An odd game really. Liverpool totally dominated everything but the scoreline, Unirea's best player on the night was their goalie and if I was Rafa I would keep an eye on him as a back up for Reina. I thought he was good coming for high balls and stopped almost everything that came at him.
Liverpool could have scored after 25 seconds but Gerrard's shot was well saved. Liverpool kept up the pressure throughout the first half, with chance after chance coming. Aurelio hit a good shot that was well saved, Gerrard should have done better with a header, Ngog had a shot that deflected wide, Riera had a shot that went wide, Kuyt had a good shot while Unirea offered nothing in attack.
Our ball movement was good, however, we could not find the killer pass. Riera was very frustrating in the first half, only producing one moment of quality; a cross to Gerrard. I thought he was our worst performer on the night. Also poor was Alberto, who gave a few good balls but just doesn't do anything for me yet. Perhaps if he was more willing to shoot I would feel that we have another weapon on our hands. As of yet I can't remember an actual shot on target from him.
The second half was more of the same as we dominated possession throughout and should have scored a few goals. The break though finally came after some neat play from Babel, who did well in his substitute role, however I'm still not convinced he deserves a start. This was a good game for him to come on in, as he did not need to track back and they were pretty tired.
But I'm not going to knock the lad all that much. He did pretty well overall and his cross to the impressive Pacheco was perfect. The little Spaniard did well to head to the ball down to Ngog who couldn't miss.
Gerrard almost increased the lead with a fantastic pull down but his shot went just wide. I thought Gerrard was much improved and was very composed on the ball.
I would look for three changes on Sunday, Insua/Lucas and Maxi coming in for Fabio/Alberto and Riera.
Harry Harris on Soccernet giving us a 4 is a joke. I mean we were not world beaters on Thursday night but our movement and passing created at least seven excellent chances. If Harris gave us a four this time what did he give us against Wolves away?
Kevin Brodie rating = 6, a win and a clean sheet
