Liverpool were very unlucky on Saturday but we need to do a better job of taking the chances that are given to us if we want to climb the table. United had two chances to score, a Phil Jones header and the goal by the Little Pea or whatever nickname that fella has. In typical United fashion they scored from one of those two chances to steal a point at Anfield.

Liverpool on the other hand created many clear chances to score despite having a pretty quiet first half. A dangerous short corner that no one got on the end of, along with a glorious chance created by an Adam shot which fell directly to Suarez, were our two best chances to score before the break. Suarez did well to get the shot off but he hit it straight at the keeper. I fancied the little man from Uruguay to score when the ball fell to him but it was a sign of things to come from United keeper De Gea.

Liverpool continued to dominate the early exchanges of possession, which was to be expected considering how United lined up. They went with 4-5-1 to park the bus in front of their goal and to their credit they did a good job at stifling us. Suarez was the danger man and after he lost the first few balls he received he was very good throughout the 90 minutes. He is a joy to watch with how he moves in such tight spaces. United had to resort to fouling him in order to stop the striker.

Once the half time break came I felt we needed to go for it a bit more and we did. I thought we dominated the entire second half, except the period right after we scored until they scored. Our goal was created after a nice run by Adam who I thought had his best game for us. I have said often that he fits in well in a 3 man centre midfield and this was the case today. Gerrard's free kick was well struck but the invisible Giggs did a great disappearing act as the wall broke off. I felt that perhaps we had scored to early, if that is possible, as I knew they would bring on Rooney, Nani and the Little Pea. My worries proved right as United did pull one back about 12 minutes later. Their goal came from a corner that I thought was a goal kick, in what was otherwise a good performance by the referee. I thought he was right not to give Rio a second yellow card but it was a foul on Adam for our goal.

Typically when United score in the 80th minute to draw level you feel that an onslaught is coming. In this case, after United scored, Liverpool almost scored directly from the kick off as Downing played in a fantastic ball to Kuyt who did ever so well to get on the end of it. The only problem was that his shot was too close to the United keeper who did well to save the effort. More Liverpool pressure with the very impressive Henderson hitting a fantastic effort that was saved by United Man of the Match, de Gea. More bedlam in the United penalty area as somehow Rooney stopped Suarez from heading the ball into the goal. To be fair to Rooney it was a great clearance. Our big centre back skied the rebound well over the top. In the last minute of the game Henderson had a great chance to take all 3 points after another good ball by Downing, but his header was over the top of the goal.

Overall it's only a point but this result shows how far we have come in one year in the fact that most LFC supporters are disappointed with the result. United came for the draw and they got it so credit to them.

I'm interested to see what will happen next week with Lucas out. I think a five man works when Luis is on his own. I felt Enrique was excellent today again and Kelly defended very well, then again it was against Giggs who did nothing. Kelly offered nothing going forward however. Jamie and Martin were solid at the back, perhaps both were a touch at fault for their goal but it was just a well worked corner. Downing was in and out of the match, but did show a willingness to run at the defence. Kuyt worked very hard and was unlucky not to score. I thought his passing was good. Finally it was great to have our captain back. I thought except for one clearance in the later stages of the match he was very good. Considering the tempo of the game it was fantastic to see him make it through the 90 minutes and to score a goal.

Gerrard was my man of the match and I also loved his five fingers celebration for the viewing Manc's all over the world.

Great article, and I agree on United's defensive strategy, but I think Kelly deserves more credit because he completely stopped Ashley Young (not Ryan Giggs because he played much more central) and no one has been able to do that so far this season. If Kelly was able to get into the attack even after stopping Young, it would have showed he should easily be England's first choice RB.

I love Suarez, but he gets 1 chance every game where you're like "...noooo, how did you miss that??" and then he makes some ridiculous play and ask "how did he do that??". I love his style, maybe a defender will 1 day realize he plays you to turn sharp around you. You will either knock him down, pull him back, or he will get you to trip him.

It was funny to see United line up to park the bus, it's a bit like what Man City did at Man U last season, where they came to ruin the game, but then again they did get 1 more point than last season. De Gea was phenomenal, that save on Henderson's almost Golaso was amazing. I'm also still shocked that Giggs physically got OUT of the way of the ball... you're in the wall, man! lol It reminded me of Gerrards free kick last year at United

the team played well, but I think Bellamy should have come on for Downing, at least after United scored. I was happy also that Adam resisted the urge to hollywood pass it 40 yards at every chance..

