Javier Saviola, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Gabriel Heinze and Rafael van der Vaart have something in common other than that they all play at Real Madrid. They have all been recently been mentioned as surplus to requirements as Galactico: The Next Generation (henceforth known as GTNG) begins to take shape.
In the past I've spoken about how, as the club builds itself into one that can challenge for the Champions league, City should take advantage of situations that occur at other clubs. Kompany had a falling out with Jol, de Jong had a cheap release clause in the summer, Bridge and SVP were back ups at Chelsea and most infamously Robinho had fallen out with management at Real.
Here is another opportunity for City to bring in quality talent as we build a squad to rival anyone in the Premier League. Are they the big target man and central defender that City need; alas no. But each one of the five players is a high quality talent.
Now this isn't Fantasy Football or Football Manager. You can't build a team with all superstars. I keep alluding to United's squad, but the reason I do is it is a finely tuned squad with a standard first team, obvious replacements and a good blend of older veterans and youngsters. The second string understand their place within the squad and when they will be called upon to contribute. It's why the Tevez and Berbatov acquisitions never made sense. One of them had to sit on the bench and that doesn't work. Top class players want to play every week (See: Elano)
Once we understand City's formation preferences for next season it will then possible to start to see how the squad will be constructed. This also explains Hughes building from within the Premier League in that he understands which players can work in a complimentary basis to each other.
All indications are that City will bring in three more significant players during this off season. We also have an excellent academy stream that should be given opportunities. City are close, a lot closer than fans of most other teams realize. It will still take a lot of work to emulate the squad composition and strength to rival United. Two to three years I believe. Which is why the target of top 6 next year makes sense. It's a building block.

Manchester city should sack out their manager Mark Hughes. So they should sign new manager.Other than that,Manchester city should buy Teves to partner with Robinho. Then sell Richard Dunne and bring Kolou Toure to Manchester to replace him. The important things is,sign new golkeeper to replace Shay Given. He is not play well.City should try to sign Real Madrid's golkeeper Jerzy Dudek.Bring him back to premier league. So that all my comment for Manchester City.I'm the Fan of Manchester City

Isn't it interesting that Blatter blasted ManCity's attempts to sign Kaka in January, saying such huge transfers would ruin football, but now that Ronaldo's gone to Real Madrid for less Blatter praises the deal as a sign that the transfer market remains healthy in the face of the dour world economy? Laughable. What he really meant, I'm convinced, was ManCity doesn't "deserve" world-class players such as Kaka and Robinho, because he views City as a second-tier club.
Of course, for all the blather from Blatter and others, ManCity will still have to earn its respect the time-honored way: on the pitch, and in the standings.
You are dead-on with your assessment on how City should build. This is new territory for Hughes the manager; we'll see if he's able to handle it. He needs to grow with the challenge, but I believe he's capable of doing that.

I don't think money can buy you glory in football. YOu can spend big and win 1 or 2 trophies, but will not establish yourself as a big team over the long periode. I see Chelsea players are getting older and the team needs to spend big again to stay a contender. I like the Arsenal Model and Once They got confortable with their debt and start spending reasonnably, they will start winning trophy again. City should buy smart to mount a good challenge to the big 4. Barry is a good add on although why they spent the big cash on de jong in January Does this look like there is no plan, they just want to spend

Muhammad, I know you are a city fan, but dude you make no sense at all. Shay Given replaced by Dudek? Are you crazy? Shay was great for us this year. I am from Poland and a big fan of Dudek, but man are you ever wrong. Shay was great. Dont change him at all. I agree with you on the other signings, but all in due time. One signing at a time. We need to improve one position at a time. Tevez, absolutely. Toure, yes. But not Dudek. He doesnt even start for Poland anymore. He isnt on their roster even. As Wallace said, take advantage of other clubs mistakes. Bring in Schneider. I am a huge fan of his. Brilliant player. Dont know if he would come though to be honest. Another centerback and we should be good to go. CTID
