Liverpool

Liverpool were hammered on Monday by a clearly better side. Man City were better than Liverpool in every department (quicker, stronger, more agile and tactically). Our ridiculous idea to play a 4-4-2 with Ngog and Torres clearly did not work.

The gap between Man City and Liverpool has never been more evident than it was on Monday. I would expect them to be better than us after all the money they have spent in the last two transfer windows, however I thought we could and would still compete with them.

It's going to take time for Hodgson to understand that at Liverpool it's not acceptable to be beaten 3-0 by any side, regardless of the muppets we have in charge of this club. Our previous manager worked under similar constraints and he needed (and did) find a solution that allowed us to compete. Let's not forgot we were outplayed against Arsenal as well in the first half until Cole got sent off.

I'm hoping that the Mascherano situation gets sorted out and we can push Gerrard further up the field in the absence of Cole. I'm willing to put this game behind us as the manager asked, however we need to improve and improve drastically. Lucas and Gerrard clearly didn't work well together in an old-fashioned partnership and can you remember a pass between Ngog and Torres all night?

Our other new boy, who has looked good in previous occasions, was clearly well off the pace as well. I would have removed Milan off after 50 minutes and had Maxi on to help contain Johnson who was killing us down our left. Agger also surely deserves a go in the middle of the park with Fabio getting a game at left back.

I thought Jamie was our best player on the night closely followed by Gerrard.

It's evident we need to stick to 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 away. And we need a passer in the middle. Oh hang on, we've just loaned him out. Ludicrous. Losing TWO quality midfield players in a week is NOT on.

UP liverpool!!
Yea! i agree with kevin. i think the defensive line up should be: Jamie, Agger, Fabio and Johnson. However, Ngog pairing with Tores will never produce goals. Both of them needs a support stricker to facilitate there chances..so i will suggest:
Tores and Kurt+ Cole
or
Ngog(lone stricker) while babel and Kurt plays wings. leaving Gerand and Cole to pick up the pieces...

Why be surprised about the away loss? Roy had a terrible away record with Fulham last year too! Some things might not change!

I could'nt understand why our manager did'nt make a change at half time. 2-0 down and struggling, comon sense would tell you to hook ngog because he did nothing to help the cause.watching the game on monday night it was like a throw back to last season, "rafa has left his curse"

I agree, we need better players. The game with MC showed many holes that we need to fill. Torres is a threat, but he's not playing at his level, putting Torres as the only striker won't work for Liverpool. If they put 2 strikers upfront, Liverpool doesn't have another good enough striker to be considered a threat. We also lack true left wing and right wing, while i repsect Kuyt as a player and he's a hardworking player, he's not a true right wing.
Lucas is a backup player, but i don't think he should be starting in 1st team because he's not a very godo defender nor attacker, he is in the middle of both and he doesn't seem to create the flow that's necessary to win.

Good article. It is going to take a while for Hodgson to really get used to Anfield. What do you think the chance is that Mascherano does go to Barcelona? Personally I think that if Barcelona come close on the asking price, Liverpool should sell.

I agree 100% Add to your line up i'd like to see babel down the left Milan with Torres upfront and ngog and Lucas on the bench both shouldn't be starting eleven players

i would have removed Ngog and Jovanovic, put Paulson with Lucas, bring Gerrard down to the right flank to exploit Lescott (another make-shift left back),pushed Kuyt behind Torres and Maxi make the Left flank more competitive. We could have won.

There is no way we would compete in the midfield with City but we could have drawn them out wide while putting some more effort in the middle.
Gerrard would strike a lot more fear in Lescott than all Kuyt could muster in the first half.

About
Kevin Brodie Kevin Brodie has been fortunate enough to see some of Liverpool’s greatest teams and players in action over the last 35 years. Reds fans are spoiled for choice in trying to pick their favourite memory. The best early memory I have of watching Liverpool in person was our 7-0 thrashing of Spurs, with the 7th goal being a thing of beauty. Watching us in 89 lift the FA Cup after the terrible disaster at Hillsborough was also very special. My favourite Liverpool moment on the TV has to be the Champions League final in 2005. It was a day I will never forget.
