It would appear that Noel Gallagher and Serge Pizzorno knew what they were doing when they celebrated drawing out their favourite teams against each other in the FA Cup 3rd round draw. What a cracking game. It's a cliche to call it a "proper cup tie," but I'll go ahead and do just that. End to end action, Leicester giving a good account of themselves and City showing the occasional flash of class that led to both goals.
City started out in a 4-4-2 formation. I've seen it described elsewhere as a 4-2-4, but I disagree with that identification. Hart was in goal in somewhat of a surprise. It would have been the perfect opportunity to give Given a run out in the team. The back four of Boateng, Toure, Lescott and Kolarov is strong enough except that I think Mancini rather out thought himself.
Because rather than de Jong or anyone else playing the base of the diamond sitting in front of the back four, Mancini went with Vieira and Milner as a central midfield combination. Adam Johnson and SWP completed the midfield out on the flanks. Up front City had Jo and Tevez working together.
My immediate reaction to this line up was a Leicester win. Quite simply put City do not have the quality of central defender required to play a back four straight up. And as good as Kompany has been this year, I include the Belgian in that statement. Now if Kompany isn't playing and Kolo Toure and Lescott are in the centre of defense this is even more true. Hence my multiple comments that City still need to buy a world class central defender.
You solve this issue by limiting the opportunities of the opposition in the ways that they can attack. Playing either a 4-2-3-1 or a diamond usually clogs the middle forcing attacks down the flanks where the back tracking of forwards or wingers can help to limit the effectiveness of these attacks.
Throw in a slow footed central midfielder in the form of Patrick Vieira and calamity is assured.
One minute in and said trouble duly arrived as Leicester scored via debutant Sol Bamba. An Ivory Coast international who apparently caught Sven's eye during the Swede's management of their national team, Bamba would in fact cause City fits all day winning ball after ball in the penalty area. We'll see more aerial attacks against City if the Toure/Lescott combination is used again.
Meanwhile City were effectively playing with nine men as both SWP and Jo were having absolute stinkers. I don't believe we'll see either man ever again in a City shirt. Leicester were good value for their lead until a moment of James Milner class led to the England international scoring his first goal for the club. The Foxes still were the better team yet on the stroke of half time a clever Carlos Tevez back heal saw City take an undeserved lead at the break.
Smartly de Jong was brought on for SWP at the half and City moved to a 4-2-3-1 formation with Milner in the Silva role and Johnson and Jo out wide. This was the correct move in that it immediately solidified the midfield and allowed City to hit Leicester on the break. So of course Leicester scored!
Hart had a clanger. It happens. Andy King scored from the mistake and the Championship side went in search of a winner. Mancini had obviously seen enough of Jo and brought on Zabaleta to provide someone who would track back when needed.
Those substitutions helped City shut up shop and I'd expect a better team selection and a better result in 10 days or so when the tie is replayed at Eastlands. One thing Mancini will discover with experience. You don't win the FA Cup playing weakened sides. That may be possible with the League Cup, but the FA Cup remains special. Clubs can, and do, play out of all proportion to their league position and the relative skill of the players involved.
Edin Dzeko is a great start to the January transfer window. However if City have any pretensions about challenging for the Premier League title or winning the FA Cup then a central defender must be brought in this month.

The one thing I took away from the last two City performances is just how important David Silva is to the team. I think he is fast becoming or already is our most influential player. The team just doesn't function correctly without him or De Jong in the side.
Who is the most important player for City in your opinion? And any word on the health status of Silva and Balotelli?
Wallace Reply yes, after a slow start coming back from the World Cup Silva has become incredibly important. Was interesting to see Milner in his role the second half against Leicester and will be curious to see if that will work.
Regarding de Jong, what we haven't seen is Small Berries trying that role and that would solve all kinds of issues.
No word that I've seen on either player's injury.

Hey Wallace, great post as always (keep 'em coming). My interest is piqued by your statement that trying Yaya in De Jong's role "would solve all kinds of issues." Care to elaborate?
Wallace Reply City need someone who can take de Jong's place when the Dutchman is injured or suspended. Toure should be given the opportunity to see if he is that player.

Wallace, I definitely agree with you about getting a central defender. Who do you think City could get to ultimately fulfill that position?
Wallace Reply Chiellini of Juventus...

I was glad to see Milner in the middle of the field where he is more effective. Mancini has had him out on the wing most of the times he has played. I would like to see Milner paired with De Jong as the 2 defensive MF'ers as I think he would be very effective at starting the counter attacks. Speaking of De Jong, do you think Tevez will ever pass him the ball inside the penalty area again?
Wallace Reply yeah de Jong really should have scored... A 4-2-3-1 with de Jong and Milner is an interesting formation to contemplate.

Wallace, do you believe Adam Johnson can become, in the near future, a formidable weapon on the flanks and create opportunities for Tevez and Dzeko. I believe he has the talent but I don't know if the mindset is there.
Wallace Reply This is the great question. City have bought a winger, yet Mancini doesn't like to play with them from what I've seen.

i would suggest (despite comments in pre-match interview)that Mancini isnt too focused on the FA Cup. Yes it would be great for the supporters to enjoy a successful afternoon at Wembley, but the real intention is CL football and making he finals of the europa comp. not a domestic trophy.
we need to keep the world class players in the side fresh to achieve these goals, not the FA cup regardless of its history.
absolutely require a central defender ...!
Wallace Reply Team selection and after game thoughts would seem to confirm this. CL and winning in Europe are the focus.

