!!

I watched that game on the edge of my seat. Though there were some improvements in the way things went especially in the defense with the return of Rio and in the mid-field with Anderson in the middle. Ronaldo's goal was out of this world! I want to agree that Ronaldo should be allowed to play behind Ronney and Barbertov, to give him better view of the goal. We need more of that to be able to upset our opponents in the tittles run-in. Nani is a wastful player, Fergie should make him understand that quick decision when he is with the ball will do some good if he wants to continue playing in the present squard.

Really, the return of Anderson in mielfield is a good news. We all hope that the return leg against Porto has given Man Utd the boost up needed to finish this season without any doubts now. I still believe to reshuffle our miedfield so as they can hold on till end of season. I do not have any doubts with the team as the players will take the remaining matches with a new mindset from now.
We must take note that despite Liverpool has been playing good football recently, they are still trailing in the EPL and out in the Champions League. This is really a big blow for them. We must optimize on this to achieve our goals.

We witnessed a great game after the recent problems but for me after Ronaldos wondergoal the highlights were the way the team performed with Anderson, Berbatov, Rio all adding to the team. Evra and Carrick are woeful at the moment so if they can turn their game around we will improve further. I'm sorry to say I think the performances of Scholes, Neville and Giggs about 4 weeks ago has deserted them and they are ready for putting out to pasture. Ronaldo picked himself up and his work rate did improve and if it was because of SAF well he should have done it some time ago. Rooney is fantastic. We need Hargreaves back ASAP and Rafael,if he is fit should be at least coming off the bench to get more experience.

I make no bones, FC Porto is #1 and ManU is #1a. I had mixed feelings about the match but I wish some of these ManU fans would give Porto more credit. This is a quality side on a limited budget ... they don't have the riches of ManU or the big EPL clubs. The final match was controlled by ManU but FC Porto had some chances. I'm a bit taken by the ignorane of some fans. Look at FC Porto fine tradition and history over the past 20 years (2 time CL champs, 2 time WW champs, and 1 EUFA Cup. This is a quality side that deserves some credit. I'm be rooting for ManU to go all the way.

Quite frankly a "quintuple" is so unlikely, simply because we have never risen to the heights this season as we did last season. To me a domestic treble and/or playing in every game available this season are more attainable goals.
What worries me more are two things; the truly "creative" midfield spark once Giggs and Scholes retire, and the disjointed play up front as opposed to last season.
Last season we essentially played a 4-6-0 with marauding midfielders and swamped defenses. This season, defenders have had a chance to reset against the ponderous Berbatov (can you recall him winning ONE game for us?).
To me, Liverpool took a leaf out of our book and just basically hoof the ball upfield for Torres to chase. Why not get Ronaldo to do the same?
If Hargreaves returns, we will have our Mascherano/Essien, but who is our Fabregas, a player who pulls the strings. One of those and we'd be untouchable.
Any suggestions? (Riquelme would be too old, right?)

I was really happy with the way united played. We have been going through a rough patch of late, but i knew that having ferdinand back was always going to be the solution to the defensive problems. I was pumped to c that Anderson was in the starting line up. He is a great player and was full of energy. He can attack and also deffend with alot of speed. Overall i was happy with the win. What concerns me most is that rooney and berba r not scoring alot of goals. ronaldo and vidic scored last time around against Inter. I just wonder how long we can coast on not geting goals from the fowards. With Ferdiand back,Wes Brown almost fit,the option of playing Anderson, and Ronald in devistating form i have a good feeling about the FA Cup,Champions League, and Premier League

I believe that Rooney is the player that inspires everyone. His dedication to the game and his team is impressive. This is exactly the kind of player who'll make it to become the next United legend. Humble, hardworking and inspiring... Just look at our beloved Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes-- None of them share the same glamour as David Beckham or Ronaldo, but certainly they place the team way above themselves. Worthy role models indeed!

Man United are definately back on form and I fully agree with my Friend payne on this. We just need to hold our spirits high and our motto should always be "Better you best" and Itell you, the history of 1999 is gonna repeat itself.

