Don't let Saturday's 1-0 loss to Blackburn get you down my fellow Fulham supporters. After four matches we have six points and sit 11th in the Premier League table. Losses to Hull and the aforementioned Blackburn are ones that the Cottagers perhaps should have won, but instead of focusing on the bad, we should be focusing on the many positives we have seen in the first four matches of Fulham's campaign.
Last season it took Fulham seven matches to amass six points. This season it took only three. If that is not a clear enough indicator that things are going to be different at Fulham this season there are many other pieces of evidence to give supporters belief that last season's near escape from relegation is a thing of the past.
First and foremost, Fulham has a manager in Roy Hodgson who has instilled the confidence, belief and on-field tactics that give the Cottagers a great chance to win week in and week out.
Unlike his predecessor Lawrie Sanchez who employed a hoof it over the top and pray for good fortunes, Hodgson has this year's team playing some attractive one-touch football where the ball moves fluently from the back of the defense up to the strikers in attack up front.
While Fulham has not perfected this style of play, the Cottagers have shown against both Arsenal and Bolton that when on their game, they are a very tough team to beat.
Fulham finally has a professional manager that has the experience and knowledge of the game on and off the field that will allow Fulham to be on par or above other Premier League teams before the match starts. In years past it seemed like Fulham not only did not have the horses on the field, but they were also being outclassed and outcoached by the opposing manager. With Roy Hodgson at the helm, that has not been the case at all. In fact, Roy Hodgson might be one of the best managers in all of the Premier League.
In addition to Hodgson's strong managerial skills, Fulham fans should be ecstatic about the role new summer signings Bobby Zamora, Andy Johnson and Zoltan Gera have been playing in bolstering Fulham's attack this season. Both Zamora and Gera have opened up their scoring accounts while Andy Johnson has proven to link up well with Zamora and the rest of the Fulham team.
While Johnson has not scored yet, he has shown some positive signs in his two appearances for the Whites. He looks to be healthy and he looks to be fitting in well with the rest of the team and that will ultimately be a huge factor in determining whether or not Johnson makes the kind of impact Fulham expected he would when he signed from Everton for 10.5 million pounds over the summer.
Fulham is playing some fairly good football right now. Saturday's match against Blackburn was not the best example of the new look Fulham. However, it was not the worst performance in the world. Blackburn was desperate for a win and they got one. Fulham needed to roll up their sleeves and play with the same kind of aggression and physical style of play as their opponents but that was not to be. Hopefully the Cottagers will learn from a match like this and not let a team outmuscle them the rest of the season.
With the first four matches in the books, it is time to look ahead and see what is on the horizon over the next few weeks. Quite honestly, it will be an important couple of weeks as the month of October features four winnable matches against West Brom, Sunderland, Portsmouth and Wigan.
That is not say that any of those four are sure bets to win, but the Fulham team we have seen play this year is one that could pick up a few wins during the month and really build the positive momentum for the club both on and off the pitch.
It is important that Fulham plays well in October as November will not be as easy with matches against Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool and Aston Villa.
It is an exciting time to be a Fulham fan during this period of change. Fulham is a team on the move and in a positive transition. With a great manager and some solid players, it could be a very memorable season for Cottager fans everywhere. The night is still young, but the way this team has been set up by Roy Hodgson I expect the party to last deep into the night and maybe even surprise a few people along the way.
