That sound you heard from Milan was Jose Mourinho's come and get me plea. That the Special One is done with Italian football after this season seems about as certain as the sun rising in the morning, but where he goes could be very interesting.
Mourinho has stated that he wants to manage in Spain because no manager has ever won English, Italian and Spanish league titles and in England again because of his love for English football. Once those two have been accomplished then he'll end his career managing the Portuguese national side.

Speculation invariably revolves around City, Liverpool, United and to a lesser extent the return to Chelsea. Taking the latter first the question is quite simple. Does Roman Abramovich have the ability to admit publicly that he made a mistake in ousting Mourinho? If he can, and I doubt it, then Mourinho will be back at Chelsea.
It is said, although there's never an attribution you'll notice, that the job Mourinho truly wants is at United. I don't think anyone knows when Old Purple Nose is going to step down but I doubt it is in the next year or so. The problem for Mourinho is that if he ends up at Liverpool or City then that probably poisons the well forever in taking the United job; which is all the more reason for City fans to want the Inter manager to end up at City or Liverpool. Mourinho at United is a nightmare thought.
Liverpool in some ways makes a huge amount of sense. It's a team with a couple of world class players and the need for an infusion of quality players. Mourinho likes to dabble in the transfer market and building Liverpool back would seem to fit his personality. The problem is money. Unless there is a buyout of the current Liverpool ownership or a significant financial investment then it's hard to project Mourinho taking the job.
Which leaves City. All the money he could want and interestingly a squad that lends itself naturally to the 4-3-3 of the early days at Chelsea. Would the board be ruthless enough to get rid of Mancini to make way for Mourinho?
That being said let me throw into the mix a crazy scenario. West Ham. Yes, West Ham. There have been reports the past couple of days of the new owners of the Hammers looking for significant middle eastern investment to buy the 50% of the club that they do not own. Imagine if you will a set of circumstances where a large amount of money is made available to a manager to build up West Ham.
This would allow Mourinho to be based in London, which according to reports I've seen is where he is comfortable. It would also allow him to spend three to four seasons building up a powerhouse before potentially departing for United when Ferguson finally retires. Crazy? Yes of course, but there are circumstances there that make it interesting.
In Spain Mourinho has really only two choices. Real Madrid or Barcelona. There's certainly a case for Madrid getting rid of Manuel Pellegrini and the thought of Mourinho going up against Barcelona and Pep Guardiola is one that intrigues.
My money says Mourinho doesn't come to City. Real Madrid would seem to make much more sense in the short term or something unusual as the Special One waits for United. And fairly obviously I'd love to proven wrong on this one.

Yup. Agree.. He'll probably end up at Real Madrid. Loaded, full of ego's waiting for an even bigger ego to put them in their place. Ronaldo will be thrilled to be managed by him after Sir Alex. The galactico culture suits monsier Mourinho anyway.
And yes, agree... I think he wants to end up at Man Utd, but not as Fergie's direct replacement.. he'd rather not put up with all the fuss about filling his shoes etc, and let some poor fella take the mickey on that one. Ultimately, I think he wants to make Abramovich (not Chelsea, which will be an innocent victim) regret ever letting him go by dominating the EPL with a hated rival... who better than Man Utd.

From what I have heard Ferguson will be given some kind of honorary position at United once he retires so I can't see Jose going there.
I agree with you that Liverpool wont do unless there is a substantial influx of funds and it would be a major surprise if Roman ate humble pie and wanted him back in at Chelsea.
So that leaves us and Real Madrid and even though Madrid would seem the obvious choice I have a feeling that he will end up at City on the proviso we have made the top 4.
So Mancini to stay if we finish 5th or 6th or Jose in if we finish 4th.
Is that as mad as it sounds?

I do not know if real madrid is a good choice because the one thing he dislikes more than italian football is a chairman or president that likes to interrupt.

I dont think he would come to City. I would love for city to and if it a situation of mancini getting the axe then so be it. Football is a business and a cut throat business at that. Though jose is the ONLY manager i would do that for because i really like what mancini brings to the table. If you can give him enough money, which we can, and to build us into the best team in the world he might come. i wont be holding my breath though. Would love an early christmas present with the appointment of jose at CITY. Real Madrid sounds like the likely destination. CTID

You seem to take it as inevitable that it's only a matter of time till he ends up at Man U, because ageing managers, no matter how great, have to be replaced eventually. With that in mid who's to say that he might not end up at Arsenal in a few years instead?
 |
Posted by Jay on 04/01/2010
Why does everyone think he is waiting for Ferguson to retire?? Mourinho takes on special projects ie winning the league title for chelsea after 50 years, trying to win the champions league with Inter after 45 years. At United, there is no special project. it would just be a continuation of Ferguson's work and I just think Mourinho is too big for that.
P.S. He is the coach of Inter, a club with more heritage, tradition and grandeur than United so why would he be waiting for the United job???

