I wonder if I am just contrary by nature. While the blogs this morning are full of anti Hughes rhetoric I find myself not particularly fussed by the loss to Spurs. It was thoroughly predictable and I don't mean that as some kind of attack on Hughes. Given that the entire left side of City's midfield and defense, Bellamy, Bridge and Lescott was out through injury and suspension and that Spurs are at their most dangerous attacking down their right flank I honestly couldn't see any other outcome regardless of the quality or effort put out by the players.
That the effort was lacking and it formed probably the worst overall performance by a Hughes team is in the grand scheme of things fairly unimportant.
As I noted, I would have played a different team with different tactics but there's no way to know if those would have worked. I was pretty positive that the most "obvious" team that could be put out would fail.
Let's put this in context. Even with a fully fit and available team getting anything from Tottenham would have been a stretch. Spurs are a very good side and it is not reasonable for us to expect the club to win every game. If we saw such results over a month and a corresponding lack of effort then there is a discussion to be had, but big picture it is just one loss.
The news concerning Lescott after the game was that the defender will miss a couple of months. Combine this with Toure leaving for the African Nations' Cup and it is fairly obvious that Hughes will have to buy and very quickly to bring in the necessary reinforcements. I do wonder if we will see him go once more to the Bundesliga where his ability to evaluate talent is quite impressive.
The argument for the Premier League signings was that the players knew the league and would not require the time to adapt. If this thinking remains the case then I would expect Matthew Upson's name to be mentioned prominently. A month ago it looked like a quiet January for City, now it is quite possible that 4 new players will come into the squad. Three defenders and the midfield maestro are required to maintain City's quest for 6th place or higher in the league.
One player who will not be leaving is Joe Hart and I'm glad to see that Mark Hughes has ruled out the possibility of Hart leaving the club. Given the surprising struggles of United's Ben Foster, and I say surprising because I do rate the young keeper, Hart is looking more and more like the long term solution for the England #1 role after the World Cup. And at this point is probably ahead of Foster for the 3rd Goalkeeper spot in the South Africa squad. Shay Given is arguably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, certainly one of the top three and should be at the club for a number of years. However there is no reason why Hart cannot continue to be loaned out to clubs each year until the time that City need him to step into the top spot.

I thought Barry played poor against the Spurs. I haven’t been impressed by his form for a couple of weeks now. Something has to be addresses with the midfield.
To many times Adebayor drifts back to the midfield for the ball instead of up front waiting for a pass, or a setup for an early run. I thought the lineup was ok for Spurs but not the formation. Spurs just man handle City in the second half, and City could not get any going, till very late. Hughes was out coach.
Wallace Reply My point exactly. City don't have someone to pass the ball so Adebayor is coming back looking for it. There's this perception that Adebayor is playing poorly but as I see it the issue is a lack of service that he can run onto.

Why we would play a 4-3-3 with no wing protection for our fullbacks in beyond me. A 4-5-1 V-formation would have provided more protection against Spurs wing attacks and fit the available players that we had. I've been one of the few City fans that supports Hughes but its becoming harder and harder to justify when some of his decisions are so obviously wrong on face-value.
Also I completely agree that me need a creative midfielder. Barry has yet to have one good game for us (that i've seen) and has been a real disappointment. The few times I've seen him play for England he's looked very good but he looks lost for City, his passing is poor and he has missed some sitters. Its come to the point that I would argue that he doesn't deserve a starting spot.
Wallace, do you have any suggestions as to who you would like for a creative midfielder? Di Maria would be my choice of the top of my head but idk if we can get him.
Wallace Reply Totti but he'd never leave Roma, Juan Roman Riquelme is someone I've wanted to see for a couple of years and Bosnian Zvjezdan Misimović is rather useful but has had some moments with coaches. Given Hughes history at City so far I'm not sure that would be a good mix.

Spurs were the better team, no doubt about that. But I don't think City were QUITE as terrible as everyone says. They were at least trying to get something from the game, albeit unsuccessfully. They had a couple spells where they were passing the ball neatly, patiently trying to unlock the defense. I found this refreshing because they were adapting their play to better cope with the game.
A poor day at the office, but I sensed effort from the players, even though it amounted to nothing. Hopefully tough questions are being asked in the dressing room, and we're about to be treated to a pile-up of points.
And yes, there needs to be link-up play with Adebayor.

Wallace, I completely agreed with you before the game about squad selection and would have like to see Barry playing at the left back position, just to see if it worked. With the African players leaving and the window fast approaching I look to see at least 4 players come in. Also looking at the schedule the next stretch is the season we have 9 fixtures in a row (until feb. 20th against liverpool) in which I feel we are the outright superior squad. We have to come away with 25 points from these games maybe take a draw away at Everton, 21 points as a absolute minimum because following that stretch we will get Ade and Toure back and go into the Pool, Chelsea, Spurs run which will define the season. I think Hughes needs to try a different approach up top, maybe move Ireland in side or even Robinho, get Santa Cruz involved while Ade is away. I like the depth of the team but right now the pieces just are working that well together. We have won games on talent so far not on teamwork.

It seems to me we have bought a pig in a poke with Santa Cruz, he may have done O.K with Blackburn but he hasn't shown me anything with City. Why is it that we do well when we use short crisp passes until we get to the penalty area and then we decide to include Given in the play and we start all over again

The result against Spurs really hit home and I really do finally believe you have hit the nail squarely on the head when you stated that we are sorely lacking a midfield schemer to replace the void left by Elano. Right now I think Hughes should use his Hamburg connection and make a play for Germany schemer Piotr Trochowski, a creative MF who is not only a deadly passer but a tricky dribbler able to play through the middle and on either flank.
In the meantime City fans need to shelve the "Hughes out" mentality. A change of manager will not magically cure our ills and I can't think of one who'd be an actual upgrade and the notion that either Mourinho or Hiddink will come to City borders on sheer fantasy.
Our goals for the season our still very much in reach so right now we need positive attitudes not just on the pitch but on the terraces as well
Wallace Reply I'm a fan of a number of players at Hamburg as you shall see in the next update

what a shambles of a game against spurs! How long does it take Hughes to get some kind of a plan together. Players are showing no passion, which is a reflection on Hughes. The owners wont stand for these kind of results, I mean, 1 win in 10, thats worse than Liverpool, and we know what kind of season they are having. We have the players its up to the manager to get them playing! Some players will need to be brought in to shore up the defence though, but that was probably going to happen anyway. Lesser teams, who spent no money, are doing it. De Jong has to play as a defensive midfielder, when fit, and Robinho sold, who needs him, he wants out, let him go! Wallace, Is top 6 the goal for this season?? With Liverpool looking shakey, surely top 4 would be the aim? Can't see Hughes lasting if City finish 6th!!
Wallace Reply Although the press constantly go on about Hughes needing to get to the Champions league or lose his job the reality is that the Chairman came out and said 6th or better was the target. Absence Elano, or more specifically his passing skills, 6th is a reasonable goal.
