Well, what a shambles that was. A huge, if not must-win game, and City come up short thanks to some horrible defensive frailties, allowing Wolves to come from behind twice to take a point in a game that City should have won handily.
So what went wrong? The unlikely combination of Altidore and Big Jan caused Wolves problems, and we looked to genuinely carry a goal threat for much of the game, so why did we look so nervy at the back?
Zayatte wasn’t playing, which obviously didn’t help. Mouyokolo looked reasonably solid in his first chance to really shine at centre-half this season, but Anthony Gardner looked particularly shaky in his long-time defensive partner’s absence. The Tigers captain was largely at fault for both Wolves goals; first with a comedically sliced own goal, and then dithering on the ball, before a poor clearance which eventually led to the visitor’s second equaliser.
It may have been coincidence. Gardner has been consistently solid for several months now, and so was entitled to have a bad day at the office. He wasn’t helped by his full back either, who both had error-strewn games that placed the defence under unnecessary strain on too many occasions.
One bright spot came in the appearance of Amir Zaki, who looked lively on his Tigers debut. While perhaps a little off the pace, he looked to have the technique, strength and quality to cause other teams problems in the remainder of the season. If Brown can keep the Egyptian’s head in the right place, then City will truly have an asset at a crucial point in the relegation battle.
So how are we now shaping up for the battle? The only players to have left in today’s window were those who were surplus to requirements, and the club’s financial situation was not so dire as to necessitate Stephen Hunt’s departure to Wolves (thank the lord). Adam Pearson’s refusal of ANOTHER bid for the Irishman was a statement of intent – selling Hunt would have been tantamount to suicide.
If the defensive problems can be ironed out (which as former defender Phil Brown must be mortified by), then City can go into the next two games with at least a hope of getting some points. Home games against Chelsea and then Man City will be tough, but both of the big-spending outfits have looked vulnerable at times this season, and City will feel they could secure at least one draw from the two encounters.
I’d expect Brown to keep it tight, possibly playing a 4-5-1 formation against the league leaders on Wednesday night. These tactics worked well at Stamford Bridge in the season opener, and City were just minutes away from a hard-fought point before Drogba’s late winner.
Man City should present more chances for City to score on Saturday, so I’d like to see Brown be a little more adventurous, and go 4-4-2 with real width. It should make for an exciting game, with two games that really represent a free hit for City, with any points against these two big-hitters.
Do City have any chance of getting points this week? What do you think?
Cheers,
TC

i agree, very poor defence against wolves, infact.. the only two positives to come out of that game was that hunt pretty much gave a massive finger to wolves by taking that pen, and also the fact wolves managed to play worse than us (dispite our defencive antics)which must be a little light in a very dark tunnel.. i suppose amr looked pretty sharp aswell, id liek to see him start tomorro against chelsea. city have a chance of getting points, brown needs to talk some common sence into his defence, aswell as learning what to actualy do in pressure situations. its a fustrating life being a tiger, however i think if we can organise our defencive strategies for chelsea and man city respectivly we can get something. 4-5-1 against chelsea they are too good to give time on the ball in midfield, thel punish us. and 4-4-2 for man city, lets put some pressure on these millionares.. but we shall see...

Thanks for the blog, TC, hey Man Utd isn't worth writing about???
I fault Brown though, TC, not the defense. I mean look, they were already without Zayatte, whose emergence as a solid defender is the only reason we're not on 60 goals against right now.
Then, Wolves had an extra midfielder, and one of our midfielders was Cairney. People are waxing about him, but he did nothing special for me.
But even that's fine, I'm not complaining about starting 4-4-2, it worked. But once you go up 2-1, TC, in my mind you have GOT to sub off an attacker to help out a defense that is missing the stalwart Zayatte, has an off-his-game Gardner, a back on a yellow, and McShane who was left in the dust all day long.
No way Wolves get a goal on us if we had an extra defensive-minded player on the pitch.
I'd've subbed Kilbane for Dawson to ensure 11 men, Barmby or if hurt Garcia for JVoH, and then bring on a fresh Zaki for Jozy. We'd have two more points right now and be out of the zone.

liking the blog tom, keep up the good work.
zaki looked a bit off the pace, hopefully that will come with match practise. jozy had his best game yet, and should have slotted away his chance but if he gives that amount of effort every game he will retain some respect.
pretty happy with the transfer window, avoided another debacle a la turner by rejecting mad mick's advances and managed to ship out a few players who shouldnt have ever pulled on the black and amber. hope we can move on folan and marney in the loan window however.
on a final note, think we are more likely to get something from man city than chelski. i think the boys from stamford bridge will tear us a new one if we leave ourselves exposed like we did v wolves. man city have always looked frail against decent counter attacking, and playing on the wings should help us no doubt.
lets hope so anyways, because we needed all 3 points.
cant wait for your next blog mate

Tom,
Another game where I could only watch highlights after the fact, but it looked like Altidore + Vennegoor worked fairly well. Altidore getting an assist and drawing the penalty is encouraging to me as a USMNT fan. I didn't notice Zaki but it does seem positive for Hull to have all three of those players looking active.
Hull could snare a point or two this week, but certainly it will be tougher to earn a pair of draws vs. Chelsea and Man City than it would have been to net the two points by holding off Wolves. They can't afford mistakes in back, and will have to find a way to generate offense as well.
It's disappointing to see dropped points at home; with Blackburn and West Ham trips ahead there are points to be had, but it will not be easy on the road.

GO HULL!! 1-1 Draw Against Chelsea, huge victory! The fact that we were up 1-0 gave me false hope and made the draw a little less sweet but I would have given the world for a draw before the game!
GO HULL!

About
Welcome to my new blog. I've been watching Hull City for over ten years now, and have seen the club rise from a lower league laughing stock, locked out of their own ground, to Premier League upstarts turning over Arsenal at the Emirates. Hopefully you'll find my views on the Tigers interesting, so feel free to join the debate. Come on you Hull! |
