As anyone who has been reading my "blog" on Soccernet knows I dislike international football. Sure when the summer rolls around and the World Cup or European Championship's are on TV it's something to watch but the qualification games are a bore. So it was nice to have our players back at Melwood on Thursday preparing for a league game against Fulham.
I always felt Craven Cottage would be a tough game. With the above mentioned international break I felt some our players would come back tired but after a shaky 5 minute opening we played them off the park. How in the world we were not ahead by 5 clear goals at half-time was a mystery. Yes, the goalie pulled off two good saves, one from Torres and the other from Dossena but the frame of the goal was Fulham's best friend in the opening 45 minutes. Liverpool hit the wood work 4 times.
In the second half Liverpool dominated and had some good chances again to go in front. When Yossi's clever back heel failed to find the net I fell to the ground. This wasn't going to be our day I said as lay on the ground. Just minutes later, into injury time, I found myself out in the front garden jumping up and down, while the kids were staring at me like their dad was going to a mental institution. When Yossi's goal hit the back of the net, I waited to make sure it counted, and for the first time in 19 years, I allowed myself to believe we could actually do this.
It was a great result and a very good performance. United's antics 22 hours later were cruel. I honestly felt with that game ticking away that this was finally going to be the year. United were missing many players and they looked out of it but give them credit as they never stopped going in the last 15. You have to tip your hat as they are a fantastic squad.
Finally please take a few moments out of your day to buy the New Fields of Anfield Road song/cd. All proceeds go to the Hillsborough Family Support Group:
