Got a good observation from regular reader Martin in today's feedback and this seemed an excellent time to start an occasional Q&A feature.

Martin's Comment
I don't get it. You go INTO Chelsea and win 4-2, but cant beat stoke or hull? Its like when this team wants to play against the big boys they do, but don't care about the lower teams. This is why we wont get 4th place this year. There is no consistency at all. I guess the its a perfect place for the quote "Hard times mixed with good times is what city's all about." It just drives me crazy knowing how good we can be if we choose. And with the Jose coming to city stuff, we are headed to a place like QPR is in. 3 managers per season. We need to pick one and stick with him. Mancini has changed our side for the good, but needs time like all other managers. I wouldn't mind having Jose, but make up your mind city. Plus, I think he will go to Real Madrid instead. Hope not. CTID

There's an old boxing phrase that says 'Styles make fights' and this is the case with City. Against an attack minded Chelsea who were looking to win, City were able to take advantage of the great speed on the flanks to counter attack effectively. Look at the goals. Tevez all hustle after a hopeful clearance and Terry error. Bellamy runs half the length of the field on the break, Barry bursts in behind the defense with no cover to get a penalty, Bellamy scores on a 3 on 2 counter attack. Not one came from a set piece or incisive build up play.

Teams like Hull and Stoke don't attempt to play like Chelsea and in that case you need... wait for it... wait for it.... a play maker (lol) to help unlock the opposition. Someone like Joe Cole for example who is out of contract and could sign a pre contract today. How Capello could over look him for the England squad is beyond me. Cole's pass to Lampard that unlocked the City defense for the first Chelsea goal is exactly the type of play that City have been missing since Elano...

Simples, City were robbed by the referee at Stoke and Stoke capitalised, then City beat Chelsea after Chelsea imploded because they did not like it when a strong City dictated play.

Good observations, Wallace. As I predicted a Chelsea stroll in this match, I can't say I saw this performance coming.

Landing Joe Cole would be sweet...

Agreed. Get Joe Cole. ASAP. Sign him, put his fitness back on track over the summer & come August, we shall witness him terrorizing defenses in the PL. An attacking quartet of Bellamy, Cole, Johnson & Tevez supported by the Barry-De Jong axis is a prospect worth salivating over.

To be honest, city were terrible...

Chelsea were even worse though!

Hey wallace,

The team looked very different with teves up front then ade. They just looked more confident and played more confident. Are we going to into Liverpool without torres if we dont have teves on the pitch? Hope not. CTID

I didn't see the match, only replays so I can't comment on it too much, but it seems that City lack the bite to take it to the "lesser" teams. City want that perfect pass, the perfect pitch to play on and overall perfect conditions before the put on a display. Teams like Stoke can take it too us and other then de Jong we lose our aggressiveness. I would have liked to see Tevez in those matches against Stoke as he brings that same bulldog element. Play the beautiful game against the top tier..play the gritty game against the lesser teams, it is what you have to do.

City play better when Tevez and Bellamy are leading the line like against Chelsea, it's no coincidence that the only other time they've played together away from home since Mancini came was at Wolves where they won 3-0. Ade or Santa Cruz don't do the trick away from home at all.

I would say that its a mental thing, the City players are "up for it" against the big teams, where their reputation is at stake, where they can give the finger to the opposition crowd, etc. Its glitzy, glamorous and why they joined the nouveau riche.

Playing some of the lesser teams just aint the same.

To comment on Danial Ariff's statement, you mentioned the quartet worth salivating over but where is Adebayor in all that? Have you written him off at this point? I'm an GUNNER fan and we were all exited to see him leave. What are your thoughts?

Trevor

Wallace Reply There are times when Adebayor is world class. I'm thinking of the Arsenal game against Spurs for example. I would have loved for Adebayor and Ali Benarbia to have been contemporaries. Could Benarbia have made passes that were ahead of Adebayor's runs (and kept him onside)... Long term it depends on what system is run. The Mancini diamond partnering with Tevez against Bolton was promising.

As for a playmaker, I am not a fan of Joe Cole and I would not be happy if City spent 100K a week on some one who just doesn't look motivated sometimes. He has skills, but he doesn't do it for me. We could use Ireland, but he gets to tricky sometimes. He is much better making runs from deep, but I feel he could be mentored into the playmaker kind of player we need. If we are going to go outside City, I would love to see Marek Hamsik, who Mancini loves, and would fit in with Tevez and Bellamy who chase down every ball. But as for Joe Cole, once he gets his money, he won't be motivated to play for club(Case and point, Robinho)

Wallace Reply Disagree with you on this one. I've always thought Cole a singular talent. I'm concerned he's going to end up in Trafford

why is does city need joe cole, adam johnson is beginning to prove that he was (except the liverpool performance) worth buying in the transfer period and at only 22 he has all the potential.

and does anyone else think that ireland should be out of the starting lineup. he has been dreadful, playing his "best position" and was subbed in two consecutive games with liverpool and the FA replay against stoke.

Maybe one possible answer is the Man City were a tad fortunate against Chelsea...

They scored some good goals on the break, but your overhyped defenders (especially Lescott and Richards) looked VERY vulnerable.
