Liverpool

What a battling performance by the men in black at the Emirates. Liverpool ended the game without captain, vice-captain and big target man. We also had two "kids" at the outside full backs yet if there was any team that looked liked scoring in the last 20 minutes it was us.

In the second half, Suarez had three fantastic chances, two were hit at the keeper and the other one was blasted well over the top when a pull back would have been better. Arsneal's Van Persie's should have scored but Reina made a fantastic save to deny the Arsenal man. Liverpool were outplayed in the first half but for all of the possession Arsenal had, they never moved the ball with enough pace to hurt us. Only a dead ball caused us problems as the ball crashed on to the post and was headed out by Flanagan. Once Auerlio went down I feared the worst, however young Robinson came in and did very well. Liverpool kept their 4-3-3 shape going with Lucas, Spearing and Meireles all working so hard. I think Lucas covered every blade of grass and was the best player on the field (both teams).

Andy Carroll came off after jarring his knee to be replaced by another kid in Jonjo Shelvey. With Spearing, Shelvey, Robinson and Flannigan on the pitch, Rafa's work at the academy was paying off. Dalglish was giving them the opportunity that their hard work deserved. Kenny has worked wonders with the squad and surely a permanent deal for him is only a matter of time.

Liverpool were forced into a further re-shuffle when Carragher lost consciousness on the field and had to be carried off on a stretcher. The injury looked serious but fortunately for all Reds the injury was only minor. The big Greek came on and did well but Arsenal could not make our defenders work as Liverpool's men in the middle were always clipping at the Arsenal players heels. With Carragher's injury and other stops the ref signalled for a minimum of 8 minutes to be played. Mr. Wenger please note the word minimum. In the 95th minute Arsenal were gifted a penalty when Fabergas threw himself into Spearing's legs. The young Scouser got his legs tangled with the seasoned Spaniard who did a great job of selling the kick to the referee. RVP made no mistake from the spot.

Somehow I think Kuyt almost scored from the kick off but the TV cameras missed it. To be fair I had pretty much given up but most importantly the players hadn't. Shelvey battled for the ball just outside the box and Lucas was tripped up just on the line. Of course the ref gave it just outside which I think was the correct call. Time was well past 8 minutes but with Arsenal's long goal celebration and with them failing to retreat 10 yards the ref allowed a few minutes extra. Suarez's shot was blocked but Lucas, like Fabergas, did a great job of asking for the contact and as soon as the Arsenal player made contact down he went. For once Mariner didn't hesitate for Liverpool and Kuyt finished with aplomb.

Of course, Wenger was doing his usual, only seeing what happened when it was to his benefit. Later he said all we did was defend which is quite comical really given our resources on the day. Of course we did defend, but we also did a lot more then that and based on our second half display we did deserve a share of the spoils.

Fantastic battling performance from the lads!

About
Kevin Brodie Kevin Brodie has been fortunate enough to see some of Liverpool’s greatest teams and players in action over the last 35 years. Reds fans are spoiled for choice in trying to pick their favourite memory. The best early memory I have of watching Liverpool in person was our 7-0 thrashing of Spurs, with the 7th goal being a thing of beauty. Watching us in 89 lift the FA Cup after the terrible disaster at Hillsborough was also very special. My favourite Liverpool moment on the TV has to be the Champions League final in 2005. It was a day I will never forget.