you had me until west ham
even thaksin shinawatra's stupidest, richest friend wouldn't touch them with a barge pole
personally I think grown men buying into the whole mourinho 'special one' routine is very sad indeed... unless they are chelsea fans, that is. the guy has a good record but he's been extremely canny in going to chelsea just after they had finished a strong second in the league, and reached the semi's of the champs league, when the owner was willing to bankroll anything he wanted. and then he joins an inter side that was utterly dominant in the domestic competitions, and a bit unlucky in europe.
I rate Guardiola and Capello far higher. Mourinho's record may edge out Mancini, but it's a lot closer than most Brits acknowledged. And Mancini comes without the downside... the overwhelming egotism and narcissism that often leaves a bad taste in the mouth. the press here love that he gives them copy, so they fuel the obsession. underneath it all lies a good manager. not a god.

I admire Mourinhou, but if he truly wants to build a legacy for himself he should go to a slightly lesser known Spanish football club in the Spanish LA LIGA and then rebuild the team, like VALENCIA.

Another quality blog post, Wallace. Please post more frequently, if your schedule allows.
I just have a hard time seeing Mourinho at MCFC, given the values and persona of our owner. Down the road, a Capello or Hiddink would be a much better match, I believe.
Your speculation about the West Ham job is really quite fascinating, and seems quite plausible to me, if Gollivan secure the desired investment.
I know this much - Mourinho, based on past performance, is not likely to provide the free-flowing style of attacking football that so many of our fans desire. I think Mancini has done an excellent job thus far under difficult circumstances, but if he is not retained, I wouldn't be at all upset if we hired O'Neill or Martin Jol, assuming that Wenger isn't available.

I think he should really challenge himself and take charge of Newcastle United. Manchester City has made it obvious that you can't throw around money in the transfer market and win championships, quality coaching is still a required element. If Jose takes them to the top of the football world then that will show his quality as a coach. With that said, given their recent relegation and owner/money issues, if he were to take Newcastle to the top then he will go down as the greatest coach ever!

He should make a SPECIAL return to England and totally dominate the EPL and then his boys at Chelsea jumps over to his new club. There is nothing more interesting than to see Abramovich´s reaction -- which predictably would spend more money to buy new better players to prove that money always triumps over talent.

MOurinho has done no better than Mancini did in Italy.Where he did well without finance was at Porto in the Champions League. At Chelsea he bought two great players for every position and played boring football without being able to use Robben,SWP,Duff, and any other wingers properly. For me he is overrated and if Roma win the Scudeto and he misses the Champions league he will be out even on 11m pounds per annum...I would hate him to come to City.
 |
Posted by chiuke on 04/01/2010
Morinho comes to Man City and this is why. He becomes the highest paid manager he gets just about any player he wants as long the player agrees to come to Man city. All this talk about loving english football is to say "I'm going to England next". He gets to show SAF that he is better though he isn't but would like to be known as the best he gets to show Abramovic he was wrong and it wont be Madrid because pellegrini wins the league and stays on.

Mourinho to Madrid may not be the perfect fit as it seems. Madrid are bred to win and they are expected to do so playing stylish, classy football. This is in direct contrast to the grit and grind and the win at all costs attitude that Mourinho instills in his teams. Mourinho to City is much more realistic. Poor Mancini. He just can't seem to get Mourinho off his back!!!
 |
Posted by Jwct7 on 04/01/2010
Why would United want a manager, even Mourinho, for only a few years. SAF has proved that longevity builds success. United are not baby sitters' for a National team job, they are much bigger than that.
 |
Posted by Zoo on 04/01/2010
My money is Mourinho goes to Real. They spent an absurd amount of money last summer, why not again this summer? Plus it's not like Pellegrini is really doing a great job. Bounced out of Champions league to Lyon, and 74 points even with Barca in La Liga; surely he had higher expectations.
Although Liverpool and Manchester City are likely candidates I would say Liverpool over ManC. If ManC clears Spurs and makes Champions next season I'm willing to bet they'd keep Mancini for a while.
He's not going to Chelsea. I don't think Mr. Roman has any intentions of apologizing, and even if he did I think he's content with Ancelotti.
Liverpool seems like a likely candidate (certainly more than ManU) but I don't really know the situation with Rafa enough to say. Maybe someone could enlighten me.
As for West Ham, I think it would be awesome if they got some foreign investment and bought Mourinho and shot West Ham up in the tables. It would sure be fun to watch.

Mourinho should go to Real Madrid because he would help the Los Blancos to win and defend the chmaps league trophy successfully in the next two season. After that, he can move to England and Man Utd to be precise.

