It's that time of year again, the silly season when the January transfer window opens and clubs wait until the last five minutes of the final hour before deciding that they need to sign a crucial player who is either stuck somewhere on the M1 or reportedly just landed at a regional airport.
Those of you who are regular readers may remember my tales of Sergio Billy Bob Costa-Rodriguez-Chevalier-Smyth who has been tearing it up recently for FC Athletico Sporting La Bayer VFL Wanderers SV; and really the quality of rumour quite often lowers itself to that level, but let's take a look at the players who have been recently linked with City.
Roma's box-to-box midfielder Daniele De Rossi continues to be linked with both City and United, a connection that on the face of it makes little sense even though manager Roberto Mancini has been quoted praising the player. The obvious inference would be that De Rossi would replace Gareth Barry, but De Rossi is more a like for like replacement for Yaya Toure than Barry who plays more of a stay at home midfielder in the current City setup. Do keep in mind however that De Rossi's contract expires in the summer and the lack of a transfer fee, or a greatly reduced one in these times of UEFA Status Quo rules will encourage teams to make a move.
Belgian international Eden Hazard is another favourite of the press at the moment. Once more this doesn't pass the smell test. With Silva easily the player of the year and Nasri in the squad there is nowhere for Hazard to play. Chelsea or Arsenal seem much more likely a location should the attacking midfielder leave Lille.
Closer to home, Robin van Persie keeps being linked with the club? Why? That the dutchman is a great scorer is a given, but who do you sit? Aguero, Balotelli or Dzeko, the latter of whom has played the least and yet appears to have a good understanding with Silva and Aguero when he plays. It doesn't make any sense. City can't start 20 players each game and even if City did make such a move all it would do is guarantee that a youngster like John Guidetti, who is currently scoring freely on loan at Feyenoord, will move on rather than waiting for his opportunity.
I understand that the business of newspapers is to sell newspapers, but still that quality of the transfer rumours is pretty ridiculous.
The problem, I suspect, is that defenders just aren't sexy when it comes to generating news. But it's a defender that City need if they are to make a move in the January transfer window. With the Toure brothers heading off to the African Cup of Nations and Stefan Savic reportedly a loan target of Sporting Lisbon, City would be somewhat thin at the back should anything happen to Vincent Kompany or Joleon Lescott.
Which brings us to the current rumours concerning defenders that City are looking at in the transfer window. That would be none, as in zip and nada. The rumour mill is unerringly silent. Which means the chances are pretty good that City are unlikely to make any kind of a splash this month.

I hope Mancini keeps his cool and DOES not buy a a 4th striker. John Guidetti is doing ever so well on loan and I hope Mancini buying him back from Twente and offering him 3 year contract means he can play in first team. With rumours flying around that Arsenal are after him makes me a little worried >_
Time will tell.

Ji was frigging off side, that is the biggest joke.
We were once again fleeced and cheated by the match officials incompetence and unqualified idiocy.
But still we were totally crap in the final third without Silva playing.
Wallace Reply Yeah the linesman was out of position.

How did we lose to Sunderland?
Wallace Reply Wrong team selection by Mancini. Hard to complain when you are top of the league, but that's the bottom line.

While we're on the topic of defenders, why isn't City making a move for either Chielini of Juve or Cahill of Bolton? They could even make a move for Jagielka, Distin, (or similar) from Everton. I really get irritated with City giving up cheap goals due to mental lapses. An injury or two to the back four will cost City the title.
Wallace Reply I think I'm in the minority in that I've never been that impressed with Cahill. Jagielka on the other hand would also make Lescott better if they had to play together...

if city want cahill then they will probably get him for 20 million, since they always overpay when buying new players. They should try and put those scouts to work and find a good, reliable defender that can adjust to the english game and isn't going to cost them a fortune, maybe davide astori or gastaldello (at serie B currently)

In what way were mancini's team selections wrong wallace? I dont understand. I thought they were alright. Dzeko played poorly and so did a couple of others but I thought the team selection made perfect sense bearing in mind liverpool in 48 hours. With that team, we had more than enough to beat sunderland. We were just awfully unlucky.
Wallace Reply Stay tuned... I'm writing about that even as we speak...

