Fulham
Posted by Tom Wille on 12/20/2009

I can't lie to you me fellow Fulham supporters, it has been nearly eight hours since our beloved Cottagers hammered defending champions Manchester United 3-0 and I am still struggling to find the words to adequately describe my feelings of jubiliation and excitement regarding not just today's win, but also the win over Basle in the Europa League and the current state of this wonderful club.

I guess the best way to describe how I feel today would be to take you back to July of 2005 during Fulham's preseason tour in Columbus, Ohio here in the States. After watching the Cottagers get run off the pitch in two friendlies against the Columbus Crew and the MLS (Major League Soccer_ All-Stars my brother Mike and I were less than impressed. In fact, I remember Mike telling me during the final match against the All-Stars that Fulham was going to get relegated. Unfortunately, I could create a strong case to refute what he said as the Whites were coming off a 13th place finish in the Premier League and had not done anything significant in the offseason to strengthen the squad.

But my friends, we are not in Columbus anymore. The days of struggling to stay up in the Premier League are a thing of the past with Roy Hodgson at the helm. Gone are the days when each and every match was a struggle and the football was hard on the eyes. This club has turned the corner. We are not duking it out with the teams at the foot of the table, we are fighting and beating teams that traditionally have dominated the Premier League and teams around Europe that are champions of their respective leagues. It feels like I am dreaming. Fortunately, I am not. This is real. And it is fun to be a part of from a supporter perspective.

This past week has in my opinion been the best week I can remember as a Fulham supporter. Things started in Switzerland in a must win or go home match against FC Basle. The Cottagers stepped up and won 3-2 and advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament. As if that were not enough, the Whites returned home to Craven Cottage on Saturday and not just defeated Manchester United, but outplayed them and ran them off the pitch in a shocking 3-0 victory.

Wins in Europe and wins over Manchester United do not occur often for clubs like Fulham. But to secure two historic wins in a matter of four days was about as good as it gets. I can only imagine what it has been like for the Fulham supporters who were at each of those matches. I watched both matches on television here in Chicago and could not stop smiling at what I was seeing. The style of football and the end results were enough to make any supporter as proud as he/she could be in the way this Fulham team has transformed itself into a legitimate contender for a European spot once again this season.

Manchester United supporters can make the claim that injuries played a major part in Fulham's win on Saturday. While that might be the case in the United defense, the attacking options Sir Alex Ferguson played in Rooney, Owen and Berbatov and world class and they could not crack the Fulham defense. If you can't score, you can't win.

Fortunately, Fulham did score and scored often. Danny Murphy, who has been a thorn in the side of Manchester United, opened the scoring the 22nd minute with a 30-yard shot past Tomasz Kuszczak. From that point on, it was all Fulham all the time. Second into the second half, Mr. Bobby Zamora scored his 10th league goal of the season to double Fulham's lead. Damien Duff rounded out the scoring late on to make it a 3-0 final.

If you did not watch or attend the match I cannot stress to you enough how dominant Fulham was today. Truth be told, they missed some good opportunites to score more. It could have easily been 4 or 5 goals on the day. In fact, in the last ten minutes of the match, it could be heard on the television the Fulham supporters chanting, "We want four. We want four". It was as though we were playing against a lower level club when in fact it was the mighty Manchester United that was for once on the opposite end of a major league beatdown at the hands of our Cottagers.

Fulham is playing exceptionally well right now and truth be told, there is no telling how high this team can finish in the league or how far they can advance in Europe. There is a long way to go in each competition. However, Fulham has made it be known that last season was not a fluke and that they will be any team a match on any day in any stadium. That my friends is a far cry from the Cottager team my brother and I saw back in Columbus in July of 2005.

I know I have said this in the past, but a quick word of advice to my fellow Fulham supporters would be to enjoy this right now. These matches and results we have seen over the past few days don't come often for a club like this. I never dreamed in a million years that this would happen to the club I love so dear. Well, it is happening and it is a fun ride to be on.

I wish I could give you more words to tell you how I feel, but words are not there. Emotion has gotten the best of me and stripped me of more to say. It is snowing and freezing cold outside here in Chicago but in honor of today's historic win, beers are in order with a fire in the backyard tonight with some family visiting. I will enjoy the beers and drink in honor of Fulham Football Club. They have given us an early Christmas present and like the Denver Nuggets Starter jacket my parents gave me at Christmas when I was 12 years old, I will not forget this.

What are your thoughts and feelings about the past few days for Fulham? Are you like me in the sense that you are in shock at what has occurred during the last two matches? I would like to read what you have to say. Share your thoughts and feelings with us all. We are all part of the Fulham family and we are all one for Fulham!!

Well done Fulham!!!!!!

I feel like an idiot for hating on Bobby Zamora before the season started... I was very upset we didn't pick up another real scoring threat... turns out we already had ourselves a true goal scorer. Its been a pleasure watching the boys play this season and excited to see us turn a few more heads in the upcoming matches.

first off im an arsenal fan... so no real bias here, but i was delighted today when i heard about the result and even more so watchin match of the day and seeing utd get spanked... throughly deserved for fulham tho!!! better team by a distance... also earlier in the season the better team when we played you, but for mannone having the game of his life you'd a beaten us by a similar score line... anyway good luck to you's in europe and the rest of the season in the premier league....
p.s. Zamora is in the form of his life at the minute , big player for you;s

Great match to watch. During the last ten minutes (and I mean for the. entire. ten. minutes.) the home supporters were singing a song I didn't recognize. Any idea when it was?

Posted by pwc on 12/20/2009

Never mind. It was the Manchester lads singing their woes.

