Liverpool played much better against Lyon than they did against Sunderland on Saturday but the outcome was still the same as it was been in the last four games; ending in defeat. This is the first time in 22 years that we have lost four games on the trot. As the song goes, this is the wind and the rain portion of following our club.
It is amazing to me how many emails I get from you so called supporters criticizing Rafa. People have short memories, or perhaps they have only started supporting Liverpool after those six minutes in 2005, but we were a very poor side and didn't expect to qualify for the knock out stages of the Champions League every season.
Rafa has raised expectations so greatly it is difficult to match them. He has made some decisions in the transfer market that have not worked out, see Ryan Babel and Dossena but in my opinion he is still the main man. If we can just stick behind him and this crop of players I think we can turn it around.
Let's not forget what our total spend was this off-season. In a summer where our owners had the ability to go for throat of our rivals we decided to actually make money in the transfer market, which is hardly the sign of a team going for it. Rafa's squad looks poor this year and we look tired. I would argue that the line up against Sunderland was missing our four best players from last year: Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard and Torres. Even United would struggle if they were missing their four best players.
I just can't see us beating United on Sunday, even a draw would be a welcome result. We need stop the rot somehow and get players fit.
Finally, apparently according to big fat head Steve Bruce I'm a "saddo" because soon as the ball hit the balloon I said it should be a drop ball. How our players didn't react more is beyond me. Shame on them for not understanding the rules and I just can't understand how a professional ref didn't know either.
Missing a decision is one thing but to clearly not understand a law of the game is another. There is no grey area here... If the ball hits an outside object it's a drop ball. I might go to the United game on Sunday... run on to the pitch... knock the ball in the United goal and see if the ref can screw up that decision as well.
Also, fair play to the lad who was in our end supporting our team but when he is leaving the house is he saying, got me lunch, me lemonade, me jacket, oh, wait forgot me beach ball? Leave the jester hats and the beach balls at home son.
Finally, for any San Francisco Bay Area Reds, Des Whelan of the Stephens Green pub in Mountain View CA is an Irish Red. The "Green" is having its 10th year anniversary and he is organizing a golf outing with all the proceeds going to the Marina Daglish Cancer Appeal. If interested please contact him at crory1972@yahoo.com. The golf is on 11/8/09 at 10am in Sunnyvale. It's a great pub and for a great cause.

you wouldn't be allowed to kick the ball in the united goal. their fans don't sabotage them. the ref has the power and he can't rightly stop the motion of a shot for a drop ball initiated by a defending fan. keep it all the way funky as a fan

Agreed with you... give the man sometime and he will turn it around, we might not with the BPl but we might end up with a FA Cup or Champions League trophy... In RAFA we trust...

For me, Rafa really has been the master of Europe, but still hasn't got his head around the EPL. Last season was his best chance in a long long time. However, as most would agree, Liverpool's squad depth is simply not up to the other big 3 (or even 5 now, counting Spurs and Man City). Last season when we thrashed Man U at OT, they had Giggs, Berbatov, Scholes on the bench. We had Jay Spearing, Dossena. Gulf in class I feel. And without Torres and Gerrard, we look like nothing more than a mid-table side.
Somehow, Rafa doesn't strike me as knowing what he needs to do to make us perform in the EPL. Europe is a different matter. In 2005, we barely got through the group stages, so I won't be surprised if we still turn it around and even get to the Finals.
Nothing wrong with criticising the manager, as long as it's constructive. I've supported Pool since 1985, and will still do, but I believe that this season is perhaps Rafa's last chance to show he is worthy of managing this club.

Nothing was done when the ball hit a couple of balloons in a City - Sheffield FA cup game a couple of seasons back, So you can't really blame the reff for not knowing he had to call that but instead blame the whole refereeing committee for repeating a mistake they should've learned from, and prolly would've had it happened to a bigger team than City.

i don't know how all the mistakes you have mentioned still make Rafa a good option, it exactly because of these mistakes he has to go, the wrong decisions on the transfer market, we have to be bold as a club and realize near misses are not any good, he has done all he can and it's hasn't been good enough. he is a good coach but Liverpool need a better coach for his goodness had failed to deliver.

well, name me four united players whom if not present can upset the team like how liverpool is now?
i'm very surprised that you cannot get over the fact that benitez mismanaged the side to what it is today, combined with poor transfer decisions.
what happened in 05, he did it with a houllier inherited squad, which he then went on to derail the team.
yes, they achieved 2nd last season, but think it carefully, was it not a flash in pan result?

Kevin,
I would like to comment on the title race. Its quite simple, if we win every remaining game, we will finish with 102 points, which would almost certainly be enough to win the title. Despite recent form, the title is within the realm of possibility. It starts with one inspired performance at a time and belief that anything is possible.

Don't worry Kev, those fans who say Rafa should be fired will sing his praises through the night. If we can get Stevie G, Torres and Aquilani fit soon, we will be back in the race. People have forgotten that all of the top teams have lost important players and Chelsea will lose 3 or 4 to African Nations Cup. Once we are in striking distance come January or February, then we are in with a chance to win the title.

You got this one wrong. We indeed make united look like spectators after all. That's the kind of match which really defines our season. And now that we have defeated the Champions, a lot of those blabbering mouths should stuff themselves. Rafael Benitez is the man to lead Liverpool towards any kind of serious trophy challenge. It should stay that way for a long long time. We are going to have Gerrard back now. That should settle things along with the impending starts from Aquilani. Benitez - You Will Never Walk Alone.

honestly speaking i was of the idea tht we needed to change the coach but that was before sunday game when we whitewashed them, and now what i bliv is the best thing for us to do is to stick with the coach and boost the confidence of our current and STOP this but damn idea tht we cant win without gerrard and torres, coz even without gerrard in midfeild look at just how brilliant aurellio played and i was kind of asking myslf where the hell has he been hiding! i know our critics we'll always try to put us down but lets prove them wrong by sticking together as a club of faithful supporters whether we win or lose not the attitude i had observed in the past few weeks,i mean guys lets us be seruios we are the only club on that never walks alone. liverpool for life.

Am the greatest Liverpool supporter here in Tanzania,East Africa.I strongly condemn those whose critisize Rafa, may be they dont have an LFC spirit:our spirit is the one which ENDURES!Rafa is the man who can take Liverpool back to the glory times of winning trophies particularly the Premier League Title!WE WILL NEVER WALK ALONE THIS SEASON.

Actually the fans want Rafa, it's the American owners that have to go, it's greedy money out there and it really isn't helping the future of this great club. I cannot tell you how much I have fear that this stigma of stupid Yank owners still being there by next season. I've been a supporter of the Reds since I thought everyone about Manure united just being a Trainyard club called Newton Heath. Please, please, Liverpool owners get your act together we cannot look back in history come 2020 and lose out to the Manure Devils !!!
