Eleven days in and that sinister cloaked figure of the night, the Transfer Window, stalks the unwary, the innocent and the vulnerable, knife at the ready, but yet to strike in earnest.

Representing Fulham, Mark Hughes is in play with £8 million pounds of the chairman's money. So, straight off the bat, if that figure is to be believed, why on earth is he stating an interest in Robbie Keane - valued by Spurs at £7 million, and likely to demand a deal far more than the current top wage of £50 grand a week being paid to BZ and AJ? Virtually the whole budget on one 30-year-old striker who can't get in the Spurs first team, and who has more than the whiff of a busted flush (a la Andy J) about him? Forget it.

The lazy journos have all jumped on the story, creating their own headlines, as they always do, amidst the miasma of speculation, whispers and misinformation that surrounds transfer deals. Take the attention-grabbing Maradona rumours. This larger than life figure will not be heading for SW6 anytime soon. Blackburn's new owners, who know plenty about chicken farming but may not be quite so quick to identify a turkey, have quickly shown a liking for drama...Big Sam shafted, overtures to Ronaldinho...let them toy with the roly-poly troubled star.

Back to the runners and riders. Why are we not in the market for Adam? We surely can match the figures being offered by Villa? At 25 this man is the natural successor to Murphy as playmaker and captain. We must start a serious campaign to swing Mark behind the Scotsman. Evaluate for a second if you would the return over a full season from Charlie in the ranks (even if recruited for £4 mill) compared to the fitful performances you might get from a SWP? Once again, please quash rumours surrounding this over-rated midget Mark, although logic over what Wright-Phillps wage demands would be sugget this - as with Keane - is never gonna happen. I hope I'm right.

By the same token, the above must surely apply to Togo's favourite son, Mr Adebayor. I loved this guy at Arsenal, but without Wenger's influence he started to believe his own publicity and has gone backwards. He will have no appetite whatsover for a relegation scrap before 25,000 cynics at the Cottage...and £160,000 a week. Who the hell will pay that? Only West Ham could be that stupid (oh yes, they're already committed to meeting £70,000 a week for on-loan Wayne Bridge - remember how ordinary he was with us???). Get a grip Karren...and prepare for life in Div 2.

Sidwell's deal seems sound. Short term contract to see how he goes. Recall though, this deal was in place last summer and Hughes preferred to put it off. Seeing how our midfield then endured a collective loss of form from October, this in hindsight looks to have been a mistake.

Finally, I'm going to float a suggestion of my own. We know the club monitor this blog so let's see if we can transmit some positive vibes on this. A realistic 'presence in the box' that remains the manager's top priority. Shane Long of Reading. Examine his goalscoring record - penalty taker, great attitude and would surely thrive with better players around him. Best of all, very affordable and just down the M4.

In fact I'm meeting an old colleague - and very well-connected Reading fan (personal friend of their Chairman) - in the town on Friday. I'd be happy to open the door if the club care to give me a call...

Keep the faith! If you're thinking of going to Wigan Sat just DO IT! You know you want to. Twitter@fulhamphil

I agree Charlie Adam is an ideal buy. Young, proven, gifted, and inexpensive. SWP would not be bad as Duff and Davies are not getting any younger or faster. He would give the team some much needed width but I think he would expose Pantsil who despite returning to the starting 11 is still not looking convincing this year and is defintely aided by the defensive exploits of either Davies or Duff in front of him.

Otherwise is there a striker out there besides Keane Fulham is in for? I think a loan for Vela might work out for now but the team needs someone besides Zamora to count on. Dembele and Dempsey are really attacking midfielders so neither is an ideal partner or cover for Zamora and lets face it Kamara, AJ, and EJ are not cutting it in the Prem. They need another out and out striker to count on. Dempsey has been brilliant but as the manager continues to point out he is playing out of position at striker.

Can someone tell me what happened to Dembele?

Blog Central: Well he hasn't been traded. Ankle injury picked up on international duty in Nov has been slow to heal. Failed a fitness test at weekend but will be fit for Wigan. Expect to see him on the bench.

Will be important to get both a quality striker and solid midfielder in January. Concerned about Murphy, Davies and Duff being able to handle the pace for the remainder of year. Didn't Roy used to get Murphy off in the 72 minute a lot. Don't see that much with Mark.

Better augment the midfield and pick up a forward that can control and hold the long balls up front for the challenges upcoming to stay up. Don't think Keane is worth the asking price if the numbers reported are accurate.

I am a bit naive in these areas, but I'll toss up some strikers. Ricardo Fuller? Tuncay? Carlton Cole?

Blog Central: Could all do a job for FFC

i must admit i am a little discouraged about hughes' activity (or lack there of) thus far in the transfer window. i am disheartened to see some players that ffc were looking at--which i thought would have been good signings--committing to other teams; and the latest name that we are linked with, swp, i could live without. while i would appreciate his pace on the wing, there are some players that just dont fit a team, and in my opinion swp is one of those players. but, phil, i could be mistaken and would love to hear your thoughts.

thank you for the blog, it is greatly appreciated.

Bit of a puzzle right now. Some inconsistancy that is troubling. Need a steady possesion center midfielder besides Murphy and a natural goal scorer up front like Van Nistelroy. Maybe Roy Keane would have been that piece (as having a knack around the box to find the net) I really like how Dembelee plays, just needs to be paired with someone who wont launch the ball over the crossbar from 6yards like Bobby Z does.

Blog Central: Not sure Roy Keane us up to it these days, Robbie possibly.

Indeed
Perhaps one too many pints for myself Blog Central.
To be honest, I was happy that Fulham had possibly missed out on "Robbie" Keane, but I had to re-think my disregard for Robbie when I arrived at the conclusion that Fulham needs a natural goal scorer.
Any rate you knew who I was going on about

all the best

The real problem we have in our desperate plight for a striker is trying to find someone who is used to English football, would be open to a transfer, and won't cost a fortune in wages. Hence my list above. Those players (Fuller, Tuncay, and C.Cole) might make the necessary impact that saves our season. AJ just isn't cutting it at the moment, Kamara has the same problem, EJ is never going to be good enough, and who else is there? Still, if BZ was still fit, we could have been in the top 8 or so. It's just the way things go.

yea Jonathan. I hear your Carlton Cole. That would make some sense. Agree someone whom is already use to the EPL (Bent would have been good--a paltry 18-24mil). So yea I hear your Carlton Cole, just would also need to consider who you would be willing to sacrifice/trade for him? EJ-yes, AJ-yes, Kamara-yes, Dembelee- Im liking his skills too much. I would like to see how good this guy gets.