Great win but lets not get carried away. The team needs to focus on Tottenham and Chelsea, the latter being, in my opinion, a lot better.

im an arsenal fan.so im not biased towards fulham but that was an absolute spanking by fulham on manu.It was such a dominant performance that my manu supporter cousin stopped watching when duff made it 3-0.

Please tell me how I can watch the matches. I listened to the game on Fulhams web site and it sounded great. I have time warner cable and fox soccer but I couldn't find the game on any of the channels I have. I have every channel they offer.
Frustrated Fulham fan in NC

Tom, I immensely enjoyed your passionate submittal. And you're right...it's great to enjoy this period of success. It's why we're fans.

As Fulham fans, we've become so used to looking at the tables every week from bottom up to see how many points we were clear of 18th place. It's so liberating to look at the upper half of the table to see how close we are to clubs like Liverpool, Villa and the like.

Compliments to Roy on how he managed the Europa, by not sitting too many of the regulars. I believe our success there has helped the resiliency in games with the top EPL teams, and will continue to do so as the season progresses. It also strengthened depth of the team so we were able to survive around our injuries.

Well, well, well. Ias ked for 1 or 3 points to make this a great christmas and not only did I ROY give me three points I also got three goals as a new year present.

This year goes to show how confidence grows with success on the field and with stability off the field the players become happy and the fringe players get to enjoy the success of the playering team as well.

Look at Zamora. Twice the player he showed us last yers. ROY believes in him. Bobby gets a goal, he is happy, he scores another, he starts off loading assists to other players and they become happy and the team is on their way.

Why would our players want to leave now with the success we are having. Moving to a bigger club may sound good but he pressure can get to you, especially if you go as a back up player and not get much first team play.

So, for 2010, please be the same as 2009 and let the journey continue.

Again, merry xmas to all you fulham supporters througout the world.

Come on Fulham!! Great Win -- don't forget it was American Dempsey who headed that ball back in for Zamora's goal. Demps is playing well - can't wait to see how Landon Donovan does at Everton. Go USA -- go Fulham

PS sure do miss Bocenegra on the backline.

Go Fulham

Gatorbest, I hope you're being facetious about Bocanegra. I'm glad we're rid of him. We're so much better off. Don't want to see him on the pitch for Fulham or the USA! Roy Hodgson sent him packing, so that should tell you all you need to know about Bocanegra!

Great job.. now we just got to be consistent and not lose stupid games!!

Spurs and chelsea big matches in determining how our season goes.. will we push for top 7 or we will be doomed for a mid table finished..

as an arsenal fan i have always been impressed with fulham..they fight hard against the odds..i have never seen fulham as a bottom of the barrel team but as a mid table/europa cup team(at least last 2 seasons?) as an arsenal fan ure also my bogey team..like france to brazil...we hardly ever win against you! thank you FFC for spanking manu and helping us(arsenal) to keep pace with the the top 2. keep going lads and i hope to see u lift the europa cup this season...youve got it in ya!

Posted by van on 12/21/2009

Fulham are my second team after MUFC. I love watching Fulham (most weeks) and CONSISTENCY is all that is missing from separating Fulham from the big boys.
Losing to Wolves and Birmingham, tieing to the Hammers, Wigan, Bolton and Burnley shows the lack of consistency that could have seen FFC clear of the also rans.
Granted injuries have played a part, but on the up side Bobby Zamorra is in the form of his life, what a turnaround after the transfer rumours at the start of the season...

One week does not a season make, but ....
It is difficult not to be incredibly and unusually optimistic about the future of Fulham F.C. The squad has been strengthened and confidence is oozing from the plyers. What I particularly like is that Dempsey, Duff and Murphy all show the creativity necessary in midfield to create chances. The team is physically stronger than in recent years and far better organised.
I did predict here at the end of last season that Zamora would score more. When he's not playing, it upsets the whole balance of the team.
Despite our tremendous start to the season, we lie 'only' ninth with some extremely wealthy clubs above us. How high can we go?
I am just enjoying being in the top half of the table, without too many expectations for the future.

You forgot to mention our makeshift frontline with Zamora and Gera partnering up for the first time in a while. I think that kind of balances out the fact that Man U were playing with their own makeshift backline.

Roy: EPL games are carried on Setanta as well as Fox Soccer. Time Warner does not carry it. You can sign up for Setanta Broadband (now Setanta-i I think), which has an incredibly sharp feed once you download two necessary programs, or you can watch Setanta in a local bar. Setanta's website lists the bars in your neighborhood.

It's interesting all the Arsenal fans commenting. My son is an Arsenal fan, but says he almost enjoys watching Fulham more. His comment was that Zamora's game Saturday was the best he had ever seen anyone play as a lone striker.

For all the Zamora doubters, of whom I was one, I think the difference this year is not the goal scoring, but the consistency. Zamora had some sparklers last year, but there were as many games where he never showed up. This year he is doing it every week. Heskey really is the poor man's Zamora.

Posted by Craig Boylstein on 12/23/2009

I have Setanta-i and along with fox soccer can watch basically every EPL match. The Setanta feed is fine with no hiccups.
Now Europa league is another matter - but maybe the knock-out rds will be aired.

It has been a pretty solid year so far and knocking off Man. U. is great. But I think a true test is coming this week with the Spurs coming to the Cottage. If Fulham wins that one I think they have something this year and could get as high as maybe 6th.

Posted by Roy on 12/23/2009

Thank you Ben. I catch all of the games on Fox and the Spanish sports channels but it's good to know there is another source for the matches.

Posted by Michael on 12/23/2009

What is exciting is the 5 point gap between 9th and 10th place. Its neat to see the team playing as strong as they are.

Hopefully it can continue, and 3 points from Man U is great, and its now 2 years in a row they've done so at the Cottage. I thought Man U wouldk be gunning for revenge...

Good stuff.
