Liverpool are into the last 16 of the Europa Cup in a hard earned victory at Anfield. The 6pm local kick off time was a weird one for me, watching Liverpool live at 10am was odd but it worked out ok.
It was great to see Anfield packed and for once the TV producers actually allowed the atmosphere to build by showing some of the pre-game songs and chants from the ground
This was not a pretty game to watch but perhaps if the referee would have given us what was a stone wall pk inside of the first 5 minutes it would have been a different outcome. As it was Liverpool were made to wait until the 85th minute to get their noses in front and keep it. The hard working, and our man of the match, Kuyt was the scorer. He deserved the goal. It was worrying that our best peformer in the first half Kelly was forced off at half-time and Liverpool seemed to revert to amore orthdox 4-4-2 with Kuyt further up the field. He made a difference up top as Ngog, a willing runner, had a nightmare holding the ball up and shooting on goal. He should have scored at least one goal, perhaps two and also took the ball of Cole's foot (who did seem certain to score). Cole was pretty poor in the first half, along with Poulsen and Ngog. Even Lucas was giving the ball at times. I thought Agger,Wilson and Kelly were the only three players who truly looked comfortable on the ball. It's my opinion that Spearing should be ahead of Poulsen in the pecking order for matches.
Raul missed a great chance after a cross by Kuyt in the first half and was hammered after he missed. I'm just don't understand why this is allowed. The player did not get the ball and the ball was not out of play, surely that is a foul?
At the end of the match Liverpool seemed to be the walking wounded with our big Greek off for stitches and Agger taking a knock on the back of the leg but Kenny managed to make the right changes and we got the goal we deserved to go through. Hopefully Agger, Johnson, Kelly, Gerrard, and Suarez will all be available for Sunday althought Wilson looks good on the ball and in the air.
