I only got to see the first half of the England game, but the difference in the two games for right back Glen Johnson was rather interesting. On that performance you can see why clubs are sniffing around him. I'd be curious to see what would happen if, rather than playing at full back, a team tried him as a right winger or right midfielder.

Been thinking about the England squad and have to say that I think it's bad news for a couple of City boys unless injuries occur.

The squad is 23 players of which 3 are goalkeepers. That's James, Green and Foster with Hart and Robinson looking in from the outside. The team plays a rough 4-4-2 so you need a starter and back up at each position.

On defense that gives you Cole, Terry, Ferdinand and Johnson with a back up of Bridge, Upson, Lescott and Brown. No room for Micah Richards.

In midfield you have Gerrard, Barry, Lampard and Walcott with J. Cole, Hargreaves, Carrick and Beckham as the back ups. Yes I think Beckham makes the trip, there's no one else on the team that has his dead ball skills.

Up front two strikers and two back ups gives you Heskey, Rooney, Defoe and Crouch. That gives you 23 players. I trust that the team will not make the mistake of sending too few strikers as in the last World Cup so I would suggest that defense, midfield and attack each attempt to get one more player. In attack a fit Dean Ashton might get the call or Carlton Cole. The Villa trio of Milner, Young and Agbonlahor would all seem to be in with a shout. Young and Agbonlahor in particular give pace options off the bench out side and also up front as support strikers and it is this versatility that I fear may doom SWP.

Lescott provides cover both in the middle of defense and at left back and the only argument for the inclusion of Richards would be if he completely regained his form and could play both central defender and right back if needed. Or does Jagielka come back stronger after his injury and snag the last place on defense. The inclusion of Hargreaves would allow Brown to be dropped for example.

Are the last three competing for a spot Richards, Young and Agbonlahor or Richards, Milner and Ashton/C. Cole? Then that's your squad with everyone else on the outside looking in.

It's a year before the World Cup and yet it seems to me that Richards and SWP are fighting for the last remaining place in the squad.
