Manchester United were handed a life line in a game that was slipping away from them by the man in the middle, England’s best ref Howard Webb on Sunday. Of course, our left back didn't help matters by heading a simple clearance directly to Valencia but it was not a penalty kick.

All contact was made outside the box and the man with ego never even went to ask his assistant referee what he saw which is simply not what a good ref should do. I understand the argument that Masch perhaps should have gone, at a full speed, I thought the same but in watching the reply Carragher was clearly in the box so a yellow was the correct card but the penalty was harsh.

Of course Rooney bottled the kick but was jammy as the ball bounced right to him. Once United equalized I felt 1-1 would be the best outcome for us. Liverpool held their own in the first half but United were the better side in the second half with Gerrard having less and less of influence on the game as Torres was getting almost no support up top.

Carragher was excellent at the back and I thought Maxi was very good as well. Webb continued to give United every close decision, giving Liverpool almost nothing. Goals change games and Webb handed United one.

If Torres scored at the end it would have been a fair result but just like our season has been going he did not convert. A top four finish seems very unlikely at this point and personally I think we will finish in 6th or 7th. It's been a terrible year, one of the most disappointing in recent memory. Compound this with the fact that United look set to win number 19 it's been awful. I want to crawl under a rock...

United are a shadow of the team they were last season but they win on belief and you have to tip your hat to them. When they are presented with opportunities (ie. dodgy penalty decisions they take them by the scruff of the neck)

About
Kevin Brodie Kevin Brodie has been fortunate enough to see some of Liverpool’s greatest teams and players in action over the last 35 years. Reds fans are spoiled for choice in trying to pick their favourite memory. The best early memory I have of watching Liverpool in person was our 7-0 thrashing of Spurs, with the 7th goal being a thing of beauty. Watching us in 89 lift the FA Cup after the terrible disaster at Hillsborough was also very special. My favourite Liverpool moment on the TV has to be the Champions League final in 2005. It was a day I will never forget.
