Fulham

Fulham are in 7th place my fellow Cottager supporters. The Whites have four matches to play and they control their own destiny in terms of playing European football next season. The Cottagers reached 7th position in the table on Saturday when they defeated Stoke City 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

As has been the case all season long it was a team effort in grinding out Saturday's victorious result. Erik Nevland, who came off the bench to replace Bobby Zamora midway through the first half, made his presence felt right away scoring the only goal of the match for the Cottagers.

While Nevland has not started many league matches this campaign he has been a regular on Roy Hodgson's bench and has made many positive contributions to the team this season. He has not complained one time about his lack of starts and has been a professional all season long. He is to be commended for this and he is one of the many reasons Fulham are in the position it is in right now.

Many who read this blog have sent me emails or commented about Fulham's amazing turnaround from just one year ago completing a great escape from the drop to now possibly playing in Europe next season. The main reason is Roy Hodgson. He has bought well in the transfer market and has gotten the most out of his players throughout his time in charge at Fulham.

In years past, Fulham has been a tough team to watch. They struggled to string passes together and shipped way too many goals which lead to them fighting relegation the last few seasons come April and May. Under Hodgson though things are different. He has shored up the defense and implemented a passing style of football that is pleasing on the eye not just for Fulham supporters but for neutral fans as well.

The Cottagers have one of the top five defensive records in the league and additionally, they are a top five team when it comes to passing completion percentage. Compare those stats with Fulham teams under Chris Coleman and Lawrie Sanchez and it is night and day. Fulham can defend and they can pass the ball down the pitch and in turn they have been very successful.

It sounds simple to say this is what needed to be done to the club, but Hodgson has been able to take this team and do just that. He has played a consistent starting eleven in which each player knows his role and has also brought players off the bench like Zoltan Gera and the aforementioned Erik Nevland to contribute to the team. I cannot stress enough what a great job he has done.

While Sir Alex Ferguson may win all the year-end manager of the year awards this season Roy Hodgson should get some serious consideration for the tremendous job he has done with the Cottagers. If I was voting he would get my vote as Manager of the Year in the Premier League.

Lastly, I want to point out the fact that the relegation battle is absolutely fascinating. It is nice to be able to watch things unfold at the bottom of the table without worrying about Fulham down there. It has been a few years since this happened and I kind of forgot what relegation was like without a team I support in the mix. But with the likes of Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, West Brom, Hull and others still fighting it out for the right to stay in the Premier League it is a joy to watch. For Fulham's sake I hope a relegation fight is not in the cards any year soon. It is tough on the ticker.

It's great to see Fulham's progress under Hodgson's guidance. Thumbs up to him and his players. It'll be nice to see them play in the Europa League next season. If they do, I wish them all the best!!

Btw, i m an Arsenal fan :P

Way to go Cottagers! It's been a joy to watch them all year and I hope we can string together enough results to finish 7th. Hodgson deserves all the credit for this change in course, and it truly paid dividends.

Hailing from Oregon, I would have never expected this kind of result at the beginning of the campaign. Continue on boys!

It's so nice to be a couple of games out from the end of the season and not have to worry about the relegation battle.
The last couple years (especially last year) have been nerve tensing and it's really good to see the boys challenging for Europe instead of just trying to stay in the league.
Roy has done a fantastic job of building a team and instilling his philosophy.
Here's to hoping we've got many more years of this kind of football to come!
COYW!!!

I agree that Hodgson's presence has been fantastic. Focusing on solid players and a solid system he has really changed the team. I hope he'll be at the Cottage for some time...

I also have a quick question: is the team better without Bullard? I think it might be. While he brought energy, I think the team now is settling in and actually plays the style Roy has instilled better than before.

Thoughts?

Great season for the cottagers. Fully deserve to be in Europe. If they are maybe more funds will be available to strengthen their squad. Finishing the season above the highest points total of 52 would be a huge achievement. Lets all hope its achieved. Congrats to Roy Hodgson and Fulham Football Club for another great season.

Just want to say congratulations to Fulham for the great season! Yes, Hodgson made the difference, but i just want to say how well Brede Hangelaand and Mark Schwartzer have done! Btw, I'm a Man Utd fan.

To be honest, I have my doubts on Hodgson when he took over Fulham. He proved me wrong over and over again. Great Job!!!

