Fulham come from behind to claim their first win of the season, but our deserved win over rugged Wolves comes at a horrrendous price. Bobby Zamora faces a lengthy lay-off after breaking his ankle.
The footballing gods showed their dark side at Craven Cottage as man-of-the-moment Zamora cruelly suffered a fractured ankle in the first-half following a heavy tackle from Karl Henry. Zamora was clearly in great pain, oxygen was administered on the pitch, and after a lengthy delay the player was carried off and taken straight to hospital.
Referee Phil Dowd had a difficult afternoon, denying three Fulham shouts for a penalty and booking 6 Wolves men before red-carding Christophe Berra late on for yet another body-check on the edge of the box. Justice was done from the free-kick to alleviate what remains a black afternoon for the club. The ball was teed up for Moussa Dembele, the wall obligingly jumped, and our star striker drilled a daisy cutter inside Hahnemann's left-hand post.
Man of the Match Dembele drew Fulham level following a 10th minute volley from van Damme that gave the away side a half-time lead. If Fulham were disjointed in that first-half, they came out with all guns blazing after half-time. Dembele struck four minutes into the half with a scuffed shot 10 yards from goal as he and Simon Davies caused confusion in the box. Gera put a close range bicycle kick over the top and Davies should have converted from close range.
Wolves were hanging on with only long ball forays to test the Fulham rearguard. They were clearly sent out to take no prisoners, but just as it seemed their abrasive approach would preserve their unbeaten start, on 90 minutes Dembele set the Hammy End alight with a winner that sends the Whites up to 5th. Mark Hughes felt Davies should have had a hat-trick of penalties, but praised his side for taking the game by the scruff of the neck and showing both guts and skill in wearing down Wolves.
After another rousing display from Mark Hughes men, our thoughts tonight go out to Zamora and his family. Long term injuries at the start of a season...Bullard at Newcastle, Brian home to Boro, and now Bobby, just as he breaks into the England set-up and secures a new 4 year contract. Get well soon!

Credit to Hughes for rallying the troops at halftime. Any precedence for how long these injuries generally take? Sometimes it's actually better to get a break than a ligament tear that requires surgery, not sure if that's the case w/ ankles.

What a shame to lose Zamora. But on the plus side Dembele looks menacing every time he touches the ball and Fulham is as tough and gritty a side as you're likely to find. I came to the club because of Dempsey, but I'll stay for the never say die spirit.

Great way to win a game! I love the dramatics and the never say die attitude. ALso, I wonder if this means Eddie Johnson will get some playing time now with Zamora out for a while. I'm sad he got hurt, but hopefully another American gets his chance to prove his worth in the EPL.

Our hearts and well wishes go out to Bobby Zamora for a solid, speedy recovery. He has been phenomenal in his production and class. I, too, would like to see Eddie Johnson produce. I know he is capable and the fact that Mark Hughes has had him poised on the bench for a while shows he has seen merit. Make it count Eddie!
