Fulham

It's hard to believe that Fulham has not won a league match since December 19th when the Cottagers manhandled Manchester United 3-0 at Craven Cottage. Since that glorious day, things have gone downhill in a hurry as losses and injuries have mounted up for Roy Hodgson's side that leaves the club at a crossroads in terms of where the season will head from here. Will the team rebound and improve or will the losses and downward trend continue for the foreseeable future?

I am not sure any of us can answer that question. Of course if you are a Fulham supporter you are hoping things pick back up and the club gets back on track in league play, in the FA Cup and in a month or so, the Europa League. However, the reality of the situation leads me to believe that the downward trend will continue for a while. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am not saying Fulham is going to get relegated, but I do feel that the Cottager's chances of finishing in 7th again and possibly qualifying for Europe are all but over.

It is one thing to lose to Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United or even Liverpool, but losing to Stoke City and Blackburn in consecutive matches is disheartening. However, it is not so much the losses to those clubs that make me pessimistic for the rest of the season. Rather, it is the injuries to key players that is leaving me befuddled as to what Roy Hodgson can do to right this ship.

With John Pantsil already done for the season and Bobby Zamora out another six weeks or so, things got worse on Sunday as Clint Dempsey went down with a suspected cruciate ligament knee injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season and perhaps part of next season depending on the extent of the ligament tear.

On top of that, it has been reported that Brede Hangeland is suffering from a knee injury over the past few weeks. While the Norwegian international has been in the lineup the last few matches, it is clear he is not at 100% and the defense has struggled mightily. In the last three league matches Fulham has shipped seven goals after giving up only 1 in the previous four league matches. Something is not going right defensively. Whether it be Hangeland's knee problem or Pantsil's absence, it is definitely a major issue for Fulham right now.

Many will say that the timing of the injuries and struggles is good as the transfer window is open right now and will be until January 31st. While I agree the timing is good, I am not sure the answer to all of Fulham's injury problems will come in the form of a number of different new signings.

I am not against Roy Hodgson making any moves in January, but looking at the bigger picture of where this club will be in a season or two, I almost think it would be best to save the money and do nothing in January.

I am not against Roy Hodgson making any moves in January, but looking at the bigger picture of where this club will be in a season or two, I almost think it would be best to save the money and do nothing in January.

I am sure most Fulham supporters will disagree with my stance on this issue but let me give you my reasons why I feel this way.

1. Firstly, as any Fulham supporter knows, the amount of money that the club has to spend on new players is a fraction of what most of the other Premier League clubs have at their dispersal. Additionally, most transfers in January are more expensive than in the summer months when prices drop considerably.

2. We are not going to get relegated. We are clear of the bottom three by 8 points. While it is not a huge gap, there are 9 teams between the Cottagers are Hull City, which sits in 18th place on 19 points.

3. In all likelihood, we are not going to finish in 7th place and qualify for Europe next season. We are also not going to win the Europa League. Between Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and even a resurging Everton squad competing for the European spots, I have major doubts that the Cottagers will finish in the top ten, let alone the top seven.

4. Fulham is an older squad and the team needs a facelift at some point soon. Danny Murphy, Mark Schwarzer, Damien Duff, Aaron Hughes and others are not getting any younger. It is going to take significant funds and scouting over the next year or two for this team to replace these key players and continue playing at a high level. With the club having limited funds most seasons, is it worth it to sign a few players now, for prices that are inflated, to get 10th place in the Premier League or would you rather save the money until the summer when more scouting, research and time can be spent to be sure the club is getting quality players?Firstly, as any Fulham supporter knows, the amount of money that the club has to spend on new players is a fraction of what most of the other Premier League clubs have at their dispersal. Additionally, most transfers in January are more expensive than in the summer months when prices drop considerably.

I know success does not come around too often for Fulham. And I really hope the club can turn it around soon and finish this season well. However, I do not feel that the club should mortgage their finances over the next two weeks in the hope of saving a season that is not going to get the club much in return.

If there are some players that could come on the cheap that Roy thinks can help the team, I am all for signing them. However, I am not at all interested in the club making panic buys to make up for the injured players. Let's really see what we have in Chris Smalling, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Bjorn Helge Riise and others who have not played that much in league play. As far as I am concerned, with relegation out of the picture, this is a unique chance to give these players some serious playing time and evaluate them to see if they are worth keeping around or not for the next few seasons.

The next two weeks will be very interesting as far as Fulham is concerned. If the club does little or nothing in terms of bringing in new players, I am guessing they are conceding this season is all but over in terms of their aspirations of repeating last season's success. However, if the club brings in a significant player or two, then the team will be gunning for it and looking to make a major push this season.

Where do you stand on all of this? Do you think it is possible for Fulham to make up for the injury problems by buying in January or would you rather see some of the younger, inexperienced players get some major playing time? Do you feel if Fulham spends a significant amount of money in January that it will possibly limit what they can spend in the summer and beyond? I am sure most people disagree with my stance, but I have laid out my reasons why. Tell me why I am wrong.

