Hull City
Posted by Tom Collins on 12/22/2009

There are far more disheartening ways to lose three-nil than Hull City’s defeat to Arsenal on Saturday night. The tigers were well beaten in the end, with a slick Arsenal team ripping City apart towards the end of the game, but much of the encounter was a tight, if slightly dull affair, as City defended in numbers and frustrated the Gunners.

Phil Brown fielded a 4-5-1 formation again, and in many ways it worked, as City packed the midfield, denying their hosts space in the final third of the pitch. Arsenal’s talented, but moody team grew more frustrated as the half wore on, Samir Nasri highlighting the home side’s rancour with a petulant trod on Richard Garcia’s foot. The Aussie’s reaction didn’t do him any favours either. I don’t like to see people trying to get others a red card, and the ref handled that situation well.

He didn’t cut the mustard moments later, when Steve Bennet gave Arsenal a soft free kick, which was converted right on half time, undoing all the Tigers’ good work in the first 45. To their credit, City came out fighting, getting a very soft penalty, on which the game changed. I’ve always thought one of the biggest swings in momentum in a game of football usually comes when a team misses a penalty, and that duly occurred with Geo’s miss at the Emirates.

I wasn’t so bothered about the penalty miss (even though it was poorly struck). What annoyed me more was the witless attempt at converting the rebound, as Stephen Hunt ploughed into Geo as the Brazilian was about to have a free header at goal. Arsenal went up the other end, scored a good goal, and killed of the game.

So what to make of it? Lots of positives, for a start. The best performance since Man City away, really good individual performances from Zayatte particularly, Garcia, McShane and Hunt. Some City fans have been critical in the wake of Saturday’s defeat. I wouldn’t have picked that starting XI myself, but it worked quite well and my selection would have involved Olofinjana, who was shocking when he came on.

Craig Fagan had a curious game, working really hard in a difficult lone striker role, but without enough quality when he did get the ball. You could see Brown’s thinking, getting the pacy Fagan to work the channel s, providing a release ball when City found themselves under pressure. Unfortunately several good breakaway chances we spoiled by a bad touch or lack of vision from the Brummie, and maybe Ghilas could have done a better job in the role. Altidore has never looked comfortable up front on his own, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t start on Sunday alongside a speedy partner.

So, what now? A tough game on the horizon at the weekend, against a Manchester United team who will no doubt be hurting after a thumping at Fulham. Then again, without a recognised fit defence, they could be there for the taking. Whatever, I hope to see City playing at full tilt, on the front foot in a 4-4-2 formation in an attempt to ignite the crowd, and put the champions, and more pertinently, their under-fire defence under pressure. It should be a great occasion at a sold out KC, and hopefully City can nick something, before a monstrously huge game at Bolton on the Tuesday night.

Do City have any chance on Sunday? I’d love to hear your questions/thoughts.

Merry Christmas
TC.

Same old crap. "We wuz murdered 10-0 but there are POSITIVES." Positives ? Rubbish. An apologist for poor management and a poor display. You will be telling us next that PB is manager of the year. And how many points have we gathered over the last 12 months or so ? How many do you expect for the rest of the season ? Headless chickens.

Tom,

I'll admit I never followed Hull until they signed Altidore this summer, but since then I've been keeping close tabs on the team, and given that they rarely make it to American TV, your posts are a great insight.

Do you know why Altidore was left out of the squad vs. Arsenal? It does seem that Brown's tactics worked fairly well, as you said, but I was surprised that Jozy didn't even make the bench after what's seemed like a solid run of games for him.

I do think City can put up a fight against Manchester United, but they'll have to play aggressively and try for the opening goal against the thin defense of the Red Devils. The fact that Fulham took it to Man U last week means they'll be looking to take out frustrations - they're a wounded beast now - so Hull will have to capitalize on chances and play a mistake-free game. Hopefully they can get the job done to start off a big 3-fixture week!

Way to stay positive, TC, don't go over to the dark side.

Seems you're seeing the merits of 4-5-1 as well. It worked to perfection, and certainly a pen miss can't be held against PB, shoulda been 1-1.

I agree Olofinjana was disappointing, but our midfield in general played well.

Much as I like to see Altidore in the game (or at least on the bench), Fagan has showed me something of late. Handball vs. Sunderland aside, in the last three games, he's been right at the center of our three best scoring chances--woodwork at Villa, in alone vs. Blackburn (due credit to Boateng...), and against Arsenal he draws a PK which in my mind is as good as scoring a goal.

I would be surprised if Altidore and Fagan aren't up top of a 4-4-2 against United. Can't wait.

One thing. I was disappointed that City tried to start a fight or whatever before that free kick. Arsenal were flat, and I think the last thing you want to do there is wake up the sleeping giant. Keep your composure, boys

I agree with some of your comments .i dont think Garcia should have hammed it up as he did.He would have got more sympathy if he hadnt writhed about so much.I am not a aggressive person but Arsenal have always irritated me.I could me more explicit but you know what i mean.
I think v Man U it is a season defining game we have to go full out.Put Alltidore and JVOH upfront and play Ghlias.Have Cairney on the bench .I see with amusement City have asked the Manu Hull based fans to show some commonsense if sat in the home end by not displayingMan U shirts.Well guess what they should not even be allowed in the homeend taking City fans places.I dont care about Man U fans being at the match but not at the expspense of City.
Go Tigers and Happy Christmas.

**Off Topic Post**
As a fairly new Premiership fan.. WHY THE HECK do they call different teams by some crazy names? I mean how the heck am I supposed to know that the Toffees or whatever are Everton? Or that Ipswich is some team? Why not just call them by their name? Is that their actual mascot or some long forgotten tradition? IF so can someone send me a link of team names?

Thanks and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

AUTHOR-NAME-HERE Welcome to my new blog. I've been watching Hull City for over ten years now, and have seen the club rise from a lower league laughing stock, locked out of their own ground, to Premier League upstarts turning over Arsenal at the Emirates. Hopefully you'll find my views on the Tigers interesting, so feel free to join the debate. Come on you Hull!
