We are less than one month away from the opening of the transfer window. With Fulham in 8th place in the Premier League and one win away from qualifying for the knockout stage of the Europa League, nobody will argue that it has been a successful campaign thus far for the Cottagers. But with injuries to Andy Johnson, Diomansy Kamara and Danny Murphy throughout the last few months, it has become clear that Fulham needs to find some reinforcements for the second half of the season.
January can be an exciting time for teams because of the transfer window being open. However, I have always felt that more often than not teams have to pay over the odds for new additions. Additionally, it usually takes non-English players some time to adjust to the physical play of the Premier League. These two things must be taken into consideration this coming January for Fulham as the Whites needs players that can contribute right away and come at a relatively cheap price.
I have not heard or read anything about the amount of money chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed will give to Roy Hodgson to spend this January. I do not expect the club to sign a player in the £10 million range. However, I do see them spending a bit of cash to bolster the team, specifically adding a striker up front that can come in and score goals.
As we all know, the most expensive position to buy is that of a striker. Fulham does not have the cash to stump up and buy a big name. Chances are the player will come from abroad. As I said earlier, signing a player from abroad can sometimes mean it takes said player a bit of time to adjust. Both Brian McBride and Clint Dempsey spent significant time on the bench when they first came over. However, there are success stories like Vincezo Montella, when he came over in January a few years back and was able to step right in and score goals. If Fulham can find a player like Montella to buy or to get on loan, it would give the club a much needed boost in the goal scoring department.
I have also read rumours that Paul Konchesky might be on his way to Birmingham City. While this is something I do not think will happen, if it does, we will need a left back to fill the void. One name the Independent is mentioning as a possible target is Jon Arne Riise, older brother of current Fulham player Bjorn Helge Riise. As is the case with Konchesky, I do not see this happening but it is something to think about as January approaches.
I wish I had the answers as to who Fulham will attempt to sign but I do not. Another target the Independent is reporting the Cottagers might be in for is Valenciennes striker Johan Audel. The 25-year old has been with the French outfit since 2007 and in 51 appearances with the club he has scored 16 goals. Roy Hodgson is believed to be pondering a £3.5 million bid for his services. I will have to check on Ligue 1 matches the next few weeks to get a look at him. Audel has appeared in nine matches for the Ligue 1 surprise of the season in Valenciennes, who sit 3rd in the table. The Frenchman has scored two goals thus far.
Outside of that, I do not have any insider information as to who might be coming to Craven Cottage. That is where I need your input. Given the financial restrictions Fulham has, which players would you like to see Fulham go out and sign? I think we can mostly all agree that the most pressing need is that of help up front in attack. What names are you hearing that Fulham might be interested in? Do you think Fulham needs to sign anyone? Let me know your thoughts.

David Dunn i think would come tomorrow. He wouldnt cost much thus If hodgson brings him back to his best we would take some beating.
Dunn and Duff, wow!!!

While David Dunn has had a fantastic season thus far, I am skeptical of him. He has a long history of injuries and I fear he would spend more time in the phyiso room than on the pitch.

Landon Donovan (popular)
Graig Bellamy (tenacious)
Steven Fletcher (could come cheap by EPL standards)
Andy Johnson (just kidding - get well Andy!!)
Jerry Palacios (mid-priced and good from Mexico)
Richard Maria Estigarribia (Peru)

I don't think steven Fletcher is an option, as he just signed for Burnley at the start of the season, but looking up to the SPL is a good idea. I know last season Kris Boyd was up for sale in the 4-5 million pound region. That's an idea. And Landon Donovan, as wonderful as he is, isn't an out and out striker. He is more of an attacking midfielder, so again I am not sure he would be the solution to the problem.

Being American, my thoughts turn to the MLS. Most players are very cheap, and it's not unreasonable to expect success in the EPL (think Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard, for example). For strikers, Jeff Cunningham is getting older, but he led the league in goals this year. Actually, age might make him cheaper to buy or loan. Also, Connor Casey is younger and quite good for an MLS player.

Looks like they are going to try to unload Eddie Johnson and a few others to clear salary. Perhaps Ross McCormack would be a cheap striker option. He had 21 goals for Cardiff last season but has fallen out of favor after not getting an EPL transfer approved. Even a loan to have him as cover instead of outright buying him.

