I'm feeling nostalgic today. Wimbledon fortnight is upon us, the favourite time of my late Mum. Classically she'd complain all year about the amount of football we'd watch on tv and then attempt in the space of two weeks to watch enough tennis to equal our football watching 50 other weeks of the year! My Mum also bought The Guardian every day without fail when it seemed to be at the height of its "Grauniad" reputation for typos.

So it was with almost a sense of comfort I was delighted to read in The Guardian that Carlos Tevez advisor Kia Joorabchian had spoken with an Argentinean Radio Station concerning the player's current contract and noted that "The contract with United officially runs to until June 31 and we'll respect that."

Elsewhere... The victory of the US against Spain may not be their greatest upset ever, that would be the 1-0 victory over England in the 1950 World Cup, but it's up there. Clint Dempsey improved greatly this year at Fulham, Everton keeper Tim Howard is a quality Premier League shot blocker and Landon Donovan has in this tournament finally shown the quality that led a number of us to predict great things for him a half a dozen years ago. However that's about it in terms of Premier League quality players. To beat one of the top two teams in the world was a staggering performance.

Donovan in particular is an enigma to me. Back in the Keegan days I would regularly comment on MciVta that Donovan should be pursued by the club. This was before players like Brian McBride showed conclusively that the best Americans could play in the top flight. Still kills me that we never snagged McBride, his ability in the air was ridiculously good. Donovan was an excellent attacking midfielder and yet struggled in two attempts to make it in Germany. Maybe it wasn't the correct atmosphere for him. I'll be curious to see if he stays in Los Angeles or if a European club takes one last gamble on him. The Donovan against Spain is the player we all thought he would be.

What was interesting was how poor Spain were in their passing and their movement. Xavi in particular was wasteful with his passing, trying to force passes rather than being patient and moving the ball side to side or opting for quick one touch passes. Casillas really should have comfortably parried Altidore's shot while Ramos gift to Dempsey was beyond generous.

Nothing about this US team impresses me. Indeed great commitment and passion combined with strong athleticism but beyond that they have little to offer beyond grafting. Reminiscent of the boring but effective Greece side of 2004.

Still to their credit, they had a game plan and executed it well. It was Spain's game to lose and did they ever. Poor focus and execution. Also proved that their defense (beyond Casillas) is quite suspect to speed ( particularly Puyol) and brawn while Ramos remains hugely inconsistent. Casillas better than Given, maybe, but Given is better suited to the EPL, so hopefully no more Iker to City rumors.
