Another win, and against another top team too. After AC Milan, it's Lazio's time to lose against Inter, who have won the last seven games in Serie A; still six points from the top but Nerazzurri now have only three teams above: Juventus 41, AC Milan 40, Udinese 38.

With Milito back to his usual scoring standards and Sneijder fresh, motivated and inspired again, apparently everything looks promising for Inter. To be honest, the Scudetto remains a mirage.

It’s simple maths. With three teams ahead, rather than just one, Inter need to keep winning all their games, which it is not credible. The lack of rotation means this team is going to face huge problems in the next few weeks.

The Lazio game can be seen as a metaphor of Ranieri's policy: postponing the inevitable. Inter's coach decided to replace Thiago Motta in the most complicated way: moving Zanetti alongside Cambiasso, and placing Alvarez and Nagatomo on the flanks. No wonder Inter lacked order and ideas in centre midfield. If you don't start with Poli in that position in a situation like this, probably you never will. And this explicit non vote of confidence in youngsters - who seem only allowed to play in Coppa Italia - will harm Inter's chances in three weeks time, when the Champions League restarts and the forgotten players like Ranocchia, Obi, Coutinho, Castaignos, Zarate (if he stays...) could suddenly become necessary. Vital but not trusted and these guys know.

Lazio played better than Inter for most of the first half, when Tommaso Rocchi beat Lucio and Samuel twice. Two shots: one post and one goal for Lazio's skipper, the kind of player who always knows where the goal is. Inter's equaliser came from Diego Milito's intuition: the Argentinian striker created a chance out of nothing, dictating a one-two to Alvarez, who did his part in giving the ball back to the Prince, who made no mistake in front of Marchetti and notched his fourth goal in the last four games.

A 1-1 draw at half time was a generous score for Inter. In the second half the two coaches’ choices made the difference: Reja inexplicably left out Hernanes (one the most lucid with Ledesma) in favour of Matuzalem, whereas Ranieri replaced Alvarez and Chivu with Sneijder and Obi, and finally Inter's shape looked more coherent and logic. The best things of the second half came from Sneijder but the winning goal was marked by Pazzini at the minute 63, who lobbed Marchetti after a Lucio header.

At the end of the game Reja said: "That goal should have been disallowed, because Pazzini was clearly offside". Clearly is a big word. Only TV cameras' reply showed that Pazzini's boot (yes, the boot...) wasn't on side. Two minutes later, Klose combined with Rocchi to imitate Milito-Alvarez's one-two but this time the outcome was different as the German's shot was easily blocked by Julio Cesar.

At the end of the match Claudio Ranieri said: "The only thing I can take from this game is the result, we couldn't even put three passes together". He should take even some notes: 1. Maicon and Alvarez can't play on the same side: they give their best when attacking, asked to provide cover to each other means they go forward less and less freely (Maicon & Zanetti is still the best option on the right). 2. On the left the Chivu-Nagatomo pair is a more plausible choice but simply less effective than Nagatomo-Obi, as the introduction of the young Nigerian proved later. 3. In 45 minutes Sneijder not only showed far more than Alvarez in the last four games [it wasn't so hard] but he also looked more brilliant and focused than in the first part of the season. A start is due now.

An apt analysis! Inter have to keep on winning but with the same team (more or less) playing every week, the title may be a mirage. Inter's problems remain. Inter lacked fluency in the first half. We were only marginally better in the second. The only positives are that Milito seems to be back to his clinical self and Sneijder's return.

I have to say that Alvarez and Maicon on the same side does not make sense, since they are the ones providing Pazzini and Milito with assists. In my opinion, I would have put Faraoni in place of Cambiasso in the center. That way they would someone who is a little more creative than Cambiasso. It is necessary for Ranieri to use the youngsters when all else fails. Why not go back to the Inter lineup that crushed Parma in the first game of the year? Ranieri must get this straightened out before Napoli.

