Despite some sparkling performances thus far from the vast array of outfield talent that coach Ciro Ferrara has at his disposal, it is the ever reliable figure between the sticks that is proving he is surely the most important part of the Bianconeri's title winning puzzle.
After his mid-week performance against French champions Bordeaux, his next challenge was to shut out newly-promoted Livorno in this latest Serie A clash. Albeit there were long periods of dominance on Juve’s part, the away side tested the Azzuri’s number on more than one occasion. Had it not been for his heroics in denying the likes of Francesco Tavano and Cristiano Lucarelli, the game may have had a very different ending. The shot-stopper has now only conceded a solo strike from Roma’s Daniele de Rossi after four games of the season, and his fine form has also been replicated on the international stage in the qualification campaign.
A well-placed header from Vincenzo Iaquinta, and a delightful chip from Claudio Marchisio were enough to grab all three points, maintaining Juve’s 100% record in the league this season. However, surely with such a towering presence in goal, the ability to shut out opponents week in week out will prove to be just as important as firing in the goals to Scudetto glory. His undoubted talent is of course something that Juventus fans have had the luxury of experiencing over many years now, but with the league a realistic target for the first time in a long time, he will be more important than ever. The question I pose to you is this, had it not been for 'the Old Lady's' most reliable performer, would we be flying so high?
As is the usual case with a side containing so many stars, many of the plaudits will be directed toward the goal scorers and the creative players within the side. However, to buck the trend as it were, I feel it is only appropriate that Gigi is given the fitting praise he so rightfully deserves after this latest performance. If the defensive unit can continue to keep it tight at the back, and with a side brimming with potential goal-scorers and match winners, it can only lead to big things for the Turin giants this season.
All in all, another fine display sees the Bianconeri climb back to the summit of the table, albeit perhaps for only 24 hours. One thing is for sure, we can rest easy, in the knowledge that we are safe in the hands of Mr. Gianluigi Buffon.

Gianluigi Buffon signed as the most expensive goalkeeper ever has provided that backbone that has allowed JUVE to know they're always going to be in the game.
Gigi's performance versus Livorno was superhuman. Not simply his superb saves but his exceptional reading of the game, to make impossible situations straightforward stops. Gig's ability to stand out as the world's best goalkeeper is that he has all characteristics of a great goalkeeper while the other pretenders may have 90%. Superb reflexes, exceptional positioning, fantastic command of his box, composed and well capable with ball at his feet.

Without an ounce of doubt Buffon is top best goalkeepers in the world. But I must say Casillas comes first.
I would ranked them in the following order:
Iker Casillas Real Madrid
Gigi Buffon Juve
Julio Cesar Inter

zia i won't disagree with you that cesar and casillas might be better .. however at this point in time in the past month or two, hands down Buffon is #1 in the world .. at the moment

A solid goalkeeper can definitely be the difference between a title and second or third. Arsenal and AC Milan as examples, you cannot win a league with average goalkeepers.

I dont know how others feel but to me in the Gigi has always been the best GK in the world, since he moved to Juve. The only other GK that can challenge him is Iker Casillas.
There are a few GKs that displays top-class performance but they do it in patches of 2-3 years only, while Gigi and Casillas has been the top two for the last 10 years i think. The GKs in this class are Julio Cesar, Edwin van der Sar and Peter Cech. And even the gap between this group and Gigi&Casillas is very huge.

I have always admire this guy from day 1 he joined Juve.I would rate him 2nd best to Peter Schmeichel in terms of command of the team mates and leadership.Heck, even Cannavaro had so much respect of him.
Hail Gigi Buffon,Italy's finest keeper for quite some time now..

Shay Given has over the past decade and more shown he is a quality goalkeeper and must surely be ranked along the best in the world.

As much as i am a Milan fan,it goes without a single doubt that Gigi Buffon is the best in the business. Yes, every player has ups and downs, but there is no keeper who has been as consistent as Gigi since he moved to Juve. There is no way one can even talk about Iker when Gigi is there. Hope we can get a better keeper at Milan as well.....maybe Gigi!!!!!!

Gigi is for sure up there with Iker Casillas, no doubt. Always flawless and rising to the occasssion at every turn. Truly the world's best 2 keepers.

Umm, NO! Juve won't be 'flying high' without Buffon! He is a beast...and to top it off, he's in form.

with gigi & iker in goal its a little wonder that the current world & european champions are their national teams, respectively. as a fan of both & all of their teams, i hope both of juve & real achieve the same success domestically..and hopefully battle it out for the ucl!

i won't disagree that Buffon with out a doubt is a legend and a champion but to answer you question we shall ask our self's would Juventus have won if Manninger was on the goal?????
In my opinion yes they would they may have taken one or two more gals but they would have won.

Buffon is the best,Ike cannot be compared to Buff

The keepers in the world that are right now leading are the following.
1. Gigi Buffon
2. Casillas
3. Cesar
4. Van Der Sar
5. Cech
6.Howard
Buffon is the only keeper to win the World Cup and being named Keeper of the year more than once. He is probably going to be the best keeper to ever play for Azzurri since Dino Zoff. I would say Casillas but he has to win the World Cup help his resume. Julio Cesar, he is beginning to make a case. These top 6 keepers are all the best for their countries and have been winners at the club level.
