Hull City
Posted by Tom Collins on 11/29/2009

What a week to be a city fan. On paper, two tough games cough up the glorious sum of four points. The first, a thrilling midweek victory against Everton, was followed by a battling point against man City’s multi-million assembled band of ‘stars’ thanks to Jimmy Bullard’s late penalty.

While City showed on Wednesday that they could win without their cockney talisman, Bullard’s return was still greeted with delight by the travelling fans, as part of a team that looked set up to ‘have a go’. I was expecting Phil Brown to field a more negative side, but the Tigers boss managed to incorporate both Geo and Bullard into a 4-4-2 formation, with Geo playing alongside the ever-improving Jozy Altidore.

It was a curious match, with Man City’s big names enjoying plenty of possession, without ever really looking like scoring. That was until just before half time of course, when Shaun Wright-Phillips scored with a deflected shot. It was a shame Gardner blotted his copybook with the deflection, as he’s been excellent this season. The shot was heading straight for Duke in the Tigers goal.

City carried on much the same in the second period; keeping Man City at bay without really threatening Shay Given’s goal, other than a terrific move with resulted in Garcia’s loft shot being cleared on the Line. It was at this point I though Brown was missing a trick, in that we weren’t really taking advantage of the huge amounts of space Man City were leaving in behind their back four. Wayne Bridge has been the Citizen’s weak link in the past month or so, so I’d have like to have seen Ghilas or Mendy on the pitch to test him out with their pace.

But whatever the tactics, City nicked a late point with a slightly dubious penalty. I initially though it was handball, but replays showed the referee had spotted a slight nudge on Venegoor of Hesselink. The celebrations after Bullard’s spot kick were fabulous, and the perfect way to draw a line under an incident that has been much overblown by lazy national journalists.

So, a fantastic display, and hugely encouraging signs for the rest of the season. If we can keep Bullard fit, we must have a great chance of staying up this year. There’s still a long way to go, and some tough fixtures on the immediate horizon. But if City can show that tenacity, heart and bravery when in possession, then the possibility of points coming against more of the bigger in the division cannot be discounted.

What do you think? Do you think City will cruise to safety? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers
TC

We must have a great chance of staying up?

You're not still worried about staying up are you? C'mon, TC, we're going to Europe.

You explain to me how a midfield that includes Hunt, Geo, and Bullard is going to get relegated. And our back four is solidifying, our last three goals being an og, a PK, and a deflection. I love it that Man City needs to get lucky to get a point from us.

Great column as always. Only complaint is that I thought Hunt deserved to be called out by name. And also that we didn't get two blog entries for each of City's games this week...

Penalty decision:
Toures hand can clearly be seen on the dutch strikers shoulder just as the cushioned header came in. Had the striker been able to move quickly towards the ball then stick out his foot in all likely hood the ball would have been nestling in the back of the net without the need for a penalty or last man Toure being sent off.

I haven't been on such an emotional roller coaster since The Smiths broke up! Just when it seemed we would forever supply the laughter for the Premiership money-spenders, we are just one win from middle o' the pack. You never start popping the champagne bottles regarding Hull City, but what a welcome change from the past, when usually November were terrible days and always the start of the Hull City Slide. It's been years that I've had a joyful Thanksgiving. Not this year. Go on you Tigers-- give 'em Hell!!!!

The past 3 games at the KC have been amongst the most entertaining that I've ever seen there. The spirit in the team at the moment is indominatable. On the penalty, the Man City player had his arms over Hessalink's shoulders and seemed to be pulling him down, if he wants to be so careless in the penalty area then his boss should accept the likely consequences, I certainly was a city fan!
Good blog by the way, enjoyed reading it!

Winning and drawing sure feels better than losing. I won't feel safe until HC gets a win or two on the road, though. The og's really need to stop as well. Go, Jimmy and company, and please stay healthy!

I know one thing: A win against Blackburn ten days from now is utterly vital, as I don't see many points coming from the surrounding games: at Villa, at Arsenal, vs Man United.

AUTHOR-NAME-HERE Welcome to my new blog. I've been watching Hull City for over ten years now, and have seen the club rise from a lower league laughing stock, locked out of their own ground, to Premier League upstarts turning over Arsenal at the Emirates. Hopefully you'll find my views on the Tigers interesting, so feel free to join the debate. Come on you Hull!
