Fulham is in the Europa League final. Let me write that again, Fulham is in the Europa League final!!! It took a gritty second half comeback for the Whites to claim victory and head back to Hamburg for the final on May 12th, but our beloved Cottagers have made it through to the final in what is has to be the most historic run in Fulham's long history.
Things looked shaky in the first half on Thursday against Hamburg as opened the scoring with a well taken free kick by Mladen Petric from about 30 yards out. However, as we have seen throughout this competition Fulham is not an easy team to put away and in the second half the Cottagers showed the heart of champions. First it was Simon Davies who found the back of the net in the 69th minute and then Zoltan Gera put the champagne on ice in the 76th with the winner that sends the Cottagers to Hamburg for the final against what looks to be Liverpool, who is leading in extra time as I write this.
Regardless of the opponent, the transformation of Fulham Football Club from a team on the brink of relegation into potential Europa League champions in the span of two years is nothing short of miraculous. Roy Hodgson and his side have given the fans a lot to cheer about in that time. For a group of supporters that has not had much to cheer about before Hodgson took over, it has been a fun and eventful ride since Hodgson took the reigns from Lawrie Sanchez in December of 2007.
Nobody in their right mind would have pegged this team to achieve what they have achieved in the span of two years. Avoiding relegation the last few years would have been suffice for most of us, but Hodgson had other ideas starting with last season's club record 7th place finish which gave the club it's birth into the Europa League.
Despite starting in the qualifying rounds in July, Fulham persevered in both the league and in the Europa League. There was not a time during the season where relegation was a serious matter for the Cottagers and for a squad as small as Fulham that is quite commendable that the team was able to wage battle on two fronts and be successful in both.
First there was the must win in Basel to get into the knockout stage. That was special. At that point I figured anything else was icing on the cake. Well, there has been a lot of icing as the Cottagers then knocked out defending champions Shakhtar Donetsk before the miraculous comeback in the second leg at Craven Cottage that sent Juventus packing out of the competition. Then the Cottagers ended Wolfsburg's European dreams before finally storming back against Hamburg on Thursday to reach the final. That my friends is a nice run. Those are some solid teams Fulham dispatched on their way to the final on May 12th.
Like the previous European victories, I am virtually left speechless at what has happened. For anyone who has been supporting this club for a long time this is one to savour for a long, long time. And the best is that the Cottagers will get their chance to Europa League champions against either Liverpool or Atletico Madrid on May 12th.
What are your thoughts and feelings after this match? Were you worried when Fulham trailed 1-0 at half? Can you believe Fulham is in a European final? Let me know your thoughts.
Great day for Fulham yet again in Europe!! One more to go on May 12th for all the gusto!! Let's go Fulham!!

Congratulations, I really like Fulham and even though I support another team, it has been fun to watch them in Europe this season. I hope Fulham lifts the first Europa league cup.

What an amazing game!! The whole match was a crazy rollercoaster ride, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout 90 minutes!
I was really depressed the first twenty-five minutes of the second half, and was about to give up all hope, when Davies scored an absolute stunner!!
And when Gera scored the second goal minutes later, I was running around my tiny apartment, half naked, shouting "GERA GERA GERA GERA" (Will probably receive a complaint tomorrow from the neighbours)!
The rest of the game was terrifying, but we did it... We ******* did it!
Its just fantastic!
Oh joy!
I still cannot believe it!

As an aussie who likes to follow our boys overseas it has been a great thrill to ride with Fulham on this journey...what a gutsy performance spotted with periods of play & goals that would grace any table. Congratulations to coach, players & fans...Hamburg here we come.

I will be the first to admit that I wasn't sure of Roy playing all the starters for the Europa League; I thought that we had a better shot at the Cup and staying up in the Premiership. This is just unreal and one of the proudest moments in the history of FFC!! COYW beat Athletico Madrid May 12!!!!

Welcome back Tom, and yes what a game. Under ROY, Manager of the Year, you know something will happen, even when 1-0 down. One day it won't but it was not going to be today.
How the players do it is beyond me. So many games this year, and still another two weeks of playing 2 games a week.
But for the only time in most of these players carears the last game will be a european final.
What a way to finish a hectic, but so satisfying season.
Thanks Tom for your blogs, I have really enjoyed them.
Can we win the final?
I will be happy and contented regardless because with Roy and the players you know they tried their heart out.

Congratulations to Fulham and everyone associated with the club! I also support another club, but how can I not be excited for you? This is just an awesome run. Congratulations to Clint Dempsey, too, here's hoping that he'll be the first American to play in a European continental final.
Hold onto the magic for one more game! The entire world (outside of Madrid, obviously) is cheering for you. Good luck!

I have to say. I have told all that I do not expect a win the last 8 matches. They have earned the right to celebrate.
Sitting through the next 3 premiership games will be excruciating just waiting for the final. I do not know how they could possibly keep focused for those three games while awaiting the game. even I can barely stay in my seat while typing.
All that I can really say is:
GOOD LUCK BOYS

Yesterday was my birthday and all I wanted was a victory for Fulham and by God, I got it!!!!! My co-workers took mercy on me and let me go home early so I could watch the match. You would think after all the magic this season, I would be used to it by now. But I am still gobsmacked and astonished at all they have accomplished. The Welsh Wizard and my Hungarian Hero took their turn at center stage for a team that has been just that all year: a TEAM. I am so proud and can't wait until 12 May. COYW!

I'm not a Fulham fan, but I've always had a liking to them. Being an American and seeing Clint Dempsey in a european final is jaw dropping and so was his goal against Juve. I ******* hope I can find a place to watch the Final.

I couldn't watch the game because of work on Thursday and puposely shut myself off from all soccer media so I could see it today (Friday). I was the only one at the bar cheering for Fulham but I know there were many more all over the world cheering with me! I have followed Fulham for a few years and let me say I have enjoyed this European adventure enormously. I thought we would give Hamburg a run for their money, but to play the way we did! All the credit has to go to the players, Roy Hodgson, Mohammed Al-Fayed, and the board. Just wonderful guys! You can bet I won't be the only one at the bar cheering on Fulham during the final!!! COYW!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Fulham. They deserve nothing less than a victory in Hamburg. What a great run this season, every article I've read about their victory on Thursday was nothing but praise for Hodgson and the club but they also failed to mention how far they got in the FA Cup this season, almost knocking out Tottenham in the quarter-finals (only if Gomes didn't have such good relaxes against Fulham and the game had to go to a replay at White Hart Lane). Hopefully the final will be carried by some network here in the States but probably not so I'll have to follow the live text updates on the web.

What i admire from Fulham this year, at least in the Europa league, was its fighting spirit. The players simply never say die, even in the direst condition.
Reminded me of Manchester United's unforgettable 1999 UCL final vs Munich.
BRAVO!

Is it too early to start speculating on who may leave and who would be good to get coming in? We know Smalling is leaving. Zamora might too. This is probably for a different article rather than posting on this one, but the speculation that Stephen Ireland may be leaving City made me wonder about getting him at Fulham. Thoughts?

Posted by Kevin_amold on 05/06/2010
Yes, it's too early to start speculating. Stephen Ireland is probably too expensive for the Whites.

Some players will be leaving next season. 1st they have to find replacement. after that only they have to find new player to strengthen the squad... its depend on next season budget...
i dont think Irelend is a good target for fulham...the target should be a really creative midfielder because murphy will not play every single game anymore...a pacey & wide winger will give extra strength..someone like hamburg's left winger...Jonathan Pitroipa really useful...i thought...