Mourinho is a good coach no doubt, an excellent reader of the game.Man Utd exhibits a growth and development type of soccer, and with the Special one coming to manUtd, there is every tendency for the youth development soccer at Ol'trafford to die down. Rather expenses goes out to transfer market in search for the EXPENDABLES or BEST OF THE BEST...aside that, what new achievement does he want to get at Ol'trafford...TREBLE, LEAGUE, CHAMP LEAGUE, name it...SIR ALEX has gotten it all...I strongly feel real madrid or liverpool will be aight.
on the other hand, a return to chelsea will be good provided on his return chelsea returns to the same form he built in past years.
...But if HE is really special, then he should build and win with clubs like westham, or valencia, just d way he won with PORTO.

Mourinho doesn't actually know how to build a team, he knows how to manage one quite well though. The Chelsea team was built before him, largely by Ranieri, and the Inter squad by his predecessors including your Mancini. I think he'll go to Real as they need very little in the way of players, just better organization, and would suit his ego. I'm not sure he'd turn down Liverpool though he'd more likely join them if Benitez hadn't already blown all their millions on dozens of mediocre players (plus a few brilliant ones.)

The West Ham idea would be great fun to watch, but I cannot ever see that happening. With Newcastle moving back up again next year, that would be quite interesting, but just as is the case with pool, they would need to bring in some heavy investors. One thing to consider that is not outside the realm of possibility, if Pep steps down at Barca, as he has made some reference a bit ago, what is to stop him from gowing there? I think he would prefer Barca over Real anyway. Just a random thought. I do think he ultimately wants to take over at United, and wouldn't do anything to jeopardize that end goal. He should come to Spurs if 'Arry were to leave or get the sac, the Lane would welcome him to be sure, but now I sound like a loon. Good blog post.

Mourinho will go to Spain first to try and win the league. Real Madrid or even maybe a different spanish club instead of the top 2. Once he has won in england, italy and spain, he will come back to the Premier League. If he were to go right now, it would be Man City due to the funds available. Liverpool style of play would suit Mourinho very well as they are quite defensive. Hopefully by the time he finishes his stint in Spain, Liverpool would have enough money from different investors for Mourinho to build a strong team.

Wallace - great story - you are a man of thought and love for the game.
West Ham is probably where he'll go if the club gets Eastern backing. He could create a great legacy there, and then go to United. I know that he wants that job, and he wants to coach in Spain as well - as you said, he hasn't kept it a secret.
Mourinho to Real Madrid for two years at least. Ronaldo will play under The Special One, and will get great emotion from this, being coached by his countryman, then he will follow Mourinho to United, after Ferguson retires, in about 3 years. Ronaldo will be at his full strength, just after he wins the lot at Bernebeu. If not this - West Ham or Chelsea.
Great blog... awesome...

Here are the options based on most likely scenerio: (1) Real Madrid or (2) Man Citeh IF they finish top 4 this season. Mourinho will not go to a club that is not playing champions league no matter how much he is offered b/c frankly he's not too hungry for money. He needs to be in the spotlight and champions league is part of that equation. Liverpool will never happen. West Ham? You must be having a laugh!

wether you like it or not: MOURINHO IS A GOOD COACH. those of you who said that he was riding on the success of ranieri and mancini, forgot that ranieri with all the players and years could not win the league. if mourinho is a trumpet blower why then is he insisting on a media blackout to the italian press who cant just leave him alone. for the record mancini's first title was by default after stripping juve of their title, the 2nd was juve relegated and milan deducted 18 points, the 3rd juve newly promoted milan ageing squard. the current inter side how many mancini players are 1st team starters: eto'o, pandev, milito, sneider, mota, mariga etc.
so just shutup and give him some kudo's

I don't know why the media seem to think utd is a certainty. Mourinho's ethos goes against utd's. He is a short-term thinking coach with no history of encouraging youth development. Plus his brand of football will probably not be welcome at Old Trafford.
As for Madrid, can he handle being a puppet to Perez. His ego won't allow for it. Not to mention Madrid not only want to win but win in style. They fired Cappello despite winning the league.

I think he's end up in either City or Madrid. You maybe thinks that it's rude that if the boss of city to clear Mancini for Mourinho, but Mancini just declare that he want to manage Juventus instead of City.
Whereas for Madrid, my reason is the poor performance of Madrid in UEFA champion leauge, end up in first 16 wasn't the target for the Galactico's board, it would be reasonable to fire the current manager to let mourinho in.
Conclusion, Madrid or City

I see Ferguson staying at Man Utd. until the day he dies, and his last words will be, "Don't bring Mourinho here."
I would love to see him back at Chelsea, because he showed in the match with Inter that he's got our number, at least until the club rebuilds again in a year or two.
Real madrid would seem to make the most sense, especially given his expressed desire to win La Liga. I don't see the Barcelona job coming available anytime soon.