I will concede that you make some valid points in regards to how much funds Fulham have to spend relative to other EPL clubs and the inflated prices involved with the winter transfer window. However, the striker combination of Andy Johnson and Erik Nevland leaves much to be desired. With having David Elm as the only other available option at the moment, adding a striker during the current window seems like a logical and sound move.

I agree that fulhams push for a european spot is over, their only real chance being the FA cup if we continue to get good draws, everton have as small and injury ravaged squad as us, but they have one thing fulham does not, firstly an ability to be gritty and grind out results, and be a threat from set peices. the one thing for sure that fulham needs is another target man, the system does not work without one and without zamora, and also zamora was worked to hard when he was in, u could see every game he gave his all and was never really in top gear, it would be a good thing to have another target man in to be able to rotate when he gets fit again, im not sure if that roma foreward is the ideal replacement, maybe kyle laferty from rangers, hes having a terrible season and should come on the cheap as they play him on the wing and was only bought for 3 million anyways, also rob friend in the german bundesliga is a viable option as he is an out and out target man and gets no playing time

Wait are you saying Dempseys going to be out for the rest of the season?... any update on him?... fuck my life! I havent seen any reports from his scan and was hoping he would be well enough for the WC too play in. As for the transfer window. I think we need too try and find a target man who can produces goals or even a winger who can because if we have a strong forward and he can score goals thats awesome but we still havent solved the Defense or Midfield problem of aging. and if we buy a winger whos talented and can score and maybe cement our midfield. I agree playing young players will help us see our depth if we still have some also i think we might want too pick up a midfield player for the long haul. As long as we know he is going too be good for us and fit our budget. I wouldve like too see RH try to get Donovan when he was sayin he was going too come over... because he can play up front or in the midfield and be VERY effective his speed and knowledge of the game.

Dempsey is apparently NOT going to need surgery on his knee, and may be back before the end of the Premier League season.

I think the author makes a sound argument about buying in the January window, but it's not our money. It's football club money, and it should be spent on players when the need arises. If the current injury table doesn't qualify as a pressing need, then the club needs new owners.

Tom, first we need to take care of the 'jinx' issue. The last two times you've posted a "let's enjoy the success/isn't this great" blog, massive bad luck/bad play has struck the team. From now on, only pessimism from you...please :)

I don't agree with you that the boys are a lock not to be relegated. Our injury problems are SO extreme. I think Roy needs to be scampering to find someone/anyone with premier league/international success. A striker and a versatile defender who can play inside/outside is needed. I still trust our midfield to be productive, even without Dempsey.

It's going to be a scramble now. Once you start the downward spiral, it plays with your head and panic sets in. Me? I won't relax until we have 40 points...if we get 40 points.

We just an on-loan forward to see us through the next few months. Emile Heskey would be a perfect replacement for Zamora. He doesn't score much, but he can certainly fill the role of a holding forward, which is the best aspect of Zamora's game. If you need someone to score, James Beattie is a solid candidate. He's wants away from Stoke and he has a tendancy to score in bunches when he first joins a new club, then tails off later. I think he's a perfect loan candidate.

Overall, I'm not seeing many points left in the remainder of the season, so for my money top half of the table ambitions must be set aside, and the target needs to be 40 points. That's a manageable, achievable goal. Anything beyond 40 is gravy.

Why are we trying too sell Chris Smalling... even though he hasnt played a lot for us this season when he has he showed us wat he can do and with Hangeland maybe having a knee injury Painstil out for the season and Konchesky out y not try and keep him and mold him into an outstanding Centre defender. I think he would be good too keep around when Hughes decides he is going to retire and wit the injury problem we are having in the defense... C'mon RH lets not give away our young talent... and if the EPL decides on the home grown rule he would definately be one of our 6 we have to have on squad at all times i would think.

What do you guys think?

I'm not sure I agree with all your points.

First, we must always be mindful of relegation---8 points isn;t that huge. A losing streak of a few games and there we are again! Be careful.

Second, we don't score many goals to begin with and with no Zamora and no Dempsey (a majority of our goals) we have no real attacking threat and no real person/people who can hold a ball while we counter.

Third, we need to get younger so we are selling Smalling. I need this one explained to me a bit more? This makes no sense to me and of all the things that we are doing, or not doing this is the most puzzling to me.

Fourth, once you concede a season, it gets worse for the team and it is way too early for us to stop playing to win. There is only 8 points between us and trouble!

Finally, we now need to break the pattern of "its good enough to just finish the season above relegation". We need to remember the plight of Leeds, Southamptoin and others who had that just say up mentality.

If you weren't worried after the awful display at Accrington Stanley, then surely yesterday's display at White Hart Lane was enough to at least raise an eyebrow.

It was great to see Zamora back, and that does alleviate some of the scoring concern, but what is clear is that we are being over-run in central midfield. Even with five mids for most of the match, we were unable to provide any service to Zamora. Danny Murphy has been forced to resort to quick flicks to move the ball up the pitch. He can't run at players anymore and he can't cope with even moderate pressure from opposition mids. Surely, its time to look for someone to take over for him. The sooner the better.

The season is in real jeopardy. Forty points has to be the target now.
