But when you're playing the bottom club..? Hopes dashed again for an awayday knees up to put us in the party mood...and it wasn't fun to watch.
We are going to have to wait a while longer for another away win at Wolves - we last managed it in the top flight back in April 1962. The Black and White Army journeyed north in glorious sunshine and the mood was optimistic. The mood darkened the minute we heard BZ was starting frrom the bench - either a back problem or reported kick on the thigh in training meant Hughes didn't fancy starting our England talisman. What a pity.
It was rewind to the start of winter. We are a different team without him. Hughes didn't help his cause by preferring Davies over Kakuta. This negative selection was no doubt influenced by the need to double up on dangerman Jarvis down the left-flank. We should have been set up to win the game, and to that effect AJ simply had to start. Hughes got it wrong - and wasn't helped by some very ordinary performances from usually reliable figures. Dempsey (awful), Hughes (uncharacteristically), Sidwell (never imposed himself) and Murphy (no longer good enough).
Wolves were there for the taking. Stearman and Berra are extremely limited CB's, shirt tugs and obstruction an integral part of their game. McCarthy had a pair of makeshift full-backs on display, the keeper looked fragile, neither Doyle or Hunt fit, only Henry showed up well in midfield, and Fletcher is Championship class. Unfortunately for us, the biggest donkey on display was in white. Eidur I hope signed off his own farewell card with a pitiful performance. This former thoroughbred now belongs in the knacker's yard and should be put down.
My headline comes from the mouth of Alan Pardew after his side were most fortunate to escape from Blackpool with a point. Both the ref there and our own muppet on view at Molineux (Michael Oliver) had days to forget, the gaffer risking the wrath of the authorities for suggesting he 'wasn't up to the task' - this remember a game that came with a certain amount of pre-match 'feeling.'

So as a consequence Sparky gets sent to the naughty step for his reaction to the ludicrous booking of Hangeland. But when the manager needs three swings at a static water bottle before connecting, is it any wonder the first team are so abject when it comes to hitting the target?
Lord knows, it's hard enough watching Fulham away from home, but do we make life easy for the opposition or what? Before 'shooting from the lip' for your delectation post-match I do trawl reports and forums to regulate my impartiality meter before writing. Today I am confused. Well it is a bank holiday so maybe there's an excuse for a lot of lazy journalism out there.
I can't believe the writers calling this as a good game? One journo tops the lot by praising Eidur's first full game for us. Ye gods! I used Pardew's quote to remind myself this was another important point for the Whites on the road to survival, and I even predicted the draw in my preview. But I'm hyperventilating here just trying to be even-handed.
What left me feeling so desolate was the lack of quality in our play. Apart from selecting the wrong team, we must hold the management team responsible for this absurd possession game that goes only crab-like across the pitch. Every pass played in front of the opposition. A fetish with trying again and again to 'thread the needle' with that one final killer pass through a penalty area crammed with 18 sweating, jostling, lunging bodies. Why will nobody shoot from range?
Three of four excellent goals yesterdays at WHL scored from outside the box. Fulham's shooting on the day...diabolical. Dempsey misses a sitter that would have put us one up when dominating and Wolves would have buckled. You could see how nervy they were. Pace from the start through AJ and Kakuta would have killed them. Nil product from set pieces (learn from Blackpool here), while Dembele is now in real danger of turning back in on himself and disappearing up his own backside!
Please get it sorted for Bolton so I can breathe easy. Please stop picking up little spasms, head colds etc. Bobby Zamora - and can every highly-paid member of the first team respect the fact that we all pay loads of money to watch our side - home and away. Can we therefore also please have a little more 'blood and guts' over the final month of the season?
In the meantime, bye-bye to Wolves. Thanks for the 4 points and your efforts to hobble more skilful players in the Prem. You will not be missed.

Phil, another inspiring blog. You do like your moaning, you need to remember we are Fulham not Manchester United. It's a good point and we deserved more one of those days and look forward to Wednesday night maybe you should do the same.

Haven't a clue what Hughes was thinking - Zamora, AJ and Kakuta on the bench to start. This was a real opportunity to take full points and take the pressure off, and Hughes wasted it. Someone check his bank account 'cause something seems amiss; a little legal tender on a draw, eh Sparky?
I'll not even comment on our lack of width or poor central midfield play. It's a week-in-week-out complaint and there's nothing to be done about it 'til summer.
I think perhaps the only disagreement, Phil, is your assessment of Steven Fletcher. I think he's a decent striker, who on a better quality team could be a double-digit PL scorer. Wolves hack and stall tactics don't suit him. Plus he's had to share service with Doyle for most of the season. I'd love to have him at Fulham next season. He'd be a great backup for Zamora and perfect for cup competitions.
We were clearly the better side. Should've come away with all three points. Very tired of this away-day malaise. HUGHES OUT!