Not having Motta in the midfield can prove how important he is at this stage for Inter (Gianni he was suspended due to cards). Alvarez didn't have a good game and perhaps Ranieri's new change of players spots was the reason. We didn't look as sharp, but Ranieri tried to move too many players around and perhaps that was part of the reason?
Offside goal was not offside, it seems that there was nothing else to whine about, so Lazio coach picked on Pazzini's goal. Pato and Juve had much worse goals under "Offside" allowed all season that no one talks about.

I agree with the article. Though we must realize that the past week - Derby + Coppa (Thursday)+ Lazio is one of the tougher weeks our squad will face.

Does anyone know why we did not start with Poli? At his young age, I'm sure he can handle playing Thursday and Sunday. Especially with Motta suspended, I thought Poli was almost certain. Obi did quite well when he came on.

I'm concerned about Chivu's inclusion: When Chivu plays in defense, unless he has a slightly defensive minded winger/midfielder playing in front of him, he is a liability. Chivu's lack of pace is telling and he cannot play a full game, why start with him?

Anyway a win is a win. I hope we see a freshened up line up against Lecce.

Just an off day. It happens, but great to win when it does especially against one of the top teams. The main issue solved is the return of confidence of the stikers, the hardest place to play on the field. The offside claim is a joke. The naked eye of the assistant referee cannot be expected to work that one out it was so close and the advantage was given to the offensive team.

Great post... and a good win. I know we didn't look good but we have to be able to grind out results like this, so i'll take it.

I really really like alvarez but we have to play sneijder. His vision and long passing and style is just ridic... just a different class. Milito has been working his tail off to create goals, but we can't really live with that. Playing alvarez out wide doesn't seem to suit us. Pazzini is only as good as his service and I agree that without motta in there, we struggle to create out of the midfield.

It seems in the past few weeks all our goals come from the middle. Even when we get goals from crosses from the side, its usually from alvarez who has drifted out to the wing after some link up play in the middle. I just don't think we have the players to play out wide.

A healthy sneijder has got to start, which then begs the question... what do we do with alvarez? I think in the next few weeks as the schedule gets intense, we'll be able to give everyone PT

You are too hard on Alvarez. In the Lazio game he started on the left midfield, then right midfield, then drifted to middle to provide the assist. He constantly tracked back to help out the defence. His passing was not as good as Motta's, but still more accurate and with purpose than the rest of the team.

Sneijder on the other hand had both a good and bad game. His going forward looked great, with his excellent killer passes and ranged strikes. But he didn't look to control the game when we had the lead, often rushing the ball forward only to give the ball away.

We really need to start playing youngsters. It feels like Serie A managers always rely on old guard players, like Zanetti, Nesta, Pirlo, and Di Natale. Good as they may be, it seems as though usually stick with their seniors for longer, while Milan and Juventus see that taking a page from La Liga, and bolstering their young stars greatly has instant effects. Look at Muniain, Thiago, Callejon. These players were played regularly at club with ample reinforcement, and it paid high dividends. Inter needs to do this with Alvarez, Poli, Castiganos, and other gifted youngsters, and give them chances.

@ Someone who despises Inter. This blog is open to everybody who wants to talk about Inter, football, tactics, etc. without insulting like you did. No one else does it here and I have left your comment only to say that from now on comments like this will be deleted.
@ Sia. I know Thiago Motta was suspended, I never wrote it was a tactical choice to leave him out. However, thanks for reminding it, maybe in my article it wasn't so clear.

Nagatomo has played brilliantly when he starts at left back so I think it is a mistake to move him from that position, even if there is a lack of wingers on the squad. Sneijder looked in good form, the other players will just have to adjust to his urgency in attack.

Posted by Parth on 01/24/2012

Scoring as they may, but we cant play Milito-Pazzini every game. One game we can try playing Alvarez and Sneijder together with one of the strikers, most probably Milito.
And Zanetti-Maicon on right flank is spot on. Should not be tampered with really.

