Fulham

After a week off for international duty, the spotlight of Monday Night Football was on Fulham and Hull City at Craven Cottage. Fortunately for Cottager fans it was Hull City that looked rusty as the Cottagers scored on either side of halftime and cruised to a 2-0 win.

The win moves Fulham up to 12th place in the table, just one point behind Everton and two points behind both Burnley and Stoke City. It is conceivable that the Cottagers could vault into the top ten as they have a game in hand.

Roy Hodgson's side was in control all night long at the Cottage. The Cottagers controlled the midfield and keeper Mark Schwarzer was never really tested throughout the match.

The Whites strong first half looked as though it may go unrewarded until the 43rd minute when oft-criticized forward Bobby Zamora headed home a Damien Duff cross to give Fulham a much deserved 1-0 lead at the break.

The momentum continued into the second half as the Cottagers continued to attack the Hull City goal in waves. The hard work paid off in the 63rd minute when the aforementioned Zamora's cross was tapped in by Diomansy Kamara to make it 2-0.

Fulham looked to add more in the last 30 minutes of the match but nothing ever materialized. It was a good, comfortable win for the Cottagers and one in which they had to have to keep their season going in a positive note.

I have said many times before that I feel this Fulham team is too good to be considered a candidate for relegation. Today's match proved just that as it was clear that the Cottagers were the superior team on the pitch. It was a match in which Fulham was favored to win and proved the pundits were correct in making easy work of Phil Brown's lifeless Tigers.

One side note about the match was the return of former Cottager Jimmy Bullard. The energetic midfielder made his long awaited 2009-2010 debut for Hull after leaving Fulham last January and then subsequently getting injured in his first appearance with the Tigers. It was nice to see Jimmy back in action. He is a good character and a good player that did nothing but positive things when at the club. I wish him nothing but the best throughout the rest of his career. His contributions during the 2007-2008 "Great Escape" season will never be forgotten by me. It's nice to have Jimmy back on the pitch.

With Monday's match in the books, the attention will now be focused on Thursday night when mighty Roma come a calling to Craven Cottage in a key Europa League group contest. Heading into this match, Fulham is leading the group with four points through two matches. Roma and FC Basle are tied in second place on three points, while CSKA Sofia is in last on one point.

A win for Fulham on Thursday over Roma would really put the Cottagers in the drivers seat to advance beyond the group stage. However, that will be a tall order as the Roma will surely be hungry for a win to get back to the top of this competitive group.

It will be interesting to see what kind of a team Roy Hodgson selects for this match. It has become clear that the Premier League is the team's priority and with a comfortable win on Monday against Hull, the Cottagers can feel a little better about Thursday's game knowing that their league position is moving upwards rather than spiraling down. However, one thing to keep in mind is that despite Thursday's match being at Craven Cottage, Fulham will have to make a trip north to take on Manchester City in league play on Sunday.

So, that being said, what kind of a lineup would you like to see in this match? Would you like to see most of the regulars or would you prefer a mix of starters and reserves? Or simply, all reserves to give the regulars time off to prepare for the trip to the City of Manchester Stadium? It is a tough call. I am glad I do not have to make the decision, although if I had, I would likely go with a mix of both starters and reserves as I have been saying since the competition began in late July. I guess we will find out on Thursday. Let me know what you think.

Injuries will more likely decide the team, Italian teams have good technique and break fast on the counter attack. It's good Duff has returned to form, would like to see Kamara play, save Zamora for Sunday and have Nevland come in if Johnson is not fit.. Greening seems to be fitting in well and with Davies on the mend hopefully he will get to play some part in Thursday game

I'd go with the strongest possible team against Roma and try to put a stamp on the group in Europa, then go with the mixed team at Man City. Fulham aren't SUPPOSED to do well on the road, so play full strength at home.

I'd like to see them go for gold. It is not often this team gets to go for a major trophy, so why not make a real effort to do so here?

Sure, priority can be in the PL, but I believe it was Hangeland who said they should not at all apologize for being in Europa. They shouldn't, and they should make the most of this chance.

tonight was a good win, and winning form is good form. lets have a similiar team for Thursday at our home fortress, nad then check players for injury etc after the game. A win at home is a must Thursday, an away draw on Sunday will be like a victory with a team that Man City will put out on the field, and with the extra break.

Two losses will make it hard in the cup and may place us back in the bottom 5 again. So lets keep the winning form going.

I would like too see the squad that was put out again Hull City... mayb an exception or 2... i liked how Chris Baird played... he was more of a defensive midfield... wit that in mind Greening showed he can mesh wit our team... give him a start and let Murphy get some rest and mayb heal from that knock he got against Hull. The Forwards.. i agree wit Peter id like too see Kamara and Nevland play up front if Johnson is hurt... and yes Michaels right... Hangeland did say we shouldnt use Europa as an excuse... RH take his advice... field a squad of MAINLY starters... and a couple reserves... and in the 2nd half mayb add some more reserves too the match and give the other hard working mids a rest if they can... aka Dempsey and Duff... they r going too be tired down the stretch of the season and need too try and get time to rest when they can... Duff has too help ROI qualify for WC 2010 and Dempsey play a big part in USA qualifying for 2010 and he will will play a part in the friendly comn up

The fans have spoken, we agree with Hangeland...we want success in the Europa, we want the chance to say 'we beat Roma', we want the pride. Not to mention, doesn't a good performance in the Europa help in attracting more world class players to the Cottage for the future? This is much more than a feel-good venture.

I agree with the posts...to field a strong lineup for the home fixture. To field the same lineup that performed Monday is an interesting concept, these players just got a nice win together and will still be 'feeling' it only 3 days later. However, I would give Riise the nod to start and have Dempsey come off the bench for the final 30 where he can be fresh, aggressive and angry. Riise has pedigree and a chip on his shoulder and might respond well with the Italian foe. I'd also get Greening into the starting mix. His grit is needed here. If Johnson is fit, he needs to be in this game in place of Kamara. Also, I think the defense needs to remain intact.