Landon Donovan would be a great potential pick up. I think he is fairly underrated because of his size, but his pace a touch are fantastic, not to mention it would bring Fulham some American fans and maybe a little bit of cash, with the best American player of the decade joining the club

what about Scott McDonald from Celtic ho would be a very nippy player in conjunction with our tall forwards. he would feed off of them well. Moving to left field what about an aussie player in Archie Thompson from Melbourne Victory. Very handy player who will need to move soon to be match fit for the World Cup, but with our A-League finishing early he will struggle to do so.
Ask our goalie what he thinks of Thompson.

could we please focus on the realistic signings, if possible someone from england. if konchesky really leaves, it's kinda impossible to get riise as a replacement. i mean from roma to fulham, seriously? why not try Maynor Figueroa or Gareth Bale who isn't getting first team football. i also think they should try and sign a better central midfielder who plays deep and defend like Paul Scharner, Nenad Milijas or Mark Noble. etuhu is good but back up is needed. lately, roy hodgson has been using random centrebacks for that position, for example, chris baird and chris smallings played defensive midfielder in europa league games. and finally, they should strengthen the forward line. Andre Pierre Gignac seems like a long shot but if they got him, fulham will be almost unstopable, pairing with zamora of course. other candidates are Dean Ashton, Kenwyne Jones and Craig Bellamy(since he is not in first team plan).

I don't think we're desperate for a striker, but if your motivation is to get a pure goal scorer for a reasonable amount of money, go get someone like Alexander Frei (coincidentally playing for FC Basel, now). He's a true poacher and has been productive his entire career, where ever he's played. I think we're weakest in central midfield. Beyond the injury issues, Danny Murphy's age is showing and we have no suitable replacement (short or long-term). I would love to see us go after someone like Zvjezdan Misimovic or Mesut Özil, although even an older player like David Pizarro would suffice. Regarding Konchesky, even if he remains with Fulham, we need another left back. We have no cover. Supposedly Toni Kallio can play left back, but if you believe the papers, we're looking to off load him in January.

I still think that the Ivorian from Lille, Gervinho, would be a great buy. He scored twice in Lille's 4-3 win over Lyon. He has had a really good season. I think he already has 4 Europa League goals. Gignac would be a good buy.

I am an American and like Landon Donovan as much as the next American but it is so frustrating to see him suggested constantly as a potential transfer target for Fulham on their various messageboards. One, he is way way way to expensive for Fulham because of the ransom MLS has on his rights. Two, his best position is the one for which Fulham has the most viable first team players. Dempsey, Duff, Davies, Gera, and Riise are all getting first team action on the wings and all are playing pretty well this year. The last thing Fulham needs is an overpriced winger.
As stated above an additional fullback to cover if Konch leaves and another playmaker in the central midfield would be much more pressing needs. Also due to the injuries up front another striker would not be out of the question. Roy will probably bring in some players on loan like he did last year. I doubt he will have the money to outright buy anyone in January that can make an immediate impact.

We need goals, we need goals---too many shut outs this year. Also, since Bullard left the midfield/center position has not been as productive or creative as it could be. More leadership from that area is necessary.
As an American, and season ticket holder, I beg Roy---NO LANDON DONOVAN. Yes, I am a Donovan hater; as he hasn't really ever lived up to his potential. he doesn;t show up when the team needs him and he is afraid of consistant physical play--like that of the EPL. Plus, he's playe din Portland and LA, two very mild climates--nothing like the London winters!
How about Kenny Miller of Rangers on loan? he is 29, knows all about UK winters, has played and found some good success in the UK?
Connor Casey--would be cheap; we like that at Fulham, is physical and scores goals? Plays in Colorado so weather isn;t an issue!
Marcin Zewlakow from APOEL, from Poland, has some experience and is both skilled and tough---plus would be cheap!

What about giovanni dos santos from Tottenham. He's a great player but never plays for Tottenham and I don't think he's hurt. I don't know what his price tag would be but come on, they never play him.