C'mon you White's!!! It has been a great ride this season & Roy has the lads running on all cylinders! No nail biting this season, that's for sure. Europe, here we come! The remaining schedule looks to be a tall order, but 7 points from 4 matches is realistic. The defence needs to stand tall, while Andy & Clint need to finish their opportunities. Keep rocking "the Cottage" and before you know it, European football will be a reality! "Oh when the Whites go marching in!"

I'm an Arsenal fan, but I've always have a soft spot for Fulham since the Keegan - Tigana days. Thumbs up for the great season you guys are having!

My brother and I, both Chelsea fans, were sitting outside Starbucks in Vienna one day last June during EURO2008 when Roy Hodgson walked by. We called out to him and he took the time to stop and chat to us for a few minutes about EURO2008 and about Fulham. He seemed like a great bloke. His work at Fulham shows clearly that he is one of top 2-3 English coaches working in football at the moment. It is actually incredible that he has never had a job at one of the really big clubs. Good luck to Roy and to Fulham. It is great that our bit of West London has two successful premiership clubs.

Manager of the year? mmmm...hahahaha..I think David Moyes of Everton is more deserving...but i guess you looking from fulham glasses...7th is good...but manager of the year..come on..! Still, great job this year!

No matter what happens in the last four matchs, it's been a great season for Fulham. I was concerned when they lost Jimmy Billard (why he went to Hull is anyones guess), but they worked together as unit which is what teams like Newcastle have not been doing. Also, Danny Murphy was been great all season long.

never coach one of the big clubs? he was coach of Inter Milan not too long ago.........

As you know Fulham has quite a cult following here in the States...this year has been amazing...London has to be the sports capital of the world-5 of the top 10 EPL clubs are London based! And look out! The Lions are on the prowl...Millwall coming up? They can take Charlton's place...too bad about the Addicks, but let's hear it for the Cottagers and my man Clint Dempsey!

Posted by CK on 04/28/2009

They defeated ManU and Arsenal at the Cottage, held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw...

Schwarzer, Murphy, Dempsey, Davies, Hangeland, Hughes and of course, Hodgson.. they all did well, didn't they?

they definitely deserve European football next season..

Posted by ck on 04/29/2009

never understand why the inter owner hold him in such high regard....

now i do..

Newcastle need someone like him. Not Alan shearer

2 thumbs up for u guys..I'm a MU fans and seeing how composed and discpline u guys played, i totally believed u deserve Europe next season. In fact i didn't even complains when Utd were beaten by Fulham because you guys work hard and deserve it.

Ps: i do think Fulham need new signings to compete in Europa league(or else will end up playing a weakened side in Europe just for the sake of BPL)

Hodson has definitely turned things around for us.Europe sounds so sweet.Beating Chelsea would be a nice bonus.Hailing from Arkansas, I was skeptical about this year and our roster but its all good.Come on Fulham, lets finish out the season with a bang!!!

An unbelievable season. Roy's been fantatic, just think what would be if the boy's didn't blow a couple of the games late this year. We would already be in Europe! COYW lets get some points from these challenges ahead!

I agree with all the praise being heaped on Roy Hodgson. Outside the performances of the team, his own performances in press conferences is shear class. I have supported this frustrating, glorious club for 53 years and apart form the Tigana era in the old Division 1, never have I been so proud to be a supporter of FFC. We all know there is no prescription for how football should be played but what RH has done is bring this superb passing game to us, coupled with discipline and organisation. And don't let us forget the backroom staff, who have kept the team free form serious injury, with proper training and medical care. RH brought these people to The Club as well as the players he signed.
I only wish Brian McBride had stayed for another year - I genuinely believe we would have had more points than the 44 we have, as Brian would undoubtedly have scored on ocassions when Zamora has missed relatively simple chances.
The big test is next season can RH take us further?

Can someone please tell me when Fulham were last at this level ( 7th or 8th I think)in the Premier League or it's First Division predecessor at this late stage in the season ?. I've been a Fulham fan for over 50 years and can't recall this degree of acheivement before.

Roy Hodgson for Time Person of the Year.

It truly has been a wonderful season for Fulham. Here's hoping they can close it out with a win at Newcastle and another at home to Everton.

Wins over Man Utd and Arsenal are obvious highlights.

On the other hand, Fulham could be sitting pretty for Europe but for the back-to-back home losses to Hull and Blackburn in March and the heartbreaking last-second loss to Liverpool in April. Only taking 11 points from 9 matches against the current bottom 5 sides (with one left against Newcastle) could also come back to haunt. Let's hope not, and that a place in Europe will be Fulham's!