Are you even a fulham fan? Hats off, you watched the game, but all you seem to do is bitch and moan. The selection wasn't "negative," Hughes' decisions weren't "poor," and, most importantly, our play was definitely not "lacking quality." You, my friend, are a sh*itty, glory-hunting, fan. Hughes has been great. Go support Chelsea if an away tie doesn't do it for you.
To blog, you gotta be a real fan. Love the team. Love the club. Love the manager.
You are none of those. you bitch, you moan, and give weak one-sided analysis. Get out.

I agree on a lot of the points. I understand people saying that we ought to be happy with an away point and, typically, I would agree, but this game was different. We seemed to outclass the Wolves in every area, but still managed to take just 1 point. Its a game that we should have won, but didn't. And, its easy to find a couple simple things (starting Zamora or Kakuta) that would have put that 2nd goal in the back of the net.

So, Owen... apparently a 'real' fan must leave their brain at the door? F-O!
I support the CLUB. Teams (players) and managers come and go. Sometimes they're great; sometimes their sh*te. When their great I sound off about it and when their sh*te I sound off about that, also.
I thought Phil's analysis was harsh, but not wrong, and let's not forget that it's been a frustrating season for many of us. Hughes has been a poor manager for most of the season, and though we play more entertaining football than under Hodgson, there's something unreliable about Hughes tactical acumen and eye for talent, and I don't feel like we're safe in his hands.
And, I do support the lads, but I'll not let sentimentality stop me from criticizing a player for a poor day at the office. I'll never forget Danny Murphy's goal at Pompey in 2008 that kept us up, but that won't stop me from stating that he is an absolute liability now and needs to be replaced.
I detest being told how I should be a fan.

The second I saw the starting lineups, I ran to my computer and put money down on a draw. Was the lineup Hughes picked designed for anything else?
That has, and always will be, my main criticism for Hughesy--away from home, he is simply playing not to lose. With the attacking quality we've assembled, our team deserves more than that.
Why bring Kakuta over if not to use him? We're paying his wages this year so he can work our boys in practice? Wouldn't we want him to thrive here, and maybe get his heart stuck at Craven Cottage? If I'm him, I'm counting seconds until I'm back to Chelsea.
Lastly- Owen, it's not wrong to demand more from your club. Gone are the days of being satisfied with avoiding relegation. If we change our beliefs and our expectations as fans, hopefully the club can follow.

Good morning (or afternoon I should say)!!
Read your latest blog and totally agree. A real fan should always want better for their team...especially when you know they are capable of it. Speaking of, you know I love Clinton Drew Dempsey more than life itself, but I was very disgusted with his exit from the game. What was that all about? You can be upset with the manager that you've been removed, but it's not AJ's fault. You should always go and welcome your teammate on the pitch. Am I completely wrong about this? And he certainly SHOULD HAVE been removed. He was not "in it to win it," as I like to say, all day. They definitely needed a spark and AJ sure did provide it. I'm very happy for him and hope Clint took him out to a nice dinner to apologize/celebrate.
Hopefully BWFC will still be riding their Gunner high and not show up for the mid-week match-up. Hmm, let's see: should we watch the Cottagers on Wednesday, or El Classico Part 47? Tough decision.

While I love the fire and the high expectations, I'm not in agreement with you about the negative lineup Phil. I didn't think Eidur played poorly at all, and Dembele had some great touches too. though he sholdn't be a striker, definitely more of a creative central mid. Totally disagree that AJ should be in there as a starter EVER! sure he has pace, but that's it. he got one shot off and was lucky that it squeaked through the defenders legs. thank god.
dempsey needed to finish that one opportunity and this would've turned into a blowout. i was disappointed to see his reaction to being pulled as well. he didn't do much on the day. I know it probably won't happen but i'd like to see. sidwell and dembele in the middle of the field (he tracks back anyway!). kakuta on the right, demps on the left, zamora and eidur up front. we don't really need to have speed up front since we work the ball up the field deliberately and raraly counter anyway. unorthodox-yes. effective-let see.

Important day. We left three points on the field last week. Now, at home, we need to secure 3 points to climb the table and secure our position for another year of prem. action. I agree with some other's comments; Kakuta needs to play more. Not only are we paying his wages, but he is a real threat with his pace. All due respect to Murphy, but Kakuta should be starting. We can bring in Danny as the match grinds on.
