After the win over Wigan and with new players finally onboard, the feel good factor looked like returning to Everton and there was optimism that our season could finally get going. That feel good factor evaportated though after another poor display and a defeat at Fulham which also saw us lose captain Phil Neville for what looks like most of the season.
There were few positives to take from this. Fulham are a team we should beat if we're serious about finishing in the top 6, but despite taking the lead, Everton never looked in control and will have to do better if we're to start climbing the table.
Aside from Cahill's headed goal, we offered little or no threat going forward. And Jo just isn't good enough leading the line on his own. He is too weak, pushed off the ball too easily and I'm afraid the likes of Marcus Bent and Victor Anichebe have offered us much more playing upfront alone in the past. The only role I can see for Jo is at home when he has a strike partner, or as a sub who might be able to change a game with his trickery. I'd much sooner see James Vaughan get a run out, who'll run through brick walls for the cause given half a chance.
The midfield was also poor. Moyes has at least decided that Fellaini and Cahill can't really operate in the same team and he dropped the Belgian and played Cahill as a second striker, which has worked wonders for us in the past. But it begs questions of how our midfield will fit together long term and who are starting 4 or 5 should be. A lot of that depends on what the Russian is like but I think he'll be introduced to the team quite slowly to start with.
And we all know how Moyes likes to play with a defensive midfielder - who will that be now that Neville's injured? Heitinga? He'll also need time to adapt to that position based on Sunday's evidence.
Just before the transfer deadline, the manager said too many people need a good kick up the arse and need to fight for their places and perhaps be dropped in a bid to regain their form. So far, Fellaini seems to be taking the brunt of that criticism, unfairly in my opinion. He was excellent against Wigan and changed the game for us so perhaps he should have started against Fulham.
It is the likes of Jo, Baines, Osman and Cahill who need to up their game and rediscover the form of last season.
Something that offers optimism though is the fact that we've been here before. We always start slowly, the squad is certainly full of good players and the prospect of welcoming the likes Yakubu, Arteta and Jagielka back to the team bodes very well for us. But those players will take time to come back and get back up to speed. Until then, the current crop need to take a good look at themselves and start playing with more urgency, determination and strength - we were bullied out of the game by Fulham on Sunday and that's unacceptable for an Everton team.
Next up is a tough test against AEK Athens - without a right back. Dan Gosling will probably get a run out there but however Moyes reshapes the team, there need to be improvements from those who start.
