Two of the players who I've talked about more than most on these pages left the club earlier in the week. Dietmar Hamann was, along with Michael Johnson, the key to the fantastic start the club had under Sven and the failure of Mark Hughes to realize that remains one of my biggest complaints about the manager.
It spoke volumes to me that Nigel de Jong was such a vital signing last January, specifically to fill the Hamann role. Given the capture of the Dutch international it was inevitable that Hamann would leave. A class player and we wish him well.
And another we wish well is Darius Vassell. Seriously. Tireless worker, he gave everything for the club. My issue with Vassell was that he stopped being Premier League quality a couple of seasons ago. It also didn't help that he was played out of position on the wing. Vassell remains an instinctive striker. Put him in the penalty area with no opportunity to think, just react, and the man can still score. I loved the scenes of the former England international being mobbed by fans of Turkish club Ankaragucu when he arrived in Ankara.
The John Terry affair is a curious thing. If the reports are true, and for the moment let us accept that this is the case, then City made an offer for the Chelsea and England captain in the past week. Unlike other clubs, Real Madrid, United and Chelsea, come to mind, this was not made in the media or through leaks to third parties. In fact no one would be the wiser except that Chelsea made a public statement that they had turned down an offer. That doesn't make any sense.
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to publicize the fact that City made an offer. At least the only reason that comes to mind is you would so such a thing if the club was planning to sell the player but needed to create a public appearance of reluctance. Otherwise why? I also don't for a moment believe the wages that are being quoted in the press. Such a number would create unrest at the club.
I don't see Chelsea selling as this is, in my estimation, their last season with the current team before they have to invest significantly in bringing in more youth to the team. But at some point the numbers get high enough that even Chelsea must look at cashing in on a player who will be 29-years-old in the upcoming season and plays with a reckless style that should dictate more injuries as he gets older.
Elsewhere... It would be very easy to make fun of United at the moment. Having lost Ronaldo and apparently Tevez and being outbid, it would seem, on their other targets they have turned to a beaten up Michael Owen. How the mighty have fallen and all that. There's just one problem. I really like this move.
As gambles go, you have a not yet 30-year-old England international striker who is desperate to get back into Capello's plans for the summer and can partner with the first choice England striker when he plays. Moreover this also addresses the issue that United had with Rooney, Berbatov and Tevez. In the new look United side, Rooney and Berbatov start with Owen as an excellent sub, where his pace can be used to advantage.
Rooney and Berbatov will miss games through the occasional injury or suspension and Owen becomes an excellent third option. And a possible 4-3-3 would be very interesting. Throw in the opportunity to play with and learn the passing preferences of Carrick and Hargreaves and it makes sense from both the player and the club's perspective.
The question will be asked would Owen have been a good gamble for City? Yes, but he is in all candour a much better fit at United. It may all come to nothing, but I suspect Old Purple Nose has done well this time. Darn!

You're spot on about Owen. I also think it's a savvy move by Ferguson.
I'm not sure what to make of the Terry situation. Some sort of gamesmanship, I suspect. Why, I don't know.
I guess we'll find out over the course of what's left of "the silly season."

Nice one. Agree on Owen and especially Vassell. Blues forget very quickly the important goals he scored for the club, including the second v United in the Old Trafford victory in '08. He played in any position the manager asked. More attitudes like him around the place and City will go places.

Micheal Owen only needs every one's support to deliver.
He was always agood finisher befor those injuries, and given the strength United have in Midfield, less should be questioned about his capacity to win trophies.
For fans,we have to be patient and welcome the guy, after all we got him at "zero" cost.

To be very honest, the injuries suffered by Owen has really changed him. However he has loads of potential and if Ferguson starts with the legendary 4-3-3 Man U could have one of the best striking forces in the world, Berbatov, Rooney and Owen. It'll be very interesting to see THAT striking partnership

Hey there Amon. I think u might be misguided somewhere along the way. ManU once got the strength in midfield but a couple of weeks ago they lost it. Did u forget CR7 is no longer there. They really need to find a very good replacement and soon. Owen is a good striker but no supply no good right?

"where his [Owen's] pace can be used to advantage."
What pace? Have you been hiding under a rock for the past three years?

Rooney and Berbatov start with Owen as an excellent sub, where his pace can be used to advantage.
Err... have you seen Owen lately, his pace has not been very good.
That being said i still like the signing because what united need is not pace, it is someone with a cool head who will take the ball and put it in the net when presented a chance. So many times the younger players have had chances where the defence is in shambles but the player launches the shot into the back row of the stands. It was exactly the same situation at Real, where his Goal per minute on the field was fantastic.
That being said fingers crossed the gamble doesnt work, if owen retains his old form in think my blood pressure will finally cause my heart to give out.
(go liverpool!)

i think you got your ideas right, i would like to add that united once lost becks, ruud and heinze to madrid but on each occassion we got stronger. teams should learn not to depend on individual players. the signing of owen is a good one cos his patnering well with rooney this season will enhance his own and england's chances at the world cup. let spain spend the money, english teams will play the football.

Who cares about owen's pace? One thing only-he knows where the back of the net is! Goals are all he'll bring. Good move sir Alex! This is no gamble. Non-United fans are just upset that their own managers didn't think of that move first! Eat your heart out.

Dietmar Hamann a loss? The guy laughing in the dressing room after an 8-1 drubbing to relegated Middlesbrough? Get real, glad he is gone.

Smart move by Sir Alex, I was hoping Rafa would bring him back to end his career as an Anfield great despite leaving for Madrid ironically after which Liverpool won the Champs league.
But it's all good wish him the best, someone talked about Owen having lost pace? We are talking about Michael Owen here and not Owen Hargreaves, go figure!

Remember that Owen technically costs man u nothing and it is not even a gamble - united can never lose because they will pay him peanuts if owen doesn't play or score.
I get this feeling that when owen scores against liverpool this season it will be the first time in my life that I will applaud a united player scoring against liverpool. owen has been unlucky these past few years with injuries and he deserves this break.

I do not think the Rooney, Berbatov, Owen 4-3-3 would be a good fit. Owen surely is not as fast as he was a few years back and I do not think Berbatov even works up a sweat when he plays. Rooney is good enough to play on the wing but neither Berbatov nor Owen would fit in on the opposite wing. Owen will be more useful as a sub or playing off of Berbatov/Rooney. I do not think all three together on the field is the smartest play.
I think United get into trouble trying to force players to play out of position. As I said Rooney is good enough on the wing but he is better in the middle. They should think about investing some of Ronaldo's transfer money into another winger or some youth in the midfield.
all in all, what do i know. im just drinking a beer acting like i know what im talking about.

sir alex is a amart man. if he thinks owen will do good for the club then i will back him up. but 1 thing i havnt understood yet is y make a world class player like tevez go.that was a mistake

With the crazy prices in the transfer market, any average striker will cost Man united at least 10 million. With the signing of Owen, Man United has nothing to lose.
I think Alex Ferguson is adopting a wait and see for the first half of the season - his team is still good enough to register those 1-0 wins and stay in the championship race. Look at how he splashed 30 million on Berbatov on during January transfer window.
If the goals dont come, they will surely open their cheque books and sign a big name.

owen is prolific, watch out how he will be a hit in united shirt. the barrage of passes he will get will be much. am even tipping him for the golden boot award. guys just watch and see.

I agree dat if Michael Owen stay injury free, his Man Utd stint will be eventful.Don't forget that all he needs is good service from the middle and the wings and the goals will start pumping in for him.U all know that his partnership with Wayne Rooney is predatory with Dimitar Berbatov playing behind them....United will blow up the EPL next season.
