The transfer window for European clubs has closed. Enough kinetic energy to launch a medium-sized space probe being generated by the media industry in the past six weeks, with Sky Sports in the role of Mission Control. Time to examine some facts and kill the rumours.

First up, I firmly believe Fulham have come through the summer with a stronger squad than we finished last season. The transition from Roy to Mark seems to be pretty seamless, the hiatus over our on-off move for Jol all but forgotten. The players find training sessions under Hughes more enjoyable, the body language I saw in two matches last week speaks of a happy and close-knit squad. Pre-kick off the team all huddle, high five and fire each other up.

Only one first-team member has gone in Konchesky. In return for cash, we also get two 19 year-olds from Liverpool's reserves, a winger and a striker. Time will tell how hot these prospects are (one a Finn, the other Swedish) but both were being tracked by Barcelona and Ajax and word is they have real potential. Also, in Salcido we have Mexico's current international left-back to replace Konch with a 5 year stint at PSV on his CV - and good business at £1.5 million.

Schwarzer didn't get his dream move, though Fulham wanted to trade. Arsenal are unlikely to come back in January still offering £4 million, but with Stockdale injured, Given snubbing us and interest in Federici and Speroni (there may have been others) not leading to a deal, Hughes had to hang on to his no.1 keeper. Full marks to the boss for playing hardball, interesting to see now what reception the big Aussie gets from the fans. I wouldn't be surprised to see Stockdale back in once fit.

Roque Santa Cruz wanted to come on loan but City blocked it, Eidur in the end preferred Stoke, but hey, AJ is running and due back by the end of the month. That means with Kamara, and the new wunderkind Dembele, we are if anything top heavy on strikers.

Despite all the talk about Napoli and a host of top European clubs from his agent, nobody made a move for Deuce, nor Gera, though Hughes reveals there had been offers (for big money) to lure Bobby Z away from SW6. Hangeland too, surely the perfect fit for Roy's rebuilding of a failing club, still shows his commitment to the Whites.

So our great club must be doing something right. In a perfect world, and we fans are never satisfied let's face it, the one rumour I cannot verify - but would have loved to have seen happen -was David Bentley from Spurs on loan.

Recent posts back it up - we are a direct winger and a midfield general away from being genuine top 7 contenders. If Hughes can blend the new signings with those who served us so well last season, the only way is up. Let's start with 3 points off Wolves next game.

So how do you think FFC conducted business in the transfer window? It was the quietest in 5 years with spending way down, so the only guys not happy with life are those parasites of the game, the agents. Watch out for more insights on that issue coming soon!

Keep the Faith Fulham FC, London's oldest football club.

Forwards: We may have many but Bobby Zamora is irreplaceable when injured or suspended. Eddie Johnson and David Elm unfortunately are not Premier League quality and Dempsey does not play the target man role well. Have high hopes for Trotta, but he's still very young. So we will struggle to score goals if Bobby is out for any length of time.

Agree that a solid forward is key to ending this streak of draws, although I do believe/hope zamora will emerge as a top flight striker in the coming weeks.

Blog Central : Crikey, he's in the form of his life and now a full international. What more do you want?

First off, phil I'm loving the committment to the blog. I checked back in after a week, and saw several updates from you. the more the better keep it coming. i'll be checkin in more often from here on...

thoughts:

Zamora looks great right now, with the exception of maybe/probably Crouch, (who seemed to win every single ball in the second leg against young boys) i think he's the best target in the prem.

also agree that we're better off this year, than last. konch will be missed, but there is finally some good depth up front, and on the wings. still a glaring lack of depth in the middle though. i also like that we picked up a few prospects. gotta stay young.

Finally, i think deuce and gera need to be on the field more. it's a travesty to have both of them coming off the bench like we did against blackpool, they both provide the much needed link up passes and creative touches in the final 3rd, that lead to goals. one of those 2 should start over davies.

Still not sold on Zamora he is too inconsistent for me to pin my hopes for our team on his shaky boot. Hopefully he will prove me wrong, but I have seen him play too many times to be in love with him. I like him now, but probably will never trust him to bring home the goals.

FFC lacks 3 items this year: a goal hungry forward who can score on a daily basis; a young central midfield general who can distribute and play some defense and a solution to the Dempsey/Gera problem.

IMO, Dempsey is the it factor that made FFC successful during the past 2 seasons and Gera is playing quite well.

While I love Dempsey, maybe we should consider selling him as he is at the top of his age and could fetch some major money--which we could invest elsewhere.

We had too many shutouts last year so I hope that is fixed this year although I have to admit--we need a win next Saturday as this is the easy part of our schedule and we need points as we may suffer when the heart of our schedule is upon us.

I wasn't a fan of Konch--no right foot. Fulham 11:

GK: Schwarz

Def: RB: Pantsil, CB: Hangeland, Hughes, LB: Salcido

Mid: RM: Dempsey, DM: Etuhu, AM: Gera, LM: Davies/Duff

For: Bobby Z, Dembele.

Blog Central : So minus Murphy, who's your skipper?

Posted by Seth on 09/07/2010

skipper: either Hughes or Hangeland

I agree with you on Konch.

I still worry about Zamora and his consistency. Although I have to admit wihout Johnson he is a different and exciting player.

Top 7; maybe.
