Which should seem obvious as a Man City fan. However as regular readers will recall in the past I have consistently suggested that United would win these contests because their team happened to match up well against City, particularly in midfield. Tonight should be different if City have the team and tactics in place that I suspect.
So what has changed? City have got better obviously, but in the past the United strengths happened to mirror the weaknesses of City. Paul Scholes in particular has bossed the midfield so many times. Quite simply playing a 4-2-3-1 against United gives too much of the overall control to United. The 3 in a 4-2-3-1 are spread across the field and allow the initiative to be lost.
Constantly we see harping by the press and opposing fans about City's three holding midfielders. Barry, de Jong and Yaya Toure are not holding midfielders; they are designed in an Inter Diamond to be a disruptive force that breaks up the opposition's midfield play, retains possession and then distributes the ball.
The Inter diamond then has a fourth component, at the top of the diamond, who is the creative force. It's the responsibility of this player, an Attacking Midfielder if you will, to connect the three midfielders, the two full backs operating as wing backs and the central striking pair. City have been forced to play only one striker early in the season due to injuries not only up front, but also at full back which is a crucial part of the equation. Further the fitness issue surrounding those returning from the World Cup meant that the creative part of the diamond was unavailable.
In David Silva City have that creative force and in Boateng and Kolarov the club also have the full backs who can play the supporting wing back role.
When operated correctly the midfield is overloaded with players any of whom other than de Jong can move into attack depending on the circumstances.
It's a shame that Balotelli will miss the game as a Tevez-Balotelli combination would have been useful and there was a chance that for the first time all year that City would have fielded what I believe is Mancini's preferred first team. Hart in Goal. Toure and Kompany in the centre of defense, Boateng and Kolarov as the full backs, de Jong, Barry, Yaya and Silva as the diamond with Tevez and Balotelli up front. Zabaleta may well continue at left back depending on the status of Kolarov.
If that team with Adebayor in place of Balotelli starts then City are my pick. If Milner and/or Johnson start - and I really like both players - then the formation is more of a Christmas tree and that will almost certainly not be as effective as the Inter diamond.
Football, winning football, is about how well you match up against the opponent. For the first time in a while City match up better in midfield than United. Doesn't mean City will win of course. However for the first time in a number of seasons it is a reasonable expectation rather than a hopeful one...

what happened to Adam Johnson (AJ) these days.. i think AJ AND DAVID SILVA HAVE To start right away to offensviue dimension.
and adebayo and tevez will defintley have to score. united is not as strong as people think. and city needs to expose this fact. united strulged aginst wolves , stioke city and they donmt seem to have a match maker anymore , the recent god form of NANI notwithstading.
i strognly beivle that city will win with a comfiortbale win.

United will surely win this derby because they are more organize and tactical in every part of the pitch unlike Man city were every player play like robot.Despite the absent of some key players in the united team, united will surely carry the day with 2-1 score line.

Wallace, I am a United fan that periodically reads your posts. Per usual, I have found your analysis to be pretty insightful. Thanks for the entertaining read.

Erm, if breaking up play, getting possession, and distributing the ball isn't what a holding midfielder does, what do they do? Just because Yaya is a bit flash at times doesn't mean he isn't a brute.
Wallace Reply The term Holding Midfielder has become intertwined with Defensive Midfielder and has been used to suggest that City are playing three such players. Not the case.

Honestly, I'm betting on Manchester City to win this game. Manchester united is a good and strong team to beat but don't forget, 80% of their key players are all out which makes the team struggle to maintain their original form.
On the other hand, Manchester City have more solid key players and I hope they don't screw up tonight because this is their chance to move on top of the Premier League Table

I believe Man Utd will carry the day though I would like to see the midfield battle between fletcher and yaya toure. I'm also yet to see a better passer of the ball than Scholsey on his day.

Why does Mancini prefer Milner over Adam Johnson? Milner is not even a natural winger. And Barry just slows down the passing speed(dwells on the ball for too long).
If we could play Milner in place of Barry and Silva where Milner plays(Left wing) and AJ on the Right wing wouldn't it make a better line-up? Time and again AJ has should that he is one of the best wingers.
The formation will be
--------Hart--------
Boateng-----K.toure---Kompany---Kolarov(when fully fit)
--Y.Toure--De Jong--Milner--
Johnson----------------Silva
----------Tevez---------
As Milner's preferred position is CM
Wallace Reply I disagree with not only Mancini's formation choice but also starting Milner over Johnson. Bellamy tormented Rafael last year and Johnson's pace should have been used for the same reason.

Mu def well , try to block every way of mc attack and trying hard to control midfield , they lack of attacking wit those many injury players but compare wit city , Mu got too much exp player and teamwork combined wit those young star.
Mc try to break Mu def and they lack of team work at mid, passing is not fully perfect plus Mu def force is not so easy to break if they on form .Mc def still need to improve ( example Arsenal and Chelase match ) if show that control mid and combined wit team work, even those Mu only use 1 attacking striker still make trouble to Mc.
If MU Fully squad winning percent will be 80%
If Mc fully squad winning percent will be 35%
So u guy both club supporte try to compare and calculate :)

Not to beat a dead horse but I can't figure out why Adam Johnson stays on the bench. In this particular match, the pairing of Johnson and Silva could have paid some dividends from a creativity standpoint. On a separate note, is City as currently configured a slow team? There were many counter attacks that were started which had to be held up due to lack of support. While a draw is better than a loss, I feel that this was a winnable match for us.
Wallace Reply If the Christmas Tree formation was to be used then Johnson should have started instead of Milner. Poor decision by Mancini. The 4-2-3-1 lends itself to fast counter attacking which was made Bellamy, Johnson, Tevez and Adebayor such a strong combination at the end of last year. Against United a 4-2-3-1 is not a good idea, but neither is the Christmas Tree. Given the formation and the personnel selected by Mancini this was a point gained rather than 3 points lost!

After the game, I must say, I am disapointed with City. Mancini was way to defensive. This was the chance to beat United, he will probably won't have another chance againts a weakened team like this.
City have improved, but if they really want to move to next level they must go on the atack at times like this. Adebayor was brought on on injury time for crying out loud. United was without Rooney, Valencia, Giggs, etc......

Mancini said that it was better to play for a point than risk losing all three..as happened last year. He also said that his players were tired. Manchester United were weakened by injuries to Rooney, Giggs and Valencia. Some of those who did play were recovering from the flu, and United also played at the weekend.
City had the same players available that they did against Chelsea, and yet Mancini chose to play a defensive counter attacking game.
What this says is that despite all the money he has spent on building this squad he doesn't believe they can beat even a sub-par Manchester United side.
Once again his use of substitutes was confounding. Johnson made sense..yet Kolorov for Boateng ? To win the game ? Adebayor for Tevez in injury time was not only an insult to the fans, but to Adebayor, a player who is scoring goals and could have won the game for City given more than a minute !
Mancini was content with a point at home from the outset, and for that decision alone, he needs to go.

Wallace, spot on as usual with your analysis. Would have loved to have seen Adebayor up front. I think we would have seen a different game if that was the formation Mancini went with. Oh well.

I am becoming very irritated by mancini and his tactics....

Posted by HonestJohn on 11/15/2010
In response to your response to my previous comment, and in light of recent results, I think it's fair to say that City DO employ three such players.

I enjoy your blogs Wallace, but I have to agree with Honest John regarding the negative tactics.
The home games against Man. Utd and Birmingham should be viewed as four points lost not two points gained.
Next up we have Fulham and Stoke away. Stoke have won their last two against Birmingham and Liverpool. Fulham lost a close game away at Chelsea and drew away at Newcastle.Of course Mark Hughes will be treating the game against City like a cup final ! With present team selections/formations City will be fortunate to get two points out of those games.
By the beginning of December, don't be surprised to find City slipping down the league table.

Mukul u have it bang on... drop Barry to the bench, put milner in the centre where he can screen the D and join in the attack, and have AJ and Silva on the flanks... Been thinking this is how we should look for a while now...

Wallace, this is completely off topic but thought of due to neymar saying he would play for juve article I just read. I thought part of the deal that lent robinho to santos was that we would have an edge on signing some of their young talent. Is there any truth to this?
Wallace Reply That was indeed the comment that was made at the time. I'm trying to get a clarification.

Wallace
i have just read the Alex Netherton article(ESPN soccernet) on Mancini not being the man for city. i'm behind mancini being at the helm, and at such an early stage believe he needs more time to demonstrate his capabilities....however i do think Netherton's comments on how Mancini is not able to develop close relationships has some validity. I also question how much improtance or discussion is had regarding the assimilation of players into manchester city as a club and manchester as somewhere to call home for the life of their contract and beyond. i would suggest if a player is not a great cultural fit we will never see the best of his footballing talents.
from this perspective i think we were wrong to punt Bellamy from the squad.
thoughts ...?