Posted by Nathan on 01/24/2012

A fine summary Gianni, and I am inclined to agree that the Scudetto seems unlikely. With that said, I am sure that you recall writing that Inter would never catch Lazio.

One never knows. Juve, Milan, and Udinese have all yet to endure the inevitable stretch of matches where nothing goes their way.

Re: Pazzini's goal. The Lazio defense had two choices. 1) Let Lucio's header bounce and hope Pazzini is called offside. 2) Boot the ball into the stands. They actually chose the prototypical Serie A option: Choose 1 and complain about the referee after the match.

Posted by Varun on 01/24/2012

Gianni - Good analysis of the game, I actually edit the highlights for all Serie A games and even after looking at the Pazzini call from all different angles, it was apparent that it was too close to call.

I would like to get your take on Obi. I think he is a waste on the left as his final ball just doesn't have any kind of precision, instead I reckon if Ranieri plays him in the Motta role, where he is meant to play short, quick passes than long ones into the box, he could actually thrive more.

If Motta does leave for PSG, do you think Poli is ready to step up to that level? He wasn't bad against Genoa and look forward to seeing him v Napoli.

Finally, call me a foolish optimist, but while I personally think the Scudetto would be very difficult, we just need a couple of slipups from the top teams like Juve-Udine this week to really get in there. Besides, wouldn't it be ironic if after 10 years from that day in May 2002, we were to win a Scudetto at the Olimpico on the final day.

Posted by Aflack on 01/24/2012

@Varun

Obi has performed consistently well in his left midfield role. I don't see why he should be deployed elsewhere.

You underestimated Motta's passing range. He possesses an uncommon mix of skills, being good at defending and excellent at distributing the ball, both short and long. He can switch the ball from one side to another with precision. None of our midfield options can move the ball around as accurately and effectively as Motta.

Poli has impressed me, but I don't see him as a Motta-like midfielder. He just does not have the same passing ability.

A win is a win!

Agreed that Chivu is a liability on defense. There is no way to get out of starting Zanetti he's captain and has been at the club for a long time but I really liked what I saw of him at left back a couple of seasons ago. I feel like this is the solution to the left back problem and the way to get Chivu off the starting 11. This creates a lot more space in the midfield for young players and great ones like Sneijder. Besides this great stuff out of Inter coming out of the winter break. FORZA INTER!!!

Posted by Gianni on 01/25/2012

@ Varun. In a 4-4-2 formation I'd play Obi in the middle combined with a playmaker, as I prefer orthodox wingers in this scheme. If playing with the diamond (as Inter did in the 2nd half against Lazio) centre-left is his position. Obi has the potential to become a player a la Edgar Davids (Juventus or Ajax's version, certainly not Inter's), and I'd love to see him playing more.
Poli is not like Motta but being more dynamic doesn't mean he can't be a playmaker, as he proved at Sampdoria. He's another one who should be given more playing time in my opinion.

Watching the Lecce game now..
Less than 1 minute of extra time.
I am so disappointed & furious with Ranieri!!!

Well, the final whistle has just been blown by the referee.

Damn you Ranieri!
How could we lose again Lecce??
Why take out Sneidjer at half time?
Why don't take out Obi and let Sneidjer play with Alvarez? We need goals dammit.

And when things become worse, you bring in the useless Zarate. Which fare even worse than Obi.

This lost is totally unacceptable.
Its their first win at home this season!

Lecce play very defensively and you don't react quickly and appropriately to counter their tactic.

The lost to Napoli was a warning of things to come and still you stick with the same players who many are obviously exhausted. Just look at the game, by the 80th minutes almost all Inter players cannot run anymore.

Why continue shunning out young players?
And these reports about loaning out Coutinho?

Hey Ranieri.. why don't you loan out Poli, Ranocchia & Castaignos too then?
