Well thank you to Sean Davies for getting sent off in this match after two avoidable incidents. Had he not been sent off I’m afraid Liverpool might be in looking at a very different international break. Liverpool dominated the game but found themselves behind twice.
Bolton only real threat, like usual , seemed to come from set pieces and Liveprool have not exactly been defending well from set pieces this term.
I have to say I was not all that surprised when Bolton went ahead from a corner. Once again we were slow to react, which has nothing to do with zonal marketing and everything to do with a lack of a presence in the box. Our new Greek player did ok overall in the air and dealt with many balls well, however this deep corner took him out of the mix.Little Insua didn’t get off the ground and once the ball went across the face of the goal the outcome was inevitable. We must have one of the shorter teams in the league (Jamie, Insua, Masch, Lucas, Yossi)
I just hoped this goal would give us the momentum needed to attack. Gerrard was being kept very quiet by Bolton’s man marking however Torres did have a couple of very decent efforts on goal. Glenn Johnson appeared after a Liverpool corner was not cleared. He faked right, went left and hit a power drive into the back of the Bolton net. At this point I felt we must surely go on and win this match.
I couldn’t believe after 2 minutes of the re-start that we were behind again. This goal was criminal to concede. A long kick by the keeper, our new greek defender was out jumped and Mascherano was walking as Cohen (son of Avi) slipped by and hammered the ball home. Carragher also slipped and I hear people blaming him. I say to them watch it again and it was clearly Mascherano lack of covering that caused this goal. Once this goal went in the cynical side in me came out and I thought we were in trouble.
However when Davies got sent off, Gerrard became involved and we looked much better. The move between Gerrard, Kuyt and Torres for the equalizer was fantastic. Gerrards hammer blow came with 7 minutes on the clock after a great knock down by Torres.
I was of course very pleased that we went ahead but I was also a touch disapointed that we didn't go down the field and wrap it up. Bolton looked dangerous a few times in the dying seconds and this came should have been put to bed. Yossi and others should have buried the game but were trying to walk the ball in the net
Overall it was a much needed 3 points but we still need to work on some of the defensive mistakes.
On a final note I read Ryans Babel’s comments in the papers and on soccernet. If he did in fact say them then I have two words for him “Good bye” I was at the Spurs game and he was by far the worst player on the pitch for both sides (not including the ref). He didn’t do one thing right the entire match. While I understand you win and lose as a team he must be joking here.

Regarding your comments on Babel, you are right to say he was rubbish at Tottenham but so was half the team. When Yossi came on his intelligent quick passes were much tougher for the team to deal with.
But i can't hold it against Babel for being a bit angry.
1) He prefers to be central, right flank, then left flank so he gets lumped into his least favorite position. They say great players can play anywhere ... well he aint a great player. yet.
2) People are passing him the ball when he is under huge pressure. Some of his problem where definately caused by Lucas/Insua passing him the ball at the wrong time.
3) You look at the replays and you see there are no players coming to look for an outlet pass everyone is just sorta standing around waiting for him to lose it. Gerrard and Torres seemed to be stuck on the rightflank with Kuyt for a big group hug all game.
Above all we have conceded 7 goals in 4 games. This is while we have 6 defensive players playing. And Babel takes heat?

Very true in regards Babel, He has failed to take his chances, over priced, under achieved
Set pieces our problem, why doesn't the keeper not have 2 defenders on the posts at corners, I am stagaged, basic defending at the very worst ian't it ? drop gerrard back to the midfield , get mascha, to pull his finger out , and put kuyt,or someone else, up front with Torres to give him support, he can't take on 3 at the back
they will win all day ? Johnson's runs from deep creates width, better chances seem to be coming from this , if torres can get on a roll, I think there will be a few teams in for a hiding soon

The team still has a long way to go before we can really feel they are up for the league challenge. We still haven't got the attack midfield that can unlock stubborn defences. I still feel putting Lucas on the bench and let Javier play along side with Yossi could be a good move this will allow Stevie to play just behind the strikers. Javier can be a holding mid fielder and Yossi is capable of defence when needed. With Reira and Kurt on either flanks being supported by the backs, Yossi and Stevie could find themselves with acres of space. Lucas can come in as sub when we need more stability in the mid field.
As for Babel I think he should get his priorities sorted out, I have watched his play recently and I think its time he was put with the reserves so that he improves he game. Lastly I think Rafa needs to put out strong sides every game not matter what the opposition get the boys to work together against different strength opponents. Leave 3 players out for carling so they rest
