Not much you can say after you thrash your old rivals 4-1 on their patch. It was an odd game really as I through both teams were sloppy in possession .Liverpool suffered two early blows with Alonso and Arbeloa ruled out over muscle injuries. Up stepped Hyypia and Lucas who both filled in very well. Hyypia was a rock at the back and Lucas was much more careful with the ball then he has been in previous weeks.
Once Ronaldo scored from the spot I have to say I thought the game was beyond us. United have just been rolling in recent weeks and we have not exactly scored many goals at their place in the last few years. I suppose I forgot that we have a weapon in Fernando Torres that is hard to contain. 4 minutes after United scored Skirtel's clearance was a hit and hope that worked to perfection Vidic was quaking in his boots as he misjudged the flight of the ball. Once the ball bounced their was only going to be one winner in a foot race. Torres still had some work to do but he made the finish look easy. I only noticed his 5 fingered salute the next day.
Once the equalizer went in Liverpool started to play with more confidence. Torres controlled well and found Gerrard making a surging run into the box. Evra had no choice to bring him down and Gerrard converted from the spot. The start of the second half was Liverpool's worst period of the match. Ronaldo and Tevez went close and Rooney was looking lively. Once Kuyt laid the ball off for Gerrard and Vidic mis-controlled it Gerrard was through on goal. With only the goalie to beat Vidic brought Gerrard down and Wiley sent off Vidic. I was furious at the time as I didn't fancy our chances to hold on against 10 men. I would have rather seen Gerrard go through and score and make it 1-3 but once Aurelio curled in a beauty I felt this just might be our day. However at this point I would be lying if I said I was breathing easy...games against United are never easy, and this was no different!
I finally allowed myself to relax when the Dossenator chipped in a peach of effort to make the score 1-4. At that point Old Trafford was half empty and the only sounds you could hear was Ferguson saying they were the better the team (while declining all post match interviews, in protest over the fixture list-surely his must be joking)
Of course the title is still in their hands but at least this result gave the players a belief that they can beat them and perhaps other teams in the league the same feeling. If not for this year then perhaps for next.
My man of the match was Aurelio who was so calm with the ball and did a great job of marking Ronaldo. So good that Ronaldo went over the other side to try his luck with Carragher. His free-kick was superb as well.