He won't go to Real Madrid, because his first job in Football was with FC Barcelona and that's that. If he does go to Spain, he'll wind up at Sevilla because their managerial situation is an absolute mess right now and they're already one of the top 5 or so in Spain. He won't go straight back to England.

Mourinho does not want to prove anything by building small clubs - he has already done that with Porto. He is the only personality big enough to follow Fergie - he is not intimidated by success - he took the Inter job after they have already won. My money is on Madrid for 2 seasons and then take Ronaldo back to Man U in 2012 or 2013. He is out to build his name and his legacy - he is not looking for a challenge - he is looking for a platform. Who better than Madrid and then Man U to provide him with that?

He clearly stated that he wants to manage Man Utd and Portugal at some point in his career. Sir Alex may not even retire in 5 years time and he clearly stated that managing the national team is his last job before retiring. Both are not viable options at the moment.
Barcelona, the footballing philosophy of Cruyff, to Rijkaard to Guardiaola doesn't really fits to Jose's style of football.
Liverpool, unless there is a billionaire funding the project, no way. This may hurt his chances for a job in Man Utd.
Man City, he will never go to Man Utd then.
Real Madrid, good short option, but he will never manage Barcelona (first place he got a job in football, as Sir Bobby Robson's translator)
He will most likely stay put for at least another year in Internazionale.

Honestly, I wouldn't bet against him going to City but i'm sure he knows as well as anyone that it would put a dent in his chances, to say the least, of ever coming to United.
Whether he would want to replicate what he did with Porto (Liverpool comes to mind) or what he accomplished with Chelsea over the years (Then it has to be City) only Jose Mourinho would know. Maybe he would want to do something totally different altogether. That's where teams like Manchester United, Arsenal and maybe even Real Madrid come in.
In my eyes, I'd start to write off the chances of him going to Arsenal and Manchester United in the near future because of obvious reasons. In fact, I see him going to Real Madrid next. Why? because it seems the most rational decision out of all. Here you have two ambitious entities and they would complement each other tremendously. However, you have to take into consideration that these are, at present, two separate ego-centric entities.

Many other coaches have won trophies just like JM,but he 'tags' himself the 'Special One'.....simply bcos he won CL with Porto 2004 and back to back EPL with Chelsea....the latter after 50yrs......but does that make one realy special?
I think AW has done tremendously special with ARSENAL over the years....little money spent and is always competing in the CL and EPL,just short of depths and he has not won since 2004.....with a young squad and he has done well....hopefully they may win something this season...
RM will not suit JM,and even Man C,bcos I think too that JM is afraid of failure...that would rubbish his self-acclaimed tag of Special One...so,he would not look towards the direction of 'lesser' clubs like WH or Newcastle...not even Valencia.....check all clubs he'd been attracted to...Porto,Chelsea, and now Inter...reputable clubsides in their respective countries...so, to me, nothing too special about JM!

Bleh Mourinho is wack. He is full of himself. As typical as it sounds, right now Barcelona hold all the cards, they play with humility, respect and honor. To who ever stated that Inter are a club taht is more prestigious than Manchester United. Ugh, the one thing I agree with Mourinho about is how wack Italian Football is. Serie A is the wackest of top flight European leagues. 1. La Liga 2. Barclay's 3. Bundesliga. Italy has wack teams, wack tactics, and disrespectful players. The 2006 World Cup was a disgrace. Italy undeserved champions. Italy now actually has a chance to be knocked out in the group stages, that is how poor they are now.

Mourinho wants to be remembered for League Titles and Champions League Trophies in different countries. IMHO he will go to RM stay for a couple of years, then go to Utd and stay longer before going to Portugal as national team coach. To win he needs to have the best pool of players available that he can organize and motivate. At RM and Utd he will have a huge pool of the best players. City wont be able to attract the very best players unless they are winning Prem Lge and getting into latter stages of Champions Lge. Fifa and Uefa rules changes will be brought in to clip City's wings and limit their huge finacial muscle.

Mancini has to do more significant signings, he needs a good squad that should also have a strong bench, he needs two great players for each positions, there must be a strong competition in the squad to every one play their their best, he needs to get players like diego forlan and some great strikers as well as defenders, this is the only way city can get to the top or else it will be the same more old story.

About
Wallace Poulter is an award winning video game producer, designer, industry consultant and writer. He has been a football fanatic since the day he moved in next door to Brian Clough. "Cloughie" being the acknowledged genius that he was promptly moved out and went to manage Derby. A serviceable senior school left-back in his youth, Poulter played one season of Sunday league football as a striker proving conclusively that he was a serviceable senior school left-back! Today Poulter remains involved with football as a licensed referee and most recently as a consultant on a Football MMO.
