Making no secret of the fact that he was hungry for signings to give the club more options, Mark Hughes has secured the services of AZ Alkmaar striker Moussa Dembele on a three year deal. Hughes told us he was thankful to have got his man. "It is important we add to the squad to compete at a consistently high level this season."
Hughes describes the 23 year old as both 'quick and strong' and has paid over £5 million pounds for the man with 28 caps for his adopted country Belgium. Dembele has been tracked by Birmingham and Chelsea among others and had made no secret of his desire to play in the Premiership. He helped AZ lift the Eredivisie title in 2008-9 contributing 18 goals from 118 appearances for the Dutch side.
The player admitted he may not be ready for this Sunday's game against United, "I understand that Fulham has a strong squad so I'm prepared to work hard for the manager and take my chance to impress him, and my teammates, when the opportunities arise."
Dembele's arrival will certainly set supporters minds racing as to who might make way for the £5 million pound man. As Moussa can play both down the middle and on the flank Andy Johnson will really be getting twitchy about regaining full fitness, likewise Diomansy Kamara. Or will Clint and Zoltan find themselves back warming the bench, should Moussa strike an instant rapport with Zamo? Also, Simon Davies has just been awarded a new 3 year deal.
An interesting period ahead, with more questions than answers for now - until we've seen Dembele in a white shirt. But well done Fulham for showing ambition, and welcome to West London, Moussssssaaaaaa...ah...ah...ah. You heard the chant here first!

I'll claim a little biased interst(as I'm a Yank)in this, but why would Dempsey be put to the bench? He was one of the solid performers last year, and I believe he established a good reputation and solid place in the starting 11. I've been wathcing The Premier League for 3 yrs. now and have gotten a basic grasp of players...is there something I'm missing? Is he just not a Hughes "guy" in his style?

Phil, thanks for your insights over the years. If I were Dempsey I'd look to go back to MLS now. Hughes doesn't see him as one of the top 5 midfielders. If Moussa is good, and he'll have every chance to show it, he'll pair with Zamora. The deal with Simon Davies shows a long-term commitment to him. Gera is a skillful player who emerged last year. So I think it will be Duff, Murphy, Etuhu, and Davies or Gera in the midfield most days. The roster doesn't need to be as deep this year with no Europe. I don't agree with this, but it's what I see happening.

Actually I first saw it on www.goal.com so I doubt your chant is entirely original.

Not sure why everyone seems to think there is some sort of crisis involving Dempsey because he was a sub for one game (only Hughes' second game, and in the first he started Dempsey in a friendly, but with a strong lineup). Gera had a hat trick within 15 minutes of coming on for Dempsey against Bremen, so I don't blame him for giving the Zamora-Gera combination a chance to start a game. Let's give Hughes more than one competitive game to figure out how he wants to use the squad, Dempsey should have plenty of chances. Dempsey also signed a three-year extension last year (meaning he has three years left as of now). Hughes may have different plans than Hodgson did, but it's not like he re-signed Davies and ignored Dempsey. If he did leave now, I don't know why he'd look to MLS when he's still under 30 and could still play for a big European club.
BTW, according to Wikipedia Dembele was born in Belgium and has a Belgian mother, so I wouldn't say Belgium is his adopted country.

DougJ,
Good points, and I agree that it was just one game...my question should have been more geared toward understanding the game. Is Dempsey seen as a definite starting 11 guy in England (?), on a middle-top team? Also, not knowing how managers styles infuence teams...if it's anything like American Football, then a new coach can issue dramatic changes, even to established players. I would think there'd be a few Premier teams interested in Dempsey if he were available.

Excellent comments, Sean and DougJ.
If I'm Dempsey, I see US International Stuart Holden--who came on in the 86th minute against England and did not play otherwise in the World Cup for the US team--play 90 minutes v. Fulham in a 4-midfielder set for Bolton. Not that Bolton is great, but they're not atrocious--they were 14th to Fulham's 12th in 09-10.
The US has 4 world-class field players: Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley and Cherundolo. Maybe 3 or 4 world-class keepers, including Howard, Friedel, and Guzan.
On the positive, it was a great joy to see BOBBY FOR ENGLAND against Hungary. Even if he had been terrible, he will always be an England International. As it happens, he was excellent, and made us wonder what could have been instead of Heskey.
OK, Hughes, let's see what you've got against ManU.
