This was the first time in a long time that I can remember a Liverpool league game not being on the TV. On the final day of the season all of the Premier league games start at the same time so Setanta and Fox Sports had some deciding to do. I can understand showing the relegation struggles first, Hull v United, Villa v Newcastle and Boro v West Ham but how Stoke v Arsenal, Everton v Fulham, even Blackburn v West Brom was shown over Liverpool. I resorted to watching it on a streaming feed and for what I could see of the match Liverpool dominated from start to finish. The only blemish on the match was that Robbie Keane prevented Reina from claiming his third golden glove awards with a late goal. To Keane's credit he did not celebrate on bit. It's to bad that it didnt' work out for Keane, but we were clearly a better team after he went back to Spurs.
The last game of the season was bitter sweet. Liverpool had one of their best league seasons in a long time, scoring the most goals in the league and only losing twice. It is amazing to me that Liverpool didnt' win the league this year, it just shows you how good United are. Liverpool's run in was championship material, even Gary Neville said so, but United just didn't slip up. They were trailing against Villa, 2-0 down to Spurs and behind at half-time to Wigan. They came back and one all three Sure the Webb decision at Spurs put them on their way but my word I just don't see the weakness in that side, and it pains me to say so. They spend tons of money, have a second team that can beat Hull City (who have everything to play for).
Once Liverpool established a side, with Yossi and Kuyt, enjoying fine seasons, we seemed to really turn it on. The media really love to talk about our home draws and obviously they were the main reason we didn't win the title. I prefer to look at one team and two words sum up why we didn't win the league this year, Stoke City. We absolutely battered them in the first game at Anfield and I still point the finger to the ref's decision early on when Gerrard scored a perfectly legit goal only for it to be waived off. If that counts we would have battered them, in saying that we did batter them, we just didn't score. The return game at their place was frustrating. Stoke are a good team at home and we had Keane and Torres on the bench for that one. Torres was tired and had many injuries and Keane was left on that bench for Rafa. This game was famously right after Rafa's accurate and well said but ill-timed rant against Fergie. We should have won both of those games, it's the small details that prevented us from winning the league this year. As Rafa says you need to be almost perfect to win it.
The last game of the season was all about Sami Hyypia. Rafa gave him a 6 minute cameo in which he almost scored. The fans were marvelous, calling for him t throughout the match. Once the game was over you could see how much it meant to him and how much he meant to his team-mates and supporters. Hyypia is a Lliverpool legend and our best ever foreign player (not form england, ireland, scotland or wales).
This season had many high and lows but we didn't win anything and Liverpool exist to win trophies. Liverpool made fantastic strides and we participated in our first title win in years which was fun and nerve racking. It's an important summer for us. We need the right "balance" of new players and have to hold on to most of our existing ones (see Xabi Alonso).
