The craggy sage of Govan, Sir Alex Ferguson no less, reminds the media every season after the Reds drop a couple of home points, 'it's a marathon not a sprint.'
It's been that and more for the Whites again this season, which remember saw us start back in competitive action last June. Our stumble v Odense means we won't be matching the 63 games the squad put in two years ago en route to Hamburg, and having passed up a real opportunity to take a tilt at the FA Cup, why, the players may find time hanging heavy as we move into spring. Here we are kicking our heels with a clean 14 day break for the senior pros, their first since early last summer.
Fans south of London should keep their eyes peeled for Brede trolling round the garden centre in search of spring bulbs, Clint will no doubt be treating his toddlers to the see-saw and swings of Wimbledon's fine parks, while JAR has plenty of time to let out his best suit before heading off for some internet dates following his latest divorce. Martin I happen to know is addicted to re-running his 'The Sopranos Best of box set' down in Epsom where he practices his Brooklyn growl in the hope of auditioning for a Dutch version of the hit U.S. show.
Only man putting in extra shifts is our on loan striker Pavel. Currently on the physio's couch for his sore ankle the Russian also wants to sharpen up his fitness before our next fixture. On the pitch he certainly hit the ground running. A fine strike into the top corner on debut, quick feet to adapt his position and then unerring accuracy. Unstoppable, a thing of beauty. One could name a few in the current squad who would have arrowed that ball out towards the Cottage...London's coldest snap of the winter had the Russian feeling right at home. He took to swimming early morning in the Serpentine until apprehended by park wardens, who caught him snaring ducks for his supper. "In my country this would be no problem. I like to roast meats and my wife and I planned a B-B-Q for Sunday. We don't consider -3 to be cold."
Pogrebnyak will surely settle to our quaint English ways, and love of animals, in no time. Hope he lets his boots do the talking on the 25th. Though he's still to be confronted by the number of his new colleagues who like to play 'hide and seek' at away matches. There were further plus points from the Stoke win. The Hughes-Hangeland act not just restored, as it was at Everton, but this time able to deal with all the aerial muscle the Potters could muster. What about man-of-the-match Moussa? We've known forever he's no finisher, the player himself admits that, but his undoubted ability to take the ball past opponents and his quick feints and darts suggest he could be Fulham's Modric if he really settles into that deeper role in MF.
Clearly the Russian's game is not that of Zamora. I think this may well be to Fulham's long term advantage. And if we don't get landed with a long injury list for the last dozen games it will be a) easier to drop Ruiz and b) chance a run out for Frei and Trotta. Poorest man in white Saturday was our Costa Rican. He's been tried on the wing to no effect, a real liability in midfield being too lightweight, can't jump and gives the ball away easily, and well, to date he's not really done enough consistently up front to hurt teams. At best for the rest of the season, should Pog really take off, may be using Bryan as a super sub.

Hughes revamps QPR training
Stoke, as I predicted in my preview, are finding the slog of fixtures catching up with them. They looked disjointed coming forward, almost toothless, in the first 45. Of course, Fulham's usual fallability of taking their foot off the gas meant they put us under for the second half. But once again, and as I suggested, Clint made the difference. Personally, I would have given him that goal, howler from Sorensen not to get it over the bar. And in a bizarre final few minutes Dempsey could have hit two more. The last kick of the match really should have found the net. Luckily we could smile, while letting out a huge sigh of relief at the whistle.
I didn't dwell on the defeat at Man City you may have noticed. While a loss was to be expected their pen while very 50-50 was so avoidable. Dembele underhit a simple 8 metre pass out to the wing that saw City spring the counter, then Senderos got himself into a bad position. The own goal was sheer bad luck, but we were predictably gutless at trying to come back at them. We really will have no excuses for not being fired up for the derby on the 25th. Martin take note, after the weekend results, we are in a very strong position. QPR will be as nervous as hell ahead of this one. We can really win the mind games here with the right mental approach, and we know the travelling fans will do their bit. I'd have the team sat down with the video of the 6-0 every day next week after training.
Scanning opinion since our latest win it would require a major meltdown from the Whites to see us dragged into the relegation fight. This has certainly been a stop start season of crazy highs - QPR, Wisla at home in the autumn, Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle, with some truly dreadful performances away, Wolves and Blackburn notably. When I reflect on our decade long stay in the top flight I repeatedly wonder how we survive, such is our predilection for losing to the dead men walking. Defeat at the Loft to di Canio's relegated Hammers in 2002, more recently a 0-1 home loss midweek to Hull with their last - and only - attack in stoppage time. The Hammers again at home last season ruining Christmas for all Fulham followers. Pray we don't see the 'dead cat bounce' from the rabble that is Wolves come March. Martin says the next 30 days define our run in. Rangers, Wolves, Aston Villa - these are very poor teams. And remind ourselves how satisfying it was for example to pull the rug from under Birmingham last May with a win at their place that pushed them over the edge.
Time for nice friendly Fulham to turn ruthless say I! That new blond boy up front looks the kinda guy who would wrestle a crocodile for fun or dig you out of a snow drift...Let's get serious, put more daylight between us and the bottom five, and end the season on a high. COYW!

Overall a satisfying performance though I agree we need to remedy our inability to keep the pressure on for 90 minutes. If this gets cured then I can easily see Fulham consistently being a top half contender.
Pavel- what a goal that was! To collect a shot from JAR at that speed, and to adjust his feet that quickly and then unleash a rocket to the top corner, was truly brilliant. A very wonderful start and barring that terrible tackle, a solid performance. Definitely agree with Ruiz; what a disappointment he’s been for the squad. Seems to be a theme with Fulham, doesn’t it? Spend 10 million pounds and receive nothing but hope from their big expenditures (AJ anyone?) Definitely agree that Demebele belongs in the MF and that Frei and Trotta should receive chances in games. Extremely glad to see the Hughes-Hange combination back in the heart of our defense though I question how long that’ll last since it took Senderos getting injured in order for order for Jol revert to the trusty duo.

