Everton made light work of a potentially tricky fixture, brushing Wigan Athletic aside with probably their most straightforward victory of the season. Goals from Fellaini, Osman and a brace from Jo were enough to seal the points against the lacklustre Lactics.
It was important to get back on track after slipping up against Portsmouth last time out and the Blues didn't disappoint. We were also poor in the away fixture at Wigan and Moyes was keen to make sure we atoned for that display and put some more distance between ourselves and a team that are also chasing a Europa Cup place.
So it was good to welcome back the likes of Cahill and Hibbert to the starting line-up so that we had at least something resembling a first choice starting 11 - in the current set-up at least. In truth though, we were playing without pressure and that showed. There's plenty of distance between us and the chasing pack and we're looking at the teams above us rather than those below us.
This victory puts us within a point of Villa and sets up next week's encounter at Villa Park quite nicely.
Saha was sensibly rested as Moyes sought to protect him and keep him fresh for the semi-final with Man U, so Jo and Fellaini started upfront forming probably the most gangly and big haired attack in world football. Of course, there's more to both of them than their height and hair and both shone on a sunny afternoon at Goodison.
Jo opened the scoring after a great slide rule pass from Osman put him in on the left edge of the box. The on-loan Brazilian's first touch set him up perfectly and he rifled a low shot into the corner past Chris Kirkland.
Everton were comfortable but had to wait until the second half to add to their tally. The returning Tony Hibbert - who never looks like he's been away whenever he returns from injury - whipped in a low cross and Fellaini spun and turned home a low shot into the Park End goal. Everton were coasting and very quickly added a third, this time Jo tapped in when Kirkland could only parry another effort from Fellaini, who was causing allsorts of problems to Wigan.
The obvious criticism of Jo is one I've come out with a few times myself. "He only plays well and scores against inferior opposition at home". Which is true, at least on the evidence so far. But you could also class every other team outside the top 4 as inferior opposition and seeing as we play half of our games at home, he could well end up getting 20 goals a season here if we signed him. That all depends on how much we'd have to pay and how Moyes wants to set the team up when Yakubu is back. But for now he's been a more than useful signing.
Leon Osman had been at the heart of all of Everton's good play and enjoyed his best game of the season so far. Having had a hand in all three goals so far, he slotted home the fourth after yet another effort from Fellaini, and yet another spill from Kirkland. No more than he deserved and game well and truly over.
Two huge games now await the blues as we can go above Villa next weekend with what would be a fantastic win at Villa Park if we can pull it off. The danger of course is that we'll have one eye on a trip to Wembley a week later and we need to try and make sure players like Cahill and Saha come through unscathed to stand half a chance of beating United.
It's great to be in such a position though and Everton have a lot to play for going into the last few weeks of the season. Namely 5th spot but more significantly that long awaited piece of silverware that Moyes and the players crave to cap the revival and excellent work of the last few years.

It would be great to see us make the final of the FA Cup, but I'm still extremely proud to be an Evertonian with the way we've played this year, with so many injuries
Go the Toffees

It's great to see Everton doing so well. Just rewards for sticking with a manager thru thick and thin, and for keeping a squad together instead of tearing it apart and putting it together (unlike some club in London). A pity that they are meeting Man Utd in the semis and not the final. They could tear Man Utd apart right now. - Man Utd fan

Although a Reds fan, I'm always pleased when Everton does well - against anyone except us that is.
A question - Is Saha eligible to play against United next week?
The article implies that he is but I cannot find info on whether he was bought or if he is on loan from United.
Either way, best of luck at Wembley.

"...the most gangly and big haired attack in world football." Excellent! Nice one Tony, keep it up. Up the Blues.

It has been a joy to be an Everton Supporter this season and watching us blow through Wigan was just a joy. While a win at Wembley would be the ultimate thrill, a win at Villa Park would make my Blue heart smile too...its a grand ole team to support!