Man United look stronger and had good chances of making more goal. But a better team won at the end

Glad about the result. Impossible to not wonder how solid the team would be with Hargreaves cleaning up behind carrick and scholes. Carrick would be a killer in offence but preoccupied with tracking back that owen would do so well.

Yes .... now if we could only play like this in 7 remaining PL games :)
And, with the fixture pile-up, somehow manage to get through this week .... !

Those who still doubt if man-u will retain the champions league got their answer when man-u beat
porto. It was not just beating but showing the world what man-u can do when bussnes is meant.
Rio ferdnard was my man of match, he scored 100%.
maning the deffence and sealing all avenues was key to the succes.
Everton is next in the pipeline go man-u go there
is no room for turning back.

hi mark...i was so tense coz one goal wasnt enough for utd,,,,coz if they ill have scored a last minute gasp ....then all hell would have been brocken ,,mmh it reminded me of porto with mourihno....that was the case coz of away goals...otherwise thank you very much man utd for doing us proud again...so gogo for arsenal once again and show the mighty we have!

I was very pleased with Anderson's performance, and the steel and muscle he introduced to the team was evidence of what we have been desperately needing for the past few games. Scholes and Carrick seemed too focused on attacking over the previous matches, leaving the defence constantly exposed to waves and waves of opposition onslaught. We need an anchorman to shield our defence ( especially the weakened one we fielded previously ), and Anderson proved that he might just have what it takes. Hargreaves is going to have a challenge.

I hope the team keeps their feet grounded and concentrates on the task ahead. We have 2 semi-finals in England & Europe which we can easily win if we concentrate. The rest of the campaign should be steady if we do not make the same mistakes that were made over the past couple of weeks. I want MU to win it all this year because they have the chance to do so. God bless Sir Alex for he is the reason the team is so good when they need to be, they can match Liverpool's tally of 18 league titles and if they go back to back in Europe, there is a real possibility of winning in Madrid next year to match Liverpool's tally of 5 European Cups. I really believe we can do it.

its not a great game for me....coz porto got chances simply they didnt finish...thats only differences...still im thinking y man.united couldnt got a control of game especially end of game as they all r experience players...if u look at barcelona when they r front, specially when end of game they control very well...i like man.united do the same thing...for me man of the match was anderson.

I was extremely pleased with our performance. It was very composed. We were always in control, even when Porto were attacking. That early goal really brought back the swagger of champions. We played as if the competition was ours with all others just visiting. My man of the match has got to be Wayne Rooney. His selfless displays for a forward really helped as John O'shea at times looked flaky. Wazza protected him and at time that gave him confidence to push forward. The rest certainly did us well. Remember we have played more games than any other team in the world right now so we are tired mentally and physically but we will pull through. I'd love to see us win the CL and the prem with the FA cup being a bonus but if we don't win another trophy for the season, we can still be proud. It will be a dark day wheb SAF finally gives it up. Sigh. Either way, United for ever.

Hello Mark,
Reporting from the Windy City of Chicago where Red Devil jersey's are outnumbering the Blues 2-1 at our favorite pub "The Globe." Hats off to the entire team with notable mention to Anderson and Rio for their superb performances against Porto.
But the best laugh was saved when the commentator said "Cristiano Ronaldo just launched a Howitzer into the net.." It was priceless as 200 fans laughed in harmony!
God Bless Man U!!!

with Fedinand back,am not worried. A caution to Sir Alex, make our dear captain feel confident or retire when we still like him as OLe did. Otherwise big ups for Anderson,Macheda,Rafael, Evans,Welbeck,Nani,Fabio....You hold the fucture key.

Its time SAF swallowed his pride en stopped fielding those players who cant deliver especially English(domestic)ones.Beats me to see the likes of Gary,Oshea,Carrick,Fletcher on the pitch when characters like Raphael,Anderson, the three lunged Park are nowhere near the bench.I think SAF is trying to impress a few(his henchmen)at the expense of the club and Man U fraternity. Please SIR,the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