We are unlucky. We need to be more clinical with the chances we created. Really hope King Kenny will bring in a prolific goal poacher during the January window. Higuain or Negredo would be great addition, although they are expensive acquisitions. The cheaper alternatives and the one for the future would be the likes of Sturridge or Luuk de Jong. I agree that the line-up against ManU are our strongest. However, I really hope Coates will get more playing time. My ideal line-up should be Reina, Johnson, Coates, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Adam, Gerrard, Kuyt, Downing & Suarez. YNWA

I'll just say, I'm a Utd supporter, but you write a very balanced report on the match. Much better than the Utd correspondent on here he sucks bad...

We came with 4-5-1 (a shock to me also) because SAF has one eye on mid week UCL and also City next week. That Suarez chance in the first half would have been very unlucky for us if he scored because the ball stops practically dead after hitting our defender.

You guys could have won, maybe should have won, but you can't say we didn't earn our point.

5-fingered salute? That's about all you guys have to hang onto at the moment right? Ha.

Your post is worthy of comment, but I'm afraid all the Liverpool fans are cursing at Mark over in the Man Utd thread. :(

yes, united parked the bus. and funny how their fans are saying we can't win against their team wifout nani, rooney and chicharito, like its our fault they werent played. Typical manure fans..
all that is stopping us from grabbing all 3 points is de gea..

King Kenny had made a big mistake on not playing Carroll and Bellamy on the second half instead kept Dirk Kuyt and Adam on the pitch. The duo looked faded on the second half and KK supposed to bring in Big Andy and speedy Bellamy to win the game.Look at the old man Ferguson,he used all the 3 subs appropriately to steal the 1 point from us. King Kenny shouldn't bring in Henderson despite Bellamy and Carroll are available at the disposal. If Carroll and Bellamy able to play that day for sure we will get different result and better result than disappointing result. Just imagine we are playing at home and lost 3 points easily to our arch rival and most hatred club in the football. We are capable and enable to banish them but King Kenny made a big mistake not to throw Carroll and Bellamy on the game. I think Irene Rush or Steve Clarke should take over King Kenny's hot seat if he keep doing silly decision to drop points at home. He had big squad so he should utilized it maximum as he can!

5 fingers for 5 years since Pool last won a trophy...? Good to be reminded of that one, bit fowleresque, small time. Very sly match report too... but will let you off, it is a liverpool blog.

One last thing, since getting a draw in the cup final on Saturday, scouse fans have done nothing but bang on about it showing 'how far they had come' and how they are back at United's level. B*llocks, it's one game, and United's least important one of the week ahead (despite Fergies pre-match comments - the champions league game and city next week are bigger games), and if we are talking about 1 game, how about the 4-0 total and utter humiliation at Spurs a couple of weeks back - does that show how far you've come? or was it meekly set aside as a one off no sooner had the whistle blew. Or scandalously blamed on the ref? Perspective.

I think the way Liverpool played on Saturday against Man U was fantasitic. If we can play like this all the games remaining definately i can see the team climbing higher and higher.
The other observation, let us get Tevet from Man City on loan so that they can partner with Luis. The combination of Tevet and Luis can be dangerous and no team can with stand the force that can come from these two players.
Luis and Tevet are fast and holds the ball such that very few defenders can overpower them. That is how a striker suppose to be. If you look at the way Luis played on Saturday, he really created a lot of chances. Even the free kick Gerrald scored if you saw how Luis confused the keeper that was marvellous. The keeper could not move at all.
My plea is to convince Tevet to come to Anfield. The Liverpool management look into this issue seriously. It is high time we crowned the championship. It is now not tomorrow.

About
Kevin Brodie Kevin Brodie has been fortunate enough to see some of Liverpool’s greatest teams and players in action over the last 35 years. Reds fans are spoiled for choice in trying to pick their favourite memory. The best early memory I have of watching Liverpool in person was our 7-0 thrashing of Spurs, with the 7th goal being a thing of beauty. Watching us in 89 lift the FA Cup after the terrible disaster at Hillsborough was also very special. My favourite Liverpool moment on the TV has to be the Champions League final in 2005. It was a day I will never forget.