City Fans:
Complain all you want but the City truck is stuck-The signs of a team not able to handle the top are there for all to see and having the deepest, most expensive (and with little to no injuries all season) squad is not enough when one is afraid to win. With 11 games in 35 days and a couple of players going to Africa there is a lot to be worried about-no goals scored in 2 and a half games and Liverpool with the tightest defense next the leagues most hated team is about to implode and even Chelsea will look like a happy place next to the declining blue moon come February. Tomorrow may be your last sniff at first place so enjoy it while you can. Jiiiiiiii

I agreed that we need another central defender and I am also not a huge fan of Cahill, so I was wondering who you thought would be a good central defender? Do we need an immediate starter or someone who will push the likes of Lescott and Kolo Toure? I believe we have that in Savic, but it does not seem at this point that he is a world class defender in the making.
Wallace Reply I'd like to see Giorgio Chiellini if City were looking for a major upgrade. As you say, I think Savic is a good long term investment that will pay off well in the future.

Hey Wallace,
Any chance we see Kaka at Man City? If not, where do you think he will end up?
Wallace Reply Would you play Kaka ahead of Silva? I wouldn't. I think Kaka goes back to Italy.

Kaka could be a summer signing for United if Anderson doesnt show his worth this season, he was looking promising before injury...but united the only premier league side that might go for Kaka..
Wallace Reply I still think that Brazilians are a liability in the Premier League and not worth the risk.

Chiellini would be fantastic, but probably unrealistic. A CB pairing with Kompany is a must as we lack quality along him anyway, but African Nations puts an even bigger microscope on the problem. Either one of Dortmunds CBs would work great for us. Thiago Silva?

Wallace,
yeah defense seems to be one place where the money hasnt been splurged...maybe a veteran defender on loan would do the trick??
Wallace Reply That's a thought. The general message out of City does seem to be that they large spending is on hold because of the UEFA rules.

I think another striker would be needed in Man City squad and a top quality one as i belive that Desko is not that reliable as he was in germany.Look at the amount of goals he scored and that was 4 in Spurs match and 2 in Manchester derby. He is not really your go-to guy, rather similar to Berbatov since that big money move to Manchester United;similar situation for Desko.
Someone in the mould of RVP or maybe Higuan or Benezema if they are allowed to leave.
Wallace Reply Balotelli has received the majority of the starts so it's not surprising that Dzeko has not scored recently. His early season work with Aguero and Silva was top notch and making sure that the three strikers all get enough work is Mancini's biggest selection challenge.

I understand the general point of this article but I am not sure I agree with you. On De Rossi I believe Mancini would sign him in a second if given the chance. Not sure if you follow the Serie A but he has been playing in a much deeper roll than in previous season and would be considered a holding midfielder at the moment, in fact he has been popping up in centre half as well and playing very well there also.
Hazard would be an improvement and despite having depth in attacking talent City still struggle to break teams down when Silva is absent. Hazard is quality, an improvement on both Johnson and Nasri in my opinion but it is doubtful whether they would look to sign him.
A centre half and striker are in the picture for me. Dzeko has been unconvincing. I like Cavani for city and to be honest I think someone like Collicinni from Newcastle would be ideal too. He is good on the ball, reads play well and can start attacks with his passing.

Hey Wallace, what do you think of Matts Hummels, I think he would fit in well next to Kompany
Wallace Reply Not sure yet. I've been watching the Bundesliga more this year to get a better sense of what might be available because my suspicion is that the German League offers the best value for money at the moment.

City seem to think that the only oponent is United. Wrong!!!. There are 20 teams in the EPL and they all want to win.S/land just showed that. That is the reality guyz.

You're right, any top flight club needs consistency at the CB position and buying players is one way to achieve this. However, I would contend that there are only a handful of players in the world and maybe 1-3 in the premier league who are a notable step up from the current starting pair of Lescott and Kompany. Investing for the future while allowing these two and Savic to work with Joey Hart is the best path forward for City right now.

Wallace... What do you think about a Pato for Tevez swap? I understand the argument for not buying another striker because of our youngsters elsewhere, but lets face it, if Tevez hadn't have done what he did he would be a regular in the lineup and we would have 4 strikers. I think a swap would be amazing. We get quality back and dont have to spend money. Tevez may even be valued higher than Pato....
Wallace Reply Brilliant player, but Brazilian. And until I see a lot more from Brazilians in the Premier League I think City should stay away from them regardless of their quality. Brazilians seem to flourish much better in Spain and Italy.