I'm not a Donovan fan, either, but I do think he's improved over the past few seasons. By all accounts, he's about to be loaned to Everton. I hope he does well (not at Fulham's expense, of course) as I think this is his last chance to make a mark outside the U.S.
We're so much better off without Bullard. Bullard wasn't creative; just a ball-hog. He insisted everything go through him, so he was constantly out of position, ruined the spacing and interrupted the flow of the attack. We're much better without him. That being said, Murphy has been over-run in midfield by stronger, faster players this season. I'd really like to invest our limited funds on a good, long-term replacement. Now, I will admit that since Bullard left, we have no one who poses any real threat on free kicks. Dempsey is getting better, but not consistent enough.
'Maybe' on dos Santos (prefer a loan). 'No' on Miller. 'No' on Casey. Don't know enough about Gervinho or Zewlakow to have an opinion.

As a Man City fan the predicament Fulham face is not one I've had to ponder in a little while but it is one that was City's reality for a long time, so I feel for Fulham fans. I also think that a tight budget focuses the mind and forces wise choices. If the conditions being presented by the blogger are:
1. A striker is the priority
2. Must be on the cheap
3. Preferably someone who is in England already or is thought to be able to adapt to the game quickly
If those are the conditions then I think that the best choice would be... Benny McCarthy.
He's already asked to be let go and Big Sam has soon a willingness to let him go considering that he's languishing on the bench. I would imagine that he could be had for a couple million pounds or so and he has shown that he can score in the prem when given playing time. He also has the speed to lead the line.
No matter what if I was a Fulham fan I'd have faith that Roy will do the right thing, he's been one of the best coach in the league.

Lille beat St Etienne 4-0 in which Gervinho scored once, won them a penalty, and had a hand in the first goal. He was awarded man of the match. To watch the highlights go to The World Game. He is on fire.

Teddy, do you think now is the time we could get a long term replacement for Murphy--or do we need to wait until season end?
I agree that we need to sure up our central mid; it is a weak spot for the team and something that I worry about.
I also think we need to fret about the post Zamora (turning 29 this January) and post Johnson era (also turing 29 this February). We have no real replacements for them.
I don;t know much about our reserve team or our academy--anyone know if we have some homegrown talent that we should be pursuing?

If Roy goes looking in U.S. for bargins he should not sign any on the above mentioned. None will suceed.
He should go young - Pointius from DC - either of the young central backs for LA who could both play wide. Players with growth in their future!
Anyway- I trust Roy's judgement. Let him mine France, Eastern Europe and his old coaching grounds for what he needs.

Buy Benni McCarthy or get Pavlychenko on loan. Both players desperate for first team action and both players are proven quality.

Seth, Never too early to start looking for replacement parts. I've been crowing about Murphy's replacement for the past two seasons. He was great last season, but it's so obvious now that he's nearing the end. As far as I'm concerned, Fulham are getting a little long in the tooth across the board, with few options waiting in the wings. As I don't live in London, I can't offer much regarding the academy or reserves.
Because Zamora relies on hold-up play, I think he has several years left. Can't say the same about AJ. Speed is the first to go and that's always been his key asset.
Mesut Özil (Bremen) would top of my list. Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale (Spurs), Victor Moses and Nathaniel Clyne (Palace), Gervinho (Lille), Moussa Sissoko (Toulouse), Boubacar Sanogo (Saint-Étienne) and Loïc Remy (Nice) are all good, young players that I'd be interested in signing to make us better now and to prepare us for the future.

I have to agree we the Man City fan on his assessment of what Fulham has to work with money wise. There is no reason not to look at MLS players since Roy will consider all his options. Landon Donovan I believe has learned from Beckham some lessons that will help him be more mentally prepared to play in any league. However, he is too expensive. I wouldn't mind seeing Roy look at some of the standout players in the CONCACAF area of the world as well.

Glad to see you jump on the Gervinho bandwagon Teddy!
Posted by Teddy_KGB on 12/16/2009
Yeh, Jonathan. You were right. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I didn't know much about him, but afterwards, I decided to do a little research. Gotta love YouTube. Lille are in great form right now, and he's playing quite well for them.
I don't get much coverage of Ligue 1. EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga and La Liga - no problem, but I have to dig for info on Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie.