I have appreciated your positivity in the last couple of weeks Phil. We all know this season has not gone as planned but we still have a lot to play for and could end this season with a good taste in our mouths. I still think Ruiz has some more to show us and is going to need til next fall to really show what he can do on the pitch. He is too lightweight and he does some ball watching but has a really good feel for the game and can show glimpses of real quality. I hope Pavel can stay fit and shows in the next month what a tough Russian can do in the prem. We need players like him when we go away and he could be that person to help us get another away win... i sure hope we can get one more of those this season! We really need to address the away form starting right now. COYW

I wouldn't be too hasty to condemn Ruiz, he's probably still adjusting to PL's unique style. You often find that some players struggle to have an impact in their first season for a new team. Obviously Zamora is a prime example. And maybe Ruiz is being played out of position? I really hope he comes through because I reckon with him, Dembele and Dempsey firing, Fulham's flair qualities will be immense.

Phil, your last two paragraphs are spot on! The chronic inability to polish off the stragglers is vexing indeed. Fulham often seem to play up to the quality of top opponents and a week later play down to the quality of much lesser lights. It's actually more aggravating and perplexing to me than the equally chronic inability to find away wins. Solving both would be fantastic--but I'll take solving the inconsistency if I have to choose between the two.
You summed it up perfectly in the line "time for nice friendly Fulham to turn ruthless". I couldn't agree more! It's high time to kick 'em when they're down, kick 'em again, and kick 'em one more time just to be sure. QPR, Wolves, and Villa are NOT quality sides. Fulham ain't perfect, but there's more quality and talent wearing the Fulham shirt than there is wearing any of those three. So show it, I say. In the immortal words of Alice Cooper, No More Mr. Nice Guy!
Blog Central: Wow, Alice gets a mention on the FFC blog, saw him play Wembley in '72. And we had Warren Zevon last week. Who next?

While part of me hated to see Zamora go, my tactical side hopes this helps pull Fulham further from the "kick it and get it" mentality. Like everyone, I'm hoping the midfield keeps improving and links up with Clint and Pog up front to actually create goals and possession so we're not outshot and out possessed so often.
Looking forward to watching what happens next, and let's have fun with QPR and move forward instead of surrounding their strikers with nine guys, hoping to get a lucky bounce on the counterattack and win 1-0...a 4-3 win is just as good in the record books!
Oh, and kudos to Stockdale for doing an admirable job while Schwarzer was off on injury. I think he'll do well long-term if he decides to stay after Mark leaves/retires.

Spot on again Phil. Being a long time Cubs fan too, I have lived with by the motto; "Wait til next season" but, this group of players are just too good for the results we are getting. Roy knew how to get the best out of them and I wonder where we would be right now if he had not wasted his time going to Liverpool. Even with Sparky we started to show signs of improvement but, Martin...it seems he really doesn't care what happens on the pitch. He can't make up his mind what formation he wants or what players to use. He used us to hold Ajax up for more money and they still let him go the next season. I wish we had never brought him to the Cottage. PLEASE Mr. chairman, bring Roy back and he will take this team to the top 6.

A couple weeks ago you mourned the departure of Bobby Zamora. This week Pavel finished with class an opportunity Zamora would have, as the song goes, launched to "Row Zed." Net gain, I'd say.

I will be absolutley livid if Jol applies the usual away tactics. We know we can score goals against QPR. Why turtle and scramble to defend for 90 minutes? Fulham have shown little prowess on the counterattack all season.
Unleash Pog, Clint, Dembele, and Frei for 90 minutes. I promise you will get goals and at the very least an entertaining match.

Phil, well done.
Again, to all who are calling for Martin's head, try to be patient. It is so early still, and I can't deal with another transition period.
Spot on with the analyses of Pog, Deuce, and the pair in the back (though Hughes looks like he forgot how to go up for a header at times).
One item that hasn't gotten the praise it deserved is the move to put Davies in the game and his subsequent performance. Right now I think he is a crucial member of this team because of his efforts defensively. In the same vein, Dembele's defense, when he focuses on it, is strong, and I totally agree that deep MF role would be great long term.
(in case people don't know this, to the tune of the Spanish song Guantanamera)

THERE'S ONLY ONE TEAM IN FULLLLHAM
THERE'S ONLY ONE TEAM IN FULLHAM!
Blog Central: Er, yes. Although sung every home game it's hardly Simon & Garfunkel. There can surely only be ONE song for our next fixture however. To the tune of Volare - "al Fayed, whoa -o oh, al Fayed whoa-o oh. He wants to be a Brit, and QPR are S**T, al Fayed whoa-o oh. Repeat ad nauseam

I have to say this last performance was the first time I have really agreed with what Jol was doing, from a tactical standpoint. Moving Dembele into a more central midfield position, where he can hold onto the ball long enough to look for the right pass, is one of the major issues that's gone unaddressed in the Fulham sides this year. We all agree that Murphy's getting older, skipper or not, but it seems like what he's losing in pace and sharpness he's trying to make up for in hard tackling. So why not--if you're not willing to shuffle him off the pitch--move him into a more defensive position and let a player with a little more skill on the ball take over the attacking midfield role. That frees up a wing for any number of options that are more suited to the position than Dembele ever was, and gives the potential for some actual distribution from the center of midfield, rather than Murphy just passing to no one in particular and then fouling the opposing player that intercepts it.
