After my calls for consistency Hull City finally delivered, producing a brilliant battling performance against Manchester City to win their first game in 11. That stat is misleading really, as the players have steadily improved since Christmas, nicking draws against Spurs and Chelsea, and culminating in a terrific 2-1 win against the world’s richest club.
This was another excellent team performance, with the Tigers simply wanting the result more than the visitors’ mercenaries. Altidore and Vennegoor worried the dodgy looking back four from the first minute, Boateng and Cairney both continued their excellent form, and the back four put in another terrific effort, with the full-backs this time matching the centre-halves’ performance.
It was terrific to see Altidore and Boateng score their first goals in Hull City shirts, particularly for the American, who finished a neat move with a lovely finish. You could sense the relief lift from the KC and the joy the crowd felt for Altidore, who has been performing really well recently and deserved a goal. Jozy is now starting to look the part. He’s become a little more streetwise, and knows how to use his power and strength in the right way. His partnership with Big Jan is now starting to look very effective, and hopefully the pair can score the goals to keep City up.
Jozy’s finish was outshone by Boateng’s bullet however. What a terrific strike by the Dutchman on his wrong foot, off balance. His shooting has been always powerful, if not accurate, but a Boateng screamer was bound to come sooner rather than later. A bit like Ashbee, if you keep having a dig one will go in, and that was probably his one for the season.
It’s brilliant to see City actually getting better as the season progresses, and the major significance for me is that this come run has come without Bullard, who should give the team a further boost when he returns to the side. A fully fit Zaki will also boost the side and give Brown more options up front, and if City can avoid any more injuries, their season could really start to look up.
Forty points is usually looked at for the mark of safety, meaning the Tigers need another 16 to reach safety. That’s four wins and a handful of draws, and suddenly the task isn’t looking as daunting as it once did.
Obviously City need to win some home games, but for me the away form has to improve. We still haven’t won away from home yet this season, and a couple of wins on the road would really help the situation and propel the Tigers away from the relegation battle.
Ewood Park would be a good place to pinch one of these wins on Wednesday night. It will be very different to the Man City game. Blackburn will be direct, physical and organised, and City will have to win the physical battle before they can win the football battle. It should be a very interesting, if not entertaining game.
Can City keep their run of form going? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers,
TC

Wacholder behave your self mate. Fagan is 100% better than Mendy. No skill you must have been watching differant games to me this season.

Jozy finally scored!!! With him and Jan firing on all cylinders Hull will have a great chance to stay up.

I disagree about Fagan. Perhaps wide right is the best place for him to use his pace and join the attack, rather than BE the attack. He did have moments against Man City in that role. He also tracked back a few times to help the defense. Let's let this eleven have a few more goes at it, to see if we can actually be consistent. Let's win this week's game for starters, to get that away form monkey off our backs.

Wacholder: Did you watch the Man City game? Time and time again he beat Wayne Bridge for pace down the right. Sure at one instance he should have crossed the ball instead of shooting at the tight angle that he did, but none the less, I thought he had a productive game. Your not going to get a world beater with Fagan or a guy who will score 10 goals a season, but you will always get 100% from a guy who will run down lost causes and plays with passion. I think you are being overly critical saying he has no skill and all that. He is in the premier league for a reason. Also he'll get in the face of the opponent and wind them up. I loved seeing him getting in the face of Bellamy. With Mendy you get a different approach to the game. Yes there are times where Mendy is the right guy to have out there, but for the most part, most games (such as the Man City game) Fagan is the perfect player to have on the pitch. I agree with Burnsey from BBC Radio Humberside, Fagan should start every game.

I agree with Tom, Hull City have been steadily improving and PB seems to have got the balance of the team on the pitch right at last. Some seem to think that this is just an attitude inspired by playing the bigger teams, I suppose we'll see the truth of that at Ewood Park. With confidence high and performances being rewarded with results, something that didn't happen at this point last season, I think we'll acheive safety. In fact 16th place would do for me!

Outstanding.
Tigers need 12 points- 40 would definately keep us up- I feel 36 will keep us up this season- can't see Burnley or Wolves getting beyond that. West Ham may even struggle to get there.
3 wins (Burnley(H), Blackburn (A) and one other) plus results against some other sides in and around- maybe even all 3 in some that we may not think about should keep us up.. The games we have left are winnable (or at least ones we can get points from) as long as we play as we have done in the last 2 games.

This was not Jozy's first goal for Hull, as he scored in the Carling Cup. It was his first league goal for the Tigers. Nitpicky maybe, but the truth nonetheless.

Hey TC, no love for me for totally predicting Jozy to get his 1st ever prem league goal? No one could have predicted Boateng's strike though, that was increadible.
2 points to make, Fagan isn't the most skillful player in the world, but he works hard and has good pace, so he will do for now. I think better then Mendy, I, personally, would like to see Geo on the right when he comes back. I think he could do a great job as a winger.
Also, This road match to Ewood Park will be difficult, Blackburn play very well at home, they have won their last 2 at home, and only lost 1 in their last 11 home games, and it was to Tottenham. Also, they may be looking to take out frustration of an awful appearance over the weekend when they lost 3-0 to Stoke. I'll be happy with a draw, where we should get a win away is Upton Park on the 20th.

About
Welcome to my new blog. I've been watching Hull City for over ten years now, and have seen the club rise from a lower league laughing stock, locked out of their own ground, to Premier League upstarts turning over Arsenal at the Emirates. Hopefully you'll find my views on the Tigers interesting, so feel free to join the debate. Come on you Hull! |