Wallace-
Just read your last three updates and the most notable thing is Mancini in all three. Manager of the month, have the team play above themselves this year, and learning a lesson from his mentor Sven. I thought the side was ambitious as well against an improving LCFC, but not the moves i thought he would make. I am becoming a Mancini fan and agree that this is quickly becoming a great not a good team with a mix of players that you have always talked about needing. A good run in January can see City comfortable in the Champions League!

What does the balotelli injury mean for us? will we see more aj, especially since we have dzeko there for him to cross to? or will aj remain a supersub (to be quite honest, a role i quite like him in. he can be very anonymous when given a full 90)
Wallace Reply My sense is the inter diamond gets played with AJ and Milner on the bench.

Wallace, you've mentioned a couple of times that City need a world class central defender.
Are there players out there that you are talking about in particular?
Wallace Poulter Other than Chiellini no at the moment. Lots of reputations, not a lot of substance.

Wallace, couldn't agree more about a central defender! I really haven't heard too much talk of this sort either in popular circles, the opinion is we have a world class defence already. Truth of the matter as you pointed out is that it doesn't work without De Jong in front of the back four, who would make me look like a world class defender. I would hold on to Kompany, to me he is better than Toure or Lescott.
Definitely a great cup tie to watch though, very entertaining.
Wallace Reply Yes I like Kompany and think he will partner well with a World Class defender.

I'm hoping that Michael Johnson's return from injury (successful I hope!) provides cover for Silva.
Wallace reply Different style of player.

from the leicester game,it looks like city will be playing a 4-4-2 formation with dzeko in the starting eleven.clearly this wont work out unless they get a good center back.what do you think is the best formation for city that accomodates tevez, dzeko and silva?
Wallace Reply There isn't. Which is why I believe Tevez leaves in the summer.

Hey Wallace, since Dzeko is coming into the starting XI, somebody's going to have to retreat to the bench. Who do you think it will be?
Wallace Reply In the short term the injury to balotelli might be a blessing. Long term I see Tevez as odd man out

Hey Wallace, not particularly related to the Leicester match, but hoping for your analysis nonetheless. With Dzeko now in the squad, when will Mancini implement a 4-3-3 with midfielders who are attacking threats? Clearly Yaya has been an increasingly effective offensive threat, but Barry and De Jong are far from consistent threats in the front third. Unlike Barry, De Jong is a brilliant defensive midfielder and I don't challenge his place in the central midfield as such. However, could we see Milner or Johnson more on a midfield wing in the 4-3-3 in the future in Barry's current position? What I mean is something similar to a defensive four with Milner, De Jong, and Yaya in midfield and Silva and Tevez supporting Dzeko in the front. In my opinion, this would give City three midfielders who can play defense well, and two of whom are equally gifted at running at defenders, assisting, and scoring goals. Thanks

Transfers. Watching Joleon Lescott play this weekend made me think he was the worse signing of the Mark Hughes era and clearly reconfirms your point of the need for a world class center back. Who do you think is the worse signing made by Mark Hughes? Santa Cruz, Lescott, Bridge, Adebayor? So hard to choose.
Is there any chance City actually go after a world class center back? Are there any others besides Chiellini? If not would we just buy a young, good defender (i.e. David Luiz)?
Wallace Reply Lescott is by far the worst signing because all the others made sense. City needed a decent Left Back and Bridge was decent. City overpaid terribly but you can't win without a solid defense.
Santa Cruz was a fine signing. No I haven't gone mad. An injury free RSC is a great player, but Hughes got him from Bayern Munich on the cheap specifically because he was always injured. City have more money than anyone so a risk like RSC is the kind of thing that you can do. City used their financial muscle in a similar way to get de Jong. At the time City were loudly derided for having paid a large sum when he could have been had for almost nothing in the following summer. But there was no guarantee that de Jong would have signed for City with the top Italian and other clubs in play. de Jong worked out, RSC didn't. These things happen, but it was a reasonable risk in the circumstances.
Adebayor is a confidence player. Brilliant when everything is going well, terrible when not.
But with Lescott, Hughes picked the wrong Everton defender.

Wallace, Mancini recently talked up Tottenham's Gareth Bale, saying he would be one of the most prized players to buy if ever put on the market. My question is, if Mancini ever decides to pull the trigger for Bale, would he really be that much of an upgrade over AJ? I actually like AJ better, as
hes more tricky and can provide more consistent end product while Bale is just a little too direct. There is no denying Bale's talent but if he's ever put on the market or decides to leave Tottenham I do not think Man City should try and get him.

Balotelli is clearly talented, but he needs to let his football do the talking, not his mouth.

Hi Wallace, I only just caught up on your posts and liked them as always. But right before that I read that Balotelli has describe Mancini as kilometres ahead of Mourinho. Is that just more of his big mouth or do you think theres actually a case to make that claim?
Wallace Reply Balotelli fell out with Mourinho so no surprise that such a comment would be made.

Not Related to the topic heading, but wanted an opinion on it.
Reading about the possible signing of dani alves which i like and would give city a very strong attack from the outside back positions in alves and kolarov. what was the point of buying boateng? Will they sell richards? seems like we would have too many highly priced players at the same position. similar to the midfield
Wallace Reply Boateng can play in the centre of defense as well and I'd like to see him partnered with Kompany.
