The sigh of relief was palpable at around 4.55pm at the KC Stadium on Saturday. A much-needed win was Hull City’s, after a battling performance giving the home side a 2-1 win against Wigan.
The biggest sigh surely came from Phil Brown. The Tigers boss has received more than his fair share of criticism in recent weeks, with a section of the City support calling for the manager’s head. Paul Duffen publicly backed the manager, before questioning the sanity of Hull City’s fans. Good PR Mr Duffen.
So, a tumultuous week for the Tigers manager. But after delighting the national media with tales of rescuing a potential suicide victim, Brownie took a risk of his own, selecting another new captain in Nick Barmby, and playing Kamil Zayatte in a midfield holding role. The new formation worked well, and Zayatte offered both protection to the back four, and a physical presence in both penalty areas, as well as crafting the winning goal for the excellent Geovanni.
It’s been impossible not to feel sorry for the manager this week, and Saturday’s result will be a massive fillip to him and the backroom staff. With an international break approaching, another poor showing would have left Brown facing two weeks of increased pressure. At least now he can top up his tan for a few days and take a few well deserved days off.
This wasn’t a classic performance, but as Brown had mooted mid week, City went back to the drawing board, replicating the battling, hard-fought and high-tempo performances of late 2008. As I mentioned last week, to compete at this level, City have to fight for 90 minutes, as a bare minimum. That they did, hustling a poor Wigan side out of their rhythm, and gradually imposing their will on the visitors. A couple of half chances were created here and there, but City weren’t really opening Wigan up.
It was more an attitude change, and an acknowledgement that effort and commitment was the way to get our season going. Barmby acted as Brown’s cheerleader on the pitch, leading by example as captain. An early example came when the diminutive midfielder sprinted 30 yards to smash into a Latic. Not the most laudable action by a footballer of all time, but the East stand crowd (myself included) erupted; a marker was set down and City’s pace of play visibly quickened. Every Tigers player was at full tilt for the majority of the game. Special mention must be made to Geovanni, whose workrate was magnificent, and fully deserved his goal. Dean Marney also had his best game in a City shirt for some time, reminding us that at his best his engine and workrate can really impact upon a Premier League game.
The defence also showed much improvement, looking solid, if not totally secure. I’m still to be convinced that Sonko is our best option, but Kevin Kilbane did well. Credit must go to Zayatte though, who did a great job in breaking up play around the area, and protected the back four far better than others have done in that position.
Is that it then? Have we cracked it? Err, not yet. Just as it is unfair to criticise too much after defeat, it’s not advisable to get too carried away after a victory, as craved as it was. But at least Saturday’s game showed that the whole squad understands what is needed. On paper, this squad is probably the third or fourth weakest in the league. The chances are City will be at the wrong end of the table for the majority of the season. This is not being negative, just realistic. If performances like Saturday can be replicated, than we have a chance of staying up, which I think most Tigers fans would settle for. There’ll be highs and lows, but with this level of application we’ve got every chance of staying up.

Do you agree? I’d love to hear your comments.

Spot on. As I've been griping since Liverpool, you have to do better than to commit your first foul in first half stoppage like they did at Anfield. Phil Brown had a quote that they needed to get back to being hard to play against. He obviously ordered some goon tactics. He should keep taking my advice.
Also, my plea for Hull to stick with the 4-5-1 was vindicated. I feel I should be on Duffen's payroll. We need that extra midfielder or we get run over. So question for TC's Q&A#3: Why are you such an advocate of the 4-4-2 for HC? Did Hull use it last year to significant effect? They certainly haven't this year.
But I'm more optimistic as to Hull's chances. In the next transfer window they'll spend some Turner cash, and the team will continue to learn how to play with each other. No reason we can't shoot for tenth place minimum this year. Who are the 16 teams who "on paper" are better than City??

I was at the game on saurday.I obviously enjoyed the victory- but still felt nervous that we cant keep a clean sheet. This a big problem. We looked more solid-but that could be more to do with the poor Wigan side.
I agree with your player assessments-esp Zayette- I thought he had his best game by far. Excellent- he looked every bit a PL player and very solid both going forward (what a run for Geo's goal!) and in defence- where he made several decent tackles.
However we need to sort out the defence- I have praised Dawson for his ability to lift his game- but he is beginning to get found out. Sonko is certainly in need of something- hopefully an injection of confidence from a fairly decent performance. McShane was OK- blocked and tackled very well- positionally was not 100% tho.
All in all solidity in defence and strength through the spine will help- but we need to stop conceding "soft" goals.
JvofH had a great game- will be better with more match sharpness. Lets get Jozy playing more

Tom thanks for your blog.I have been aCity supporter since 63.Moved to Melbourne in 87.Waggy was always the favourite for me. Anyway do you think Altidore is being eased in by Brown and would he and VOH be a good combination.I think Ghilas is a good contribution and a team player ,
.Will too much pressure be put on Jimmy Bullard or there again he is used to that. Isd Bernard Mebndy now out of the picture completely, from what i have seen he is class when he apllies himself. I know we willsurvive this year and hope the media lays off again with the negativity. Isthere anyone else in Australia/NewZealand toform a branch of City supporters.

Is Soccernet.com correct in saying that Wigan had 74% possession? Though I don't look to those stats for comfort, it seems a bit worrying. Of course Barmby should be captain, always. He is one of the few players to work his tail off EVERY match. We should be surprised when he's NOT captain. Aussie Steve-- well done to stick by the Tigers. You've suffered a long time but at least you got to see Waggy in action! 4-5-1 Steve? Bah, we should play 3-3-4!! The sweeper system needs to go the way of the dodo. Nowadays, defenders should be good enough one-on-one to mark any striker. Finally I can watch a match on ESPN against Fulham-- albeit at California 4 a.m.! I'm desperate to see our form and rant/rave with greater clarity to you, Tom. By the way, here's hoping Russia smash Germany....

So as an American Hull Fan it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to find games on ever.. The rare exception is when Fox Soccer Channel covers a game in which we play a high profile team.
I have a few questions for you Tom and/or other Hull Fans who have been able to watch them.
1. As an American I want to see Altidore getting playing time, he seems to create chances when he plays. So therefore why is he not playing right now?
2. What happened to Stephen Hunt that he isn't getting shots on goal anymore?
3. Can someone break down Bullard for me and explain to me why a guy that gets injured ever time he tries to play was somehow worth 5Million Pounds???
Thank you so much!

Dru, I live in America and haven't missed a single Hull game yet. The Wigan game was on Fox Soccer Channel, and Wigan isn't exactly a high-profile team.

It was great to see a victory. The team needed one and, hopefully, it'll do their confidence a world of good.
On the US soil comments. I live in the US as well and don't get Fox Soccer Channel. The only game I have seen in its entirety is the Chelsea contest. I recorded that one for safe-keeping. Another game will be on ESPN2 fairly soon. Check the fixtures/results page on soccernet, and you'll see it properly marked by the ESPN2 symbol. Maybe all of us can see that contest.

The Oct. 19 Fullham game will be on ESPN2 in the US.

About
Welcome to my new blog. I've been watching Hull City for over ten years now, and have seen the club rise from a lower league laughing stock, locked out of their own ground, to Premier League upstarts turning over Arsenal at the Emirates. Hopefully you'll find my views on the Tigers interesting, so feel free to join the debate. Come on you Hull! |
